  • Ever heard a recording of yourself and hated the way you sound? It's a common thing, and has to do with sound vibration...or the lack thereof. Trace describes what we actually sound like when we speak, plus why we may be drawn to the sounds of others.

      I'm not joking, but when I hear my voice the way others do it sounds like a baby combined with someone vomiting and a 4 year old man child screaming as if he saw everything that he is afraid of at once. Record my voice and put it in High Infrasound to make the worlds ears fall into anarchy.

    You answered the question about why there is a difference between the voice we hear in our head when we speak and the recording of our voice. But you did not explain why humans typically have a negative reaction to this difference. The voice sound waves passing through bone cause our inner voice to sound deeper. Why do we prefer the deeper version of our voice?

    • @sidimightbe
      @sidimightbe 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be obvious, deeper=stronger individual

    • @gswcooper7162
      @gswcooper7162 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That part's easy to answer - we like the version of our voice that we usually hear because it's the version that we usually hear. :)
      It's exactly the same reason why we're more comfortable looking at our reflection than a photograph of ourself - because we're more used to seeing our reflected image in a mirror. (Although with the rise in popularity of unflipped cameraphone images and being able to record ourselves anywhere anytime, this may not remain true for future generations).

    • @Qwerty-hy5mj

      I know I'm late but there is a TED talk about this. It was I while since I saw it and I didn't understand everything so I might be wrong. Basically the recording is close enough to what we hear in our head that we immediately recognize it as our own but it's different enough that it feels really awkward to hear.

  • @TheAmberThief

    Wait- so my voice sounds normal to other people?
    What exactly do they hear? This odd sound that we hear...that's the one that everyone hears?
    Why wouldn't one of the voices coming out of our ears sound odd? I mean, it goes through the ear the same way as those that come out of a recording machine, right?

    • @TheAmberThief
      @TheAmberThief 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I recorded my voice recently and was shocked to find that I could tolerate it now, which made no sense. During the video I remembered my call center work. They always gave you a little feedback of your own voice in the headset and after a little while I developed my "telephone voice" which sounds closer to what's in my head and I un-consciously ended up using when making the recording.

    Dublin, it reminds me of my family. Y'know, 'Feck off, ya conts' and the like? Yup. What a classic
    When you guys say 'British', do you mean that middle class posh, classy London/Oxford accent? Because Britain is made up of several countries, and in Southern East England ALONE it varies from 'Are you quite alright?' to 'Y'oll rah mae?', let alone the rest of England or the rest of Britain.

    I learned that my voice sounds extremely different when I was working at a nursing home and my phone in my pocket accidentally started recording. I listened back to it and was amazed at how much I sounded like my cousin! It was actually pretty cool because I love the sound of her voice. I'm also a singer, so I'm unaccustomed to hearing my voice by itself vs with a choir...but as to your question: My favorite accent is the British accent and I love it because it feels sophisticated.

      +Matt Leach Indeed there are loads of different English accents, at least 3 Scottish accents, at least 3 Welsh accents, and at least 2 Northern Irish accents. People referring to the 'British Accent' are probably thinking of one particular English accent that isn't particularly common.

    Almost every single other video on the subject says it'll explain why, but then only tells why our voices sound different than what we normally hear, which makes them very misleading.

    I think my favourite accent is an American accent from New Jersey. It just sounds so comical and ridiculous, added to the fact that Americans speak a strange version of English, makes it just generally funny to me.

    • @fLiP14344
      @fLiP14344 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to let you know, nearly everyone in New Jersey does not have a "Jersey accent". If you're referring to the accents you hear on that show "Jersey Shore", I think you should know that they aren't even from Jersey; they're from New York. Their accents are close to a Brooklyn accent. There's also the Boston accent. I can assure you that the "Jersey accent" is nonexistent in New Jersey. Exchange students from California stayed for months and they were surprised that we sounded just like them. I just thought you should know that your favorite accent is probably the Boston or New York accent. That ridiculous show is degrading, and gives a bad rep to New Jersey.

    • @ajzebadua
      @ajzebadua 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cast from Jersey Shore are Italian-Americans and I know that's not the actual Jersey accent. It's not the Boston-Irishy accent that I've heard while in New England, but probably more like Brooklyn. I'm not American (obviously) but I just find it genuinely humourous. American accents in general are funny to me because of the way their English developed and the way they sound. I'm sure to Americans the rest of the allophonic world sounds funny as well.
      And for the record, I think that show was pointless and for me at least, not very entertaining. The theme song was quite catchy though.

    • @fLiP14344
      @fLiP14344 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't blame you. Everyone thinks American accents are funny. Just wanted to make sure that you didn't think all people in Jersey talked like that! According to my friends from Cali, we have such valley girl accents.

    • @ajzebadua
      @ajzebadua 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course I don't believe all people from Jersey speak like that! That's like saying all Englishfellows sound like Londoners (sod off anyone that's going to start the London fight), or all Canadians have Francophone accents.
      Californians sound a little bland to be honest, I don't fully understand where the "valley girl" thing comes from. People from Canada's west coast are sometimes held akin to "valley accents" but I don't believe they sound anything like Californians.
