What do you use to seal your artwork so it won't transfer? Can you use the same stuff for different types of medium (pencil, watercolor, pastel, charcoal etc)? Thanks :)
On the topic of charcoal, I'm curious if you use a separate tortillions/brushes and eraser for charcoal vs graphite? Is there concern about the dark charcoal accidentally transferring to a future graphite project from those tools? How do you brush off all the little bits of charcoal? Blow them off, or brush them with a drafting brush? Would there be any value in using a workable fixative throughout the project, to protect from ruining the parts that you are already happy with, and then continuing on top of the preserved layer? Is charcoal as easily erased as graphite? Is there powdered charcoal to use in art, as there is graphite powder? Would there be any value/interest to starting a project with a different medium, say neutral tones of watercolor, then adding the dark values with charcoal, similar to how some mix watercolor with colored pencil? Also, do all of the same rules apply to white charcoal? I would love to see white charcoal on black paper. So many questions! lol Thanks for all of the great videos!
charcoal is one of my favorites... it has the diamond potential for every drawing you make... you know a diamond is nothing more then a piece of charcoal that handled stress exceptionally well.
Am I the only one who enjoys the mess? I love looking at my hands and seeing them covered in charcoal. I love using my hands on the paper, I love really immersing myself. But I guess that's just me 😅
When I attended university I was first introduced to charcoal by my instructor through vine charcoal. This messy problem really turned me off of the medium. Imagine my surprise and delight when I figured out there are charcoal pencils! Such a much more enjoyable experience. You make some fantastic suggestions around this issue in this video. Very well done!
Kirstey, just stopping by to say thanks for all the videos. Over a few years I’ve practiced what you teach. You even critiqued one of my drawings, and this helped me so much. Today I’m getting loads of applause for a drawing I have just finished. Thanks!!
in my country don't have this charcoal pencil..i gotta burn some woods to get charcoal and applied it to my bursh to make a tone.It much easier than using graphite to make a tone.i got this idea (using charcoal) after watching your previous videos.Your videos make me understand more about the technique and it much easier for me as a beginner.Thank you kirsty.your art and your videos are awesome!
I have always resorted to keeping busy and SMILE when your sad, even when you do not want to, SMILE! If you can not force yourself to draw or paint go do something you enjoy, but stay BUSY!
Hi Kirsty. You are one of my favorite artist and instructor. I have learned so, so much from you. I have learned more from you in 2 weeks than I have in 4 months from everyone else combined. You explain things very easily and you don't act like a big goof or use sex to get people to watch your videos. I have such a great deal of respect for you. I hope that those who are watching will subscribe and like your videos. I understand how much time it takes to make and post these things. Thanks again.
Since lockdown. I've loved getting back into art and trying new mediums. I'd never tried water colours until watching one of your videos and now I'm looking forward to trying charcoal. Great channel 👍
Could you do a video on sealers for the different mediums you use. Your art work is wonderful. Your teaching is wonderful. Thank you so much. The best to you.
This is a really well made video, it's clear, sharp visuals with good displays that are timed perfectly with the voice over. Love the production quality thank you Kirsty.
Charcoal is my favorite medium too. I just love the look and how many shades from light to super dark. I never used my fingers.. Thinking of doing that makes me cringe 😖 I've always used the different size blending sticks, but I never thought to use paint brushes.. So I'll definitely try those at some point.
I would love to use charcoal but it gives me such severe goosebumps/chills/shivers and makes every strand of hair in my body stand up like a great stallion.
Hi Kirsty, what paper do you recommend for charcoal.l noticed you used a rough paper in this video, but I like to work on smooth, does it take the charcoal well or is a rough paper better. Thanks for your tutorials, I have learnt so much from them.
Wow hace mucho tiempo. Excelente video.
Thank you for another great video and great help. This drawing of yours is amazing. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful talent and experience with us
Pastels are also "messy" I have resorted to a dust-buster type of vacuum that is HEPA filtered and using Glassine papers to keep the surface and my self clean! OH I loved the elephant drawing you flashed to in this video! The Sky was amazing! watching you do some dramatic backgrounds would be a good video too!
I love working with charcoal. Make-up sponges and applicators also work for blending as well as Q-Tips. I like to do reductive charcoal. A video on that would be great!
Very helpful video! I've tried charcoal for animals and the results were good, but I haven't tried it for portraits yet, because I don't know how it will end up. Great work, though, keep it up! 😀
Thank you Kirsty. Great tips! To clean off the charcoal powder that accumulates I never use a brush as it smears sometimes. I periodically use a small handheld vacuum of low power at an angle (mine charges on the computer).
Hi, i didn't get much toys in my childhood, so i spent a lot time with drawing. 1 time i got a charcoal pen even i didn't know what it was. Thanks for decades of years how to use it...but i had had my own joy with it :)
finally!!! i was so bummed off from charcoal... i used the blending tool, and then that didn't do good because it was dirty.. only with brush its possible to get that fine lines i'm so wanting to achieve. thank you!
I swore I never use Charcoal bcuz I'm left-handed & so I REALLY smudge ! However, after following your tutorial s I'm sold on it since u use the pencil ones ( for the most part anyway) & no ,I never use my fingers to blend it; except w/ a tissue that is..!P.S. & Wet Wipes are definitely a big help👍
Compilation video on "hey everybody'" from your Intro, that would brighten the Day. Excuse me. Your videos are certainly helpful and your work outstanding.
Your work out of this world! What is the archival life of your paintings? How do you protect your work, considering the apparent large scale of your drawings?
I love charcoal. I don't mind the mess, part of the process, and a side effect of nice characteristics of this medium, the flexibity of it. You can move it, layer it, lift it of the paper, nothing is final.
Very Nice video👍 ur art is amazing😍 Can you please make video on how to protect charcoal drawings after completion, how to prevent them from getting spoiled
Lol the day we used charcoal in art class we came out looking like a bunch of chimney sweeps. X3 It was an interesting medium to use, tho! It's perfect for learning how to work with shades and lighting!
It's the mess that draws me to it! I want my hands to be covered. There is something about getting messy and making a nice and satisfying drawing. There's nothing like it. It is by far my favorite medium.
Can you do a video on using Arteza watercolor... it is a lot cheaper than winsor and newton watercolor so I want to see if I should go ahead and get the winsor and newton watercolor pallete or if the Arteza one would work well too but not so expensive... thank you!
Omg! You're extremely talented, no matter the medium, simply the best. I just can't understand those thumbs down. Probably jealous people.... By the way: that elephant... simply magical. I love your work!
I suddenly want to draw with charcoals now xdd this is so great, thank you! Amazing channel, love all your tutorials and artworks, they're so beautiful!
I'm currently practicing charcoal portraits 😉. Thanks a lot for this another tutorial! 👍🏻. Please do make a tutorial about monochromatic watercolor portraits or abstract watercolor portraits. 🙏🏻 thanks! - love for the Philippines 🇵🇭
QOTD: What other videos would you like to see about charcoal? What charcoal topics/ techniques do you want me to talk about? 💕
Hair, in charcoal please (if you haven't already 😊). Also, have you used a carbon pencil before? Thoughts on them? Love your channel, and thanks!😊👍✏️
I have trouble blending charcoal. Tips?
What do you use to seal your artwork so it won't transfer? Can you use the same stuff for different types of medium (pencil, watercolor, pastel, charcoal etc)? Thanks :)

Agreed!
One messy pup right here

I adore both types, wood and pencils, sometimes I combine them into a single drawing

This has really helped, I've picked up charcoal recently and drawing in general for the first time since I was a teen.

Can you please give us advice on artist burnout and how to deal with it? Also on how to push past the dark moods and darker times in a person's life.
Hmmm, sounds like a good idea.
I have always resorted to keeping busy and SMILE when your sad, even when you do not want to, SMILE! If you can not force yourself to draw or paint go do something you enjoy, but stay BUSY!
Talk to God about it 😉
I don't think anyone should advise about that over the internet. You need to speak to a qualified therapist or doctor. Good luck x
@@Lulusnotreadyforthis What are you on about? 😂😂😂 I mean gloomy spells or days when we are not passionate about our craft.
Charcoal was always a fear for me . But this change my mind thank you mam 😊😊😊

love charcoal, its not the mess that bugs me its the breakage that bugs me :p
the drawing is gorgeous :)
Breakage?
@@monicas1646 charcoal is so fragile, it breaks easily 🙂
But when I use the pencils it doesn’t
Only if you drop the pencil
the sticks break it seems if you just look at them wrong 😛
Thank you Kirsty. I love how you work and talk at the same time. ☺️❤️
I have started sketching portraits after seeing your videos, love the way you sketch, really inspiring 😊

You draw so beautifully and diverse, and your lessons are general and clear, answering, i believe, every question i think of. Thank u
You are always so helpful. So articulate. And just a really good teacher.
U r such a talented artist

There are charcoal pads, she might be using that (4 years late lol)
Charcoal is definitely my worst medium, but after watching this video, I am inspired to try working with it again! ❤️
Torres Artist Honestly same here! All it takes is practice and dedication 😊
I haven’t used charcoal for years
Kelvin Javier Me neither, but i think now would be a good time to start again 🤗
forever in the sun yep! how long have you been using charcoal?
Torres Artist not long but i’m going to pick it up again soon :)
Amazing advice today i used a wet brush on charcoal and it worked great thank you for your vids!!!!
My tip to reduce unwanted smudges. Draw wit the piece at about a 45-30° angle. And use a mahl stick
I love the way you talked. I can listen to you all day 😊

Another way to keep from smudging is a spray that you can put between layers. It’s specifically for pencils and charcoals.
