It takes a great level of mastery to leave a great portion of the canvas to chaos or abstraction, but still keeping a focused realistic part, which stands out even more on this chaotic background. Very impressive.❤
I love your natural way of explains art methods. It’s no direct by the book structures, there’s lots of feeling in your description which other artists can recognise and relate to!
Don't know why TH-cam decided to put one of your shorts in my feed, but I'm glad it did :) I really love your work, and I love how your seemingly "random strokes" (at first) end up creating a beautiful portrait. Or, as the title of your video suggests, how beauty emerges out of chaos. Beautiful work ! I wish I could express as much with my photography :)
Same here. TH-cam algorithm decided to feed me one of your shorts. Now, 2 hours later, my iPad battery is depleted and I’m just sitting here awestruck and speechless. I love your works, your style, your explanations and your intent with each stroke. A true artist.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! It really helped me understand that the fundamentals are really a bunch of tools in a toolbox that an artist uses to depict a subject or capture the essence of it and leave the rest of the information vague or abstract, study it, or even make sense of it. To the effect of what you said, it's a series of steps of intentional thinking, practice, and instincts that produces an image. And determining how well or unwell you're conveying a certain element or fundmental lets you know if you need to change something or explore another direction within the image. When you said realism is really how clear the information is helped me make sense of that. Again, thank you so much!
Really enjoyed this rendering. It looked complete several times then you smeared, blended, created depth and detail over and over. At 11:04 the subject was looking out at something then with a stroke of eraser at 11:08 the subjected was then looking down. Almost like it was a movie frame, moving in time, changing gestures as you sketched. Thank you for sharing this process.
Your explanation of becoming stale or hitting a wall in progressing is so true with many artists. I've experienced this as a drummer. You keep at it and getting inspiration from other artists can open up doors that you didn't know existed. I love the way your production is quick and fluid, along with your explanations, which makes viewing you working is a rush.
Thank you so very much for this session. It puts me back in my classes at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California in 1964. Yes, that long ago. I watched last evening when you were doing a young man and I was once again in Prof. Grano's class learning values. Thank you.
Another really amazing drawing, and your additional information related to the types and locations of the form and cast shadows was a good refresher for me, keeping the chaos within the drawing creates a lot more interest, than something closer to a photo, thank you MSG Leum
I think you are highly talented using charcoal. I love using charcoal and I have been following your example. I have a feel for charcoal and love making art from shadows.
C’est incroyable comme ce visage prend vie sous vos doigts experts , je trouve cela fascinant Merci de partager votre savoir faire et toutes mes félicitations pour votre ART de Belgique 🇧🇪
Your art is amazing man! I do charcoal and graphite work, not to your standard, but really awesome to see and appreciate the techniques you use, even ones I've never thought of, amazing!😁🔥
I must say that I love your art and style. Your process has given me the courage to try working with charcoal after many years of fear 😅 Also, your explanations are so precise and clear. And your attitude is so unpretentious, for someone who clearly possesses much talent and experience. Thank you for sharing all of this.
We have alot in common with our working technique. One letting the piece develop itself. And two pulling beauty out of chaos. My drafting skills will always be the foundation of my painting. It was really good to see another artist who has the skill and passion for his art.
Coming into this from photography and photo editing, I think really helped me understand the way light and shadow fall on a face. Dodge and burn is essentially sculpting a face in the digital realm. And I have no shortage of reference photos 😂But learning to work with charcoal has been a bit of a learning curve for sure.
Thanks for sharing your techniques and amazing drawings! I’ve drawn with pencil on and off all my life. I start gesturally and get more detailed as I go like you mentioned, but the flexibility of charcoal you demonstrated to even out tones at whatever point in a drawing and then bring back out the light and shadows is awesome. It’s crazy to me how fast you can change the mood of a subject using charcoal. You mentioned squinting, I do that as well,, sometimes I also turn drawings upside down to get a different perspective on things if that makes sense. I wish you continued success in your artistic journey!
Thanks so much for the video. I’d love to see a video where you go into composition and structuring the subject in the frame. Some of my pieces look a little unbalanced but yours always have a lovely balanced aesthetic. I’m not sure if this is something you consciously consider when drawing or if it’s something you’ve developed over time with practice, but any advice would be appreciated!
I have done charcoal drawings before and its very rewarding. What are the names.of the charcoal pencils , white , weight are these..wiuld like to find these..and what kind od board do you use ? Thank you your work is very motivated and inspiring. Keep up the good work greatly appreciated !!!!! Wpould like to see 5he actual finish piece !!!!!
@@MadCharcoal honestly, much better that you didnt said it, given some people will bash you for it, thanks for the contents tho! You inspired me to tackle this art style which I've been wanting to learn and suddenly your tutorial saved me
Would love to see a thumbnail of your subject in a corner of your videos so we could watch and compare your shaping, shading/contrast and dimension references as the work progresses.
In grade one I had to draw a baboon with a brown crayon. I started off with random chaos just like this but unlike this drawing, mine soon went in circles untill the crayon was to short to hold. It ended in a huge ball of brown nothing.
This particular charcoal portrait has the look of one done by the master Nicolai Fechin, the Russian painter. I think you’d enjoy seeing his charcoal drawings. I’m really enjoying seeing your style with the charcoal and am taking a lot of inspiration from it. Thanks,
You are a charcoal master. Beautiful portraits with personality.

Your so helpful I've just started drawing again after 50 years I'm loving it ,,,,from Scotland
I love watching your drawing become real. It looks photorealistic but with abstract elements. Thank you so much!!!
Exactly
I just cannot believe how you create such real pictures so fast...JUST amazing.

il faut des années de pratique pour avoir un résultat valable et convainquant. Mais un travail personnel ne ressemble à aucun autre 😊
Beautiful 💕🤗
Had me mesmerized,,beautiful work and appreciate the tutorial.

The Art of No Limitations! Freedom of Expression! ☺️
Artista magico...un mix di disegno classico e arte moderna
Amazing. I love watching you work and hearing about your process.
thanks, i really appreciated all the commentary on how to consider the interplay of abstract and detailed.

Enjoyed this a lot.

Wow! 💜💜💜🔆👌👌👌
Genial excelente ❤😮

Question: could you use soft pastels the same way or is there something fundamentally unique about charcoal?
very cool ❤
Id like to know more about the back board you're using. Did you build it?
Amazing stream-of-consciousness art.
hello, can you give more infos about the paper (mg) you are using ?
This is way better than my stick figures. 😮
