Jigglypuff also can’t recover. She’s programmed to use to up-special like every other character except Luigi, and Sing is useless as a recovery. Makes me wonder if Melee’s rushed development led to the wrong character prioritizing side-special over up-special.
I wonder if there's a way to see how a Luigi with Jiggs AI plays and vice versa. Would be interesting!

You think Melee AI is bad? Wait until you see Level 9 Luigi and Ganon.
Dont forget the infinite A combo of Fox, Falco and Dr.Mario on the Level 9 CPU.
Ganon ai sucks, if you jump near him he uses up b every time, so if you jump from ledge while he is in front of you he dies every time
Level 9 Zelda as she spams the down A was a nightmare for me.

It would be interesting if someone develops an actually good AI (not 20xx) that adapts to your playing and punishes your weakness.
Another cool thing would be an AI that learns from specific players and play like them, so we can play a version of Mango or Zain or something like that

One of my favorite moments in melee history is when youtuber DougDoug put his twitch chat to beat the giant Yoshi in one of the challenges and they won because Yoshi just dropped off the stage as soon as the level started

This is what happens when you have to develop the entire game in 13 months. To the dev team's credit, it was good enough to keep me entertained as a kid and make unlocking characters at least mildly interesting, and let's be honest: nobody plays Smash for the single-player anyway. Sometimes you have to make compromises on game development, and I'm this case, the broken AI was good enough to ship.

As a kid, my record time for the giant Yoshi Event Match, Dino Wrangling, was 0.00. This was because as soon as the match started, giant Yoshi immediately fell off into the blast zone.

i’ve ran into many bugs fighting ai’s in ultimate too, think ai’s pacing back and forth under a platform or just spamming the same move over and over whilst out of range

@@JeffTheBagel EVERY game uses AI for computer characters. Everybody knows that. SOME people associate that with Generative AI, which is bad. This is a satiric jab at those people

I like how high level cpus will block projectiles regardless of where they are so if they're off the stage just shoot something at them and they just guard and fall. it works really well with fox.
There’s a reason “Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing” was a thing lol (even though I THINK that started in Mario Party?)
I remember as a kid I wanted to unlock stuff for playing hundreds of vs matches so what I did was go to Jungle Japes, set the CPU to Ness level 9 and I think I would play as Yoshi, start a match with 1 stock and stand still. If you did that every time Ness would immediately jump into the water and die (he would do this on any CPU level but below 8 he would walk of the edge while at 8 or 9 he would double jump straight off and it saved a few seconds. I'd play on my GBA while he did this over and over
Yeah, I did a one of the challenges against Yoshi as Luigi and Yoshi just walked off the stage before I moved.
I remember once, when I was a kid, I was on Mushroom Kingdom. I think I was on one of the ledges of the right pit, or otherwise in that general area, and the CPU was on a brick platform off to the right of me, and it just started turning in place until I moved elsewhere.
That Melee Luigi AI recovers better than the Ultimate Mac AI. That last one is just attrocious and doesn't even use Side-B at all (Mac's Side-B is comparable to ZZS's Down-B)
The AI will always be my favorite thing in melee. Fun fact if you stand close to the spinning tiles on Yoshi island (SMW). Bowser will always bowser suicide bomb Everytime or N-air self-destruct.
i remember figuring out really early on in smash 4 that peach lvl9 cpus try to edgeguard with float, but just... float, leaving them wide open to spikes

for brawl, if the cpu cannot detect an opponent, they will stand still and repeatedly taunt
I’m just gonna say this: FD, Fox or Falco just spam laser and they don’t even make the effort to avoid it and you just run to the other side and continue to do so.

When I'm playing Melee (Btw I main Mario), and when I'm against a Luigi, never have I felt a computer being smart, but also being dumb like Luigi has. It can beat me up a bit on stage but offstage... It's so sad.
The Bowser thing still happens to CPUs in Ultimate lol. Lvl 9 ones.

I've seen that Ness clip used as an exploit to win a match as every starter character and unlock another character. (Wasn't it Marth?) Heck, that's how I've done it in recent years.

My favorite one is if you play against fox on hyrule temple when hes cpu lvl i believe 8, he will continuously recover/walk around at the bottom of the map if hes the only one there
Dude without my memory card id have to try to speed run as many of the chars for the boys as I could marth was so easy because of level 9 ness killing himself off rip in japes consistently

Talking about AI but showcasing a game made 20 years ago
the term "ai" has almost nothing to do with machine learning, it's just been generalized and ruined in the public eye
super smash bros. cpu players are an artificial form of intelligence, but only in the sense that they're pre-packed with a bunch of moves and are automatic characters who can use their moves to get a rough guess that could let them win.
don't associate the term the generative crap, as it can literally be any form of artificial thought or processing

The Luigi CPU will only use side b to recover. I think they did this because the AI probably would try to use up b off the cut and just die then.

Once per stock on FD you can jump over lvl 9 cpus to make them taunt for some reason😭😭

Considering this game was rushed; I'm glad this is the part of the game they focused less on improving.
I would do a challenge of me vs 3 lvl 9 Luigi’s with 99 stocks on the Mario bros 2 map I would stand on the right side of the map and after they died once they kept falling in the gap between the center and right platforms so yeah cpus are really bad in melee
It made getting MewTwo very easy.
And I thought the level 4 cpus in Ultimate were mindless!
