I bought my nephew a faber castelle charcoal kit and he hasn’t used it because he doesn’t understand charcoal. He is so incredibly talented at only 14 and I want him to live up to his full potential and try every medium out there. Even if I go bankrupt in the process. Lol

That’s really great of you. Faber Castell is a great brand. I used graphite until I graduated high school because that is what I got compliments on-it was my safe zone. 10 years later colored pencils/pastels are my favorite. Your nephew will grow and will later be thankful he already has the supplies when he’s ready to try something new 👍❤️

There are 3 things we should have :
    1. Blending material

Do you ever use charcoal as a subtractive medium rather than additive? I've had a lot of fun with creating dark backgrounds and using mostly erasers to create drawings. This was a great video, definitely makes me want to play more with this medium.

  • @driesketels

A diamond is nothing more then a piece of charcoal that handled pressure extremely well. Every charcoal drawing therefore has, from a materialistic perspective, the innate ability to become a diamond. That's probably why charcoal is one of my all time favorite mediums. One of the best mediums to start with for beginners as well. As a beginner you have to understand that art has to be one of a kind. It should be precious, extremely rare and unique... It should be like a diamond.
    Great video Kirsty

Well should not be precious because diamond is pure carbon
And purest allotrope but charcoal have lumps of impurities and flaws in structure of carbon so it is not that precious and beautifully

hi! i know this is way out of time already but i suggest if u use black charcoal pencils on ur drawings, u might want to use a white gel pens (or just regular white pen) instead bcos with my experience using white charcoal on black charcoal isn"t gonna give u the best result, black charcoal gives my white charcoal a trace of black which sucks, so yeah i suggest don't use white charcoal on black charcoal :DD hope this helps (somehow) :DD

If selling artwork like that it would be really useful to prevent smudging. I have to ask Kristy P.: you seriously use Arches paper for charcoal with Lyra charcoal pencils? Arches is some really good paper but, why not use quality charcoal pencils? Lyra is okay, I have nothing bad to say about them... I like their oil color pencils (with use only with Polychromos & Derwent Lightfast). That said: Cretacolor, Conte a Paris, & W&N. Even Nitram & General's Primo, I would consider Archer Paper worthy before Lyra (at least in the beginning as General's is the only company that makes a 2H Charcoal Pencil, that comoes in real handy, time to time) . Staedtler Mars Black or Wolff's for Carbon Pencils. Lastly, Cretacolor & Conte a Paris, for "drawing pencils," (drawing pencils, as in your sanguine, sepia, chalk white, ect.).
Again, I'm not knocking Lyra. I think they make solid art products (certainly better than Prismacolor these last several years). What I am saying is this: Lyra charcoal is not in the same league as Arches paper. If you're going to use a cheaper charcoal, why not General's, which is on the same quality level as Lyra but, cheaper! You wouldn't use kids watercolors with an Arches Watercolor Block, right? Same premise with Charcoal, no?
Just my 2 cents. Perhaps I am missing something. In the end, use what you prefer - Lyra or otherwise would be the advice I would tell anyone. To me it just seems a little off, on a quality vs. $$$, spent.

$$$, spent.

    For highlights
    Use two different erasers

I assume I have to spray a coating on top of my drawings so they don’t smudge. Can anyone recommend what product to use? Much love to all!

Can we use spray in the end?

    • @xDEADP00Lx
      @xDEADP00Lx หลายเดือนก่อน

I've seen hairspray used to help preserve the drawing but you need to spay it from a distance don't spray it too close to the drawing you basically want to mist it a few times from a few feet away.
