I can’t count how many times I was told to never blend my charcoal with my fingers. My instructors were great but you are a true artist. What a lovely drawing!

      Thank you 😃
Maybe it’s because of the oils in the skin? I love using my fingers - a great natural tool we have at our disposal

My two cents on the topic has always been that it’s all good to blend w/fingers if it’s integrated into the process, and you’re not going for a highly refined finish. The issue is when you’re working on something like a cast drawing, it can create different levels of absorbency in the paper and cause darker patches in areas meant for an even tone. But for most circumstances isn’t a problem as long as you’re methodical about it.

Thanks for sharing this awesome drawing and process! Really cool to see how you balance simplification/complexity, and the big decisions like leaving those trees out. It’s hard to see the forest through the trees when you’re in it. ;).

Hi Andrew, I really appreciate your charcoal work, whether you use water and casein or not. I like seeing the different techniques and tricks you invent to make your tools perform at their best, so much so that in some parts they look like anything but charcoal. Some of these works remind me of good chalcographic engravings in which you find bold blacks, total whites and a whole range of half tones. Thanks for the videos you share. Martha

Highly professional work, also full of creativity and sensibility. Not surprising to have been promoted by the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
