Part of the reason Greg Murphy's lap was called lap of the gods and has been so revered is because at the time there was very little between competitors in quite an even competition, yet he took over a second (1.09 seconds to be exact) off the previous record.
The lap of the gods record stood for 7 years, a testament to just how good it really was.

The thing that made Greg Murphy's lap in 2003 special was the dominance he had over the field. In the shootout, positions 2 to 10 were spread by about 1 second, which just shows how close the cars were. Murphy's lap was another 1 second faster than 2nd place. That's why all of the other teams in pit lane came out to applaud him, he had just done what was considered impossible. Not trying to take anything away from the laps of McLaughlin or waters, they were also great laps, just explaining what made Murhpy's lap unforgettable.

What everyone seems to overlook about that is that the reason Whincup was so low on fuel was because Paul Dumbrell beached the car at the chase, and they had worked their way back up to 3rd or 4th or something, from around 23rd. I think the plan was to short shift till the end to try and pick up a podium place, but a few cars got taken out in front of him and suddenly he was in the box seat for a win. The team never failed him at all, he still finished 5th. Had they pitted him earlier he wouldn't have been in the top 10

The cars are setup differently for the shoot-out compared to the actual race. Basically to go faster in the shoot-out. I've had a drive on the track (as it's a public road) even at 60k's it is an incredibly tight track with a tonne of blind corners. It's a real credit to the blokes on the field 💪

Not as good as the old days when cars resembled what you could buy from a dealer - standard blocks, gearbox, diff and brakes. Yes, blue printed and upgrade clutch and brake pads but the essence of the car was available to the general public.
Seeing Brick, Moffat, Bond, Grice and Johnson punt them around Bathurst was far better. I believe at the end of Group C they were doing 2:12. So, in 49 years we’ve cut 9 seconds off using cars with race based motors, race brakes, big wings, special suspension, sequential gearboxes and special bodies.

I'm sure someone has already told you in the comments section. That whine you hear are the 'straight cuts gears' of the gearbox. Most road cars have 'helical cut gears' which makes them quieter, but no where near as strong as straight cut gears. The SC gears lose full contact when you back the throttle off.
