  • 1979 was the last year of HDT and was their greatest victory ever.
    This video shows all the highlights of the time Brocky won by 6 laps and set the lap record on the last lap of the race.
    King Brock at his absolute best.

    "1979 was the last year of HDT" isn't right.
    In 1969, Holden formed the HDT through an elaborate, arm’s length ownership structure to keep within GM’s global “no motorsport” rules.
    They appointed Harry Firth to run it, and upon his retirement, John Sheppard took over.
    1979 was the last year that HDT had Holden backing, as Holden pulled the pin on funding as Ford had done the same.
    Beyond 1979, the team was sold off to Vin Kean (the South Australian Holden dealer), who rallied together a bunch of Holden dealers to help fund the race team with support from Marlboro and later Mobil, which also resulted in the HDT road cars, which were backed by Holden and sold through the dealers which helped finance the team.
    The 1980s were arguably HDTs best years, they won Bathurst 5 times (from 8-10 attempts), Sandown twice, the ATCC once (with multiple placings), won odd ball events (Pukekohe 500) and several rounds of the European Touring Car series.
    So perhaps 1979 was the last year HDT was owned by Holden but certainly not the last year of HDT.

      Good get mate!
      Kean had a workshop somewhere down near Goodwood (forget the name of the suburb).
      My uncle had been a welder at Woodville & was seconded to fab gear up at the workshop from time to time
      My old man was at Elizabeth in Research & Development in the mid 60s, first brand new bus we ever had was an EH wagon, that was fond of rusting!

    If you are going to go down that road, Then in 1972 Peter Brock drove the race car from Melbourne to Bathurst and then drove the full 500 miles of the race to win outright, in a single driver effort. For his first Bathurst victory

    • @BorkenGarage
      @BorkenGarage  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    • @BorkenGarage
      @BorkenGarage  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I think the way he won was great from a team perspective too. It wasn't just raw pace, it was the ability to maintain that pace for longer than everyone else. There were other teams who could go quick too but their cars couldn't take it. Lap record on the last lap showed the ultimate superiority of the driver AND the team.

      Ya hit the nail on the head right there. Back in 1986 I bought a tangerine XU-1 for $3500. It was stock as a rock except a set of 9x13 inch Torana rims on the back with 235x50 TAs and 8x13s with 235x50son the front. That thing stuck to the road like super glue. It was a pig to drive at any speed under 50 mph, it would dance from side to side but still stay in a perfectly straight line. Get over 50 and it would stop dancing and get down to business. The faster ya went, the better it handled. I was the third owner, the previous owner said he bought it at a police auction. It only had 24000 kays on the clock and was straight as an arrow. Looked new even though it was 13 years old. That little 202 with its set of triple Strombergs would rev cleanly all the way to 7500 rpms and e as smooth as silk. I worked out with the 2,73 diff in her, she was doing a tad under 150 mph. That was down hill, she couldnt do that on the flat. Last year a bloke from the Eastern States got hold of me on messenger and was asking what the vin and body numbers were so i went n found them . Id taken them off for safety’s reasons. He told me to have a loook on the back of the vin plate and see kf there was any numbers scratched on it. It hadnt been cleaned since it was put on the car so i cleaned the gunk off the back of it and sure enough there were a couple of numbers scratched into the aluminium plate. He said congratulations, your the owner of a 73 Bathurst XU-1. 1 of 250 ever made. I always thought, and fead the only 150 were made. That is wrong. Its 250. Over 250 engines were made to the Bathurst species and a lot of them were unstamped. No engine numbers. That was for racing reasons, if they blew a motor during qualifying they could wack in another motor with the same numbers stamped on as the blown one. She is 50 years old this year and iv owned her for 37 of them. She is one car I will never sell. Her value jumped a lot when I found out she was a Genuine Bathurst model born on .15/8/73..😁

      In this race there were other cars that kept up for a time but had mechanical issues because they had to push so hard to keep up. It wasn't like V8 Supercars, teams could do lots of things within the rules to gain an edge.
      The A9X was far better than the Fords, and the closest competition was other A9X's but they had mechanical failures and the HDT car didn't.
      There were also no safety cars so when there was a crash, they just kept driving, no bunching up the field.
      I think you have got mixed up about Brock being disqualified. He won in a Commodore in 1987 because the European Sierras were using the wrong fuel and wheel arches. He finished 3rd and was later awarded his 9th win. To my knowledge, Brock was ever disqualified from Bathurst.

    OK then since there were holden lovers that wanted to step out of line and Attack me and my favourite brand read these words : FORD is alive holden is dead, and the australian v8 supercars is bias against Ford always has been , its set up to beat up on Ford, thats why there was always way less Ford's on the grid than holden like10 vs 22 and Fords championship teams get bought by holden, Vodafone Ford 888 became vodafone holden wich became red bull racing 888 yet courtney beat them won the championship so holden bought him but Winterbottom beat both of them and holden eventually bought him too, and as it is now theres no parity, wich was clearly discussed before the season began, v8 supercars had shares in holden and now they have shares in Camaro hence why its got a huge advantage over the mustang on purpose, the chassis is aluminium the Mustang chassis is steal the chevy engine is a bigger displacement, the aero package on the mustang eats up the rear tyres the camaro aero package looks after the rear tyres, they slowed the gen 2 Mustang down with 14 changes to it till holdens could beat it, now that the Camaro is beating the mustang with big parity issues they are not slowing the camaro down by making changes they are pretending to improve parity but the changes are no where near enough, out of 25 races Mustang has won only 1 race , All of the mustangs haven't got a chance of winning and no one in v8supercars is allowed to talk about it because they say itll bring the sport into disrepute,????? its already in disrepute because its extremely bias it's more than bias its an all out attack on Ford by GM and v8 supercars, Ford is selling Mustangs v8supecars cant make the Mustang look bad by making a race series that has no parity , idiots will think the camaro is far better than the mustang, now is that a fair competition???? nope, put the latest Ford GT in the v8 supercars Camaro wouldn't win a single race the Ford GT will be doing 360kph on conrod strait, top speed with a Ford GT is 318mph, its just pathetic to be attacked by some moron holden fans, look here holden is D E A D, good riddance
