I've been waiting for a new list video for a while, the last one I couldn't bring myself to watch, as I am terrified of giant spiders. Ellen, I don't know how you got through TWO ENTIRE videos where you listed the most terrifying giant spiders in gaming. The first time I realized I was an Arachnophobe was when I took some prescription meds that made me hallucinate swarms of spiders and tarantulas crawling up my body and eating me from the inside. Not a good experience for a 6 year old to have
When my dad played Dead Space, he was investigating a bedroom with a mutilated corpse on the bed. Then the alarm clock on the nightstand started blarring and he dropped the controller. And as he was about to leave the bedroom his own alarm clock right next to him started blarring, but this time he was so shocked that he had to stop playing. This jumpscare was so advanced, that it project itself into real life.
I will never forget how I played Doom with 10 years or something on a Power Mac without sound and suddenly the power outlet made a huge spark and bang. The pc shut down and died.... OK that was interesting. You know how real and scary Doom was back then? Usually I had my father watching me playing Doom because I was so scared
The jumpscare I enjoy was during the cryopod section where you see a vision of a necromorph if you're not prepared then you end pumping bullets into an empty pod
I kind of expected to see the one in Alien: Isolation where, after spending most of the game hiding and outwitting the Xenomorph, you come across a room where the light suddenly comes on to reveal a prop that conveniently looks like to Xenomorphs standing back to back.

That is not a jump scare, that is just straight up scary. Jump scares are very sudden, often accompanied by a loud noise, totally overused and the absolutely weakest thing that can barely even be called horror.

NumberBndl was referring to the original comment insinuating that everything on the list is horror except Batman. As a side note, many don't consider Origins part of the main Arkham series since it wasn't from the same developer, and the story was mostly disconnected from the other games' stories.
"F*** you game" is exactly my reaction in every horror game ever. I didn't even get 15 minutes through Dead Space 3. Which is the least horror Dead Space game.
I recommend strongly playing the Dead Space in order. And yes the first is really hard to brave through. I needed to collect myself for a few days after testing the game to gather the strenght to play it whole. But boy it was worth it!

Dead Space stressed me out so much I had to take breaks between playing it, of course wearing headphones and playing in the dark didn't help. I only got through 1 and 2, because I wouldn't let myself not finish them after I had bought them lmao.
One of my "favourite" harmless jump scares happened near the beginning of the second chapter/episode in Alan Wake, where you can explore a few empty cabins near the start before the enemies start showing up. I was exploring one, looking for ammo and/or flashlight batteries and as I turned to leave I saw one of the enemies walk past the window outside. I immediately tensed up, expecting it to burst through the door or a window. After maybe half a minute of nervous waiting and nothing happening, I decided to slowly and carefully go outside and face the baddie, expecting an ambush. Nothing happened. Still really tense and nervous, I creeped around the corner where the window was facing, still expecting an attack. Nothing. I was still waiting for something to happen as I slowly walked to the road and then finally relaxed, as once again, nothing happened. I gave an audible sigh of relief and started to walk further down the road. Suddenly there was a really loud metallic noice and a sort of screaming sound and sudden movement on the screen. I was so shocked/scared I actually dropped the controller and a glass of water I was about to drink. So, what was this terrifying event? Two birds flying out of a trash can, knocking it over. When I realised that and relaxed a bit, I paused the game and laughed aloud at my reaction and the whole scene.

Or how about the adult version of that game, Layers of Fear? Still in a spooky mansion with 80% of the jumpscares being harmless, but just without the cutesy cartooniness.

You may have meant they were then holding a balloon, but in context, that apostrophe is doing a great job of making this creepier by making it "They see a blur and we are then holding a balloon." Imagine seeing a blur near you and then noticing that someone else way over there has a balloon and not being sure but being almost sure they didn't have one before. Now imagine the people trying to figure out the connection between the person who sees the blur and the person who is suddenly holding a balloon.
My personal favorite jumpscare was when I had a conversation with a merchant in Skyrim and I turned around and suddenly there was some dude DIRECTLY behind my face talking about some shit and I was like 'WTF HOW DID YOU- WHY ARE YOU HERE?'
I still love that you can see lappy sneaking behind the PC when they turn around expecting a jump scare when checking out the legion maintenance console.

Lappy is something to fear. If you complete the tour, he teaches you the secret to his sneakiness: teleportation. Even worse, when the player wears the Lappy suit, other members of the force can’t differentiate between Marie-Lappy and Player-Lappy, leading me to believe that Marie isn’t the one talking, but Lappy itself, like a somehow less scary but more horrifying Freddy suit.
Poor Luke! I’m pretty sure “every night I hear the screams” is his catch phrase at this point. So many screams - I bet his nights sound like an all hours amusement park.
I was so convinced the Until Dawn was going to be the bird scare with Mike and Jessica. I guess Mike jumping out is another one, but there are countless amounts of cheap jumpscares that lead to nothing in that game. (yet I still love it, partially to kill off Emily Everytime, I mean what? I would never kill Emily...)

I remember a good jumpscare in BioShock 1. I was looking around what looked like a Dr room (the area with a lotta ice I think or near there). After I was done looting I tried to back up and realized I couldn't. So (while still looking down) I slowly turned around and saw feet I was like "The fuck?" Then I slowly looked up and (my friend and I) jumped and yelled "OH SHIT!" at the sight of a splicer who then proceeded to scream and batter me with a pipe. I love that game.
The Legends of Zelda twilight Princess snow peak ruins boss, I was not expecting the adorable sick yeti lady to suddenly become a demon and yell at me, it was not fun. It wasn’t a false alarm but it’s still a jump scare.

I've recently got back to games after many years and at the same time discovered a genre that turned out to be an instant love for me: (indie) horror games, especially those with less focus on realistic graphics, those lo-fi / pixelated ones, but rather on the atmosphere and pure psycho terror. The first game I've played was Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion and it doesn't cease to amaze me. The way it starts off cute, with those innocent cardboard cutout jumpscares, constantly getting darker and more unsettling, first with the ambience sounds, then with the bosses / specimens, being pretty much one big escape run from monsters, that's what I love about it. So guys and girls, do you know any other similar games that start off cute and innocent, giving a false sense of safety, just to be downright terrifying at the end?
I get jump scared on a regular basis at work (I cook in a care home), when the carers decide to sneak into the kitchen while I'm busy washing dishes (listening to the radio and in my own little world) and then just appear next to me with an empty cup, or even stand right behind me with their empty plate and say "that was really nice, thanks", scariest compliments ever! 😅
What about the hotel level though - when you pick up the newspaper article and the dryer goes off behind you. I made the mistake of first playing that alone, in the dark, with headphones on. I haven't noped out of a game so fast before or since.
Or the entire game really... Its a recurrent thing... They cant jump scare you with something really dangeeous because you are a strong ass vampire that ends up killing monsters thatbare not supposed to be killed by young vampires at all... Swollen searcher (sound effect) 2. The Butcher Gang (sounds, and sudden appearances) 3. When you first meet Bendy/The Ink Demon 4. Searchers 5. EVERY SINGLE BENDY CUTOUT The jumpscare that didn't scare me... like at all: 1. Alice Angel's introduction (Pretty sure Batim peeps can relate) Me: "Okay! I know there's a cutout in that closet by Wally's tape..." *inches near the closet, nothing happens* Me: *Scoots closer confused* *Cutout abruptly appears* Me, and my friend that was watching: *Bloodwailing shriek* !!!
Layers Of Fear was basically just a game based on this premise (most of the time) but the one that really got me when after falling into the basement by the fire place (which I expected) you turn on the light by the stairs and when you turn around there’s now a painting right behind you...THAT got me good!

The game has creepy things yet is mostly boring. Could of done better with its lore it has.

Actually in the cannon of the games the Penguin legally owned the museum and built the iceberg lounge into it. They actually had nothing on Penguin to put him in Arkham City, but he refused to move out of the area, unwilling to give up his prize jewel, the Iceberg Lounge. It was he’s best shot at being part of Gotham’s elite, ruined by the Joker on its opening day, now just the strong hold of another kingpin in Gotham’s underbelly, sealed off from the world as a prison is built around it, and himself.
And the Penguin running it explains perfectly why you'd have that jump scare in a family attraction.

Even worse, when the player wears the Lappy suit, other members of the force can’t differentiate between Marie-Lappy and Player-Lappy, leading me to believe that Marie isn’t the one talking, but Lappy itself, like a somehow less scary but more horrifying Freddy suit.

I remember a good jumpscare in BioShock 1. I was looking around what looked like a Dr room (the area with a lotta ice I think or near there). After I was done looting I tried to back up and realized I couldn't. So (while still looking down) I slowly turned around and saw feet I was like "The fuck?" Then I slowly looked up and (my friend and I) jumped and yelled "OH SHIT!" at the sight of a splicer who then proceeded to scream and batter me with a pipe.
I love that game.

The Legends of Zelda twilight Princess snow peak ruins boss, I was not expecting the adorable sick yeti lady to suddenly become a demon and yell at me, it was not fun. It wasn’t a false alarm but it’s still a jump scare.

I've recently got back to games after many years and at the same time discovered a genre that turned out to be an instant love for me: (indie) horror games, especially those with less focus on realistic graphics, those lo-fi / pixelated ones, but rather on the atmosphere and pure psycho terror.
The first game I've played was Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion and it doesn't cease to amaze me. The way it starts off cute, with those innocent cardboard cutout jumpscares, constantly getting darker and more unsettling, first with the ambience sounds, then with the bosses / specimens, being pretty much one big escape run from monsters, that's what I love about it. So guys and girls, do you know any other similar games that start off cute and innocent, giving a false sense of safety, just to be downright terrifying at the end?

I get jump scared on a regular basis at work (I cook in a care home), when the carers decide to sneak into the kitchen while I'm busy washing dishes (listening to the radio and in my own little world) and then just appear next to me with an empty cup, or even stand right behind me with their empty plate and say "that was really nice, thanks", scariest compliments ever! 😅

How about the museum level in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines? That raptor statue gets me every time, I swear, and it doesn't even move.
What about the hotel level though - when you pick up the newspaper article and the dryer goes off behind you. I made the mistake of first playing that alone, in the dark, with headphones on. I haven't noped out of a game so fast before or since.

They cant jump scare you with something really dangeeous because you are a strong ass vampire that ends up killing monsters thatbare not supposed to be killed by young vampires at all... So they just make it sudden so you shit yournpants and either procede to just do nothing cos itnwas nothing, or kill the lame enemy thatbisnt really trouble for you
I have 4 jumpscares (all from the same game) that shouldn't have scared me, because I either expected it to happen, wasn't expecting it at all, or knew about it already but still did:

2. The Butcher Gang (sounds, and sudden appearances)
3. When you first meet Bendy/The Ink Demon
4. Searchers
5. EVERY SINGLE BENDY CUTOUT
The jumpscare that didn't scare me... like at all:

Layers Of Fear was basically just a game based on this premise (most of the time) but the one that really got me when after falling into the basement by the fire place (which I expected) you turn on the light by the stairs and when you turn around there’s now a painting right behind you...THAT got me good!
