my favorite part of the video 26:10 Trane gives a little frown to Stan and cracks himself up. Almost like saying “this guy oscar is pretty good” or “here goes nothing.” If only we could hear their conversation after the gig.
This is amazing that we can watch Coltrane and this band - these players - at anytime. Thank you for the effort to upload and share this - very much appreciated. The internet is a time machine-miracle sometimes ; )
I wish a video existed of Coltrane talking, but this is as close as we are going to get, speaking through his horn. I always appreciated this really intimate look at Coltrane at the time, a big transitional part of his short life. I believe the story behind this recording is that this is technically Miles Davis' Quintet, but Miles couldn't make the gig. You almost feel that without Miles there, we get a clearer view and sound of the bandmembers. To me, Trane appears a bit tense in this recording. It could be from travel fatigue, or maybe he feels some pressure as I know he had a lot of respect for Stan. It's nice to see Trane on his journey. Wish he was alive today. Peace.
That transition between Coltrane playing “What’s New” and Getz playing “Moonlight in Vermont” at 23:30-23:36 is so exquisite. Two absolute masters at work with arguably one of the greatest rhythm sections in jazz. It doesn’t get better than this.
Miles Davis ne sait pas trompé,ce type est un génie et reste le symbole d’un musicien extraordinaire qui a toujours été en avant-garde… Merci pour cette vidéo ❤
It’s so beautiful that there is still so much music that has been lost to time and that is being uploaded for us to enjoy and learn so much from. Beautiful performance.
How wonderful and fascinating to hear Getz and Coltrane's contrasting styles together during this time period. Great lighting and camera work add to the allure.
Super, thanks! Wynn Kelly is rare on video and a fantastic stylist. Trane is at his very best on Dolphin. But even the unlikely encounter with Getz (Tweedledum and Tweedledee agreed to have a battle?) is enlightening. Trane tends to „imitate himself“ as Ellington noticed, while Getz keeps swinging all the time. What a beautiful rhythm section! I have wondered for a long time though, who told Chambers it was a good idea to play those arco chorusses?
John Coltrane, tenor saxophone; Wynton Kelly, piano; Paul Chambers, double bass; Jimmy Cobb, drums, are the nucleus of that mythical group by Miles Davis, who recorded Kind of Blue in 1959, so you could not expect anything less.

It is good to find reason to be grateful indeed.

Great recording and performance of the giants of jazz!!👌
Wynton Kelly blows me away on this
@@RalphDratmanThis rhythm section also recorded with Wes Montgomery. Wynton smokes on those recordings.
@@kenster3554 I can't even describe the effect he has on my ears and my brain.
Saw Coltrane first and last time, the Royal Arm nite club, buffalo NY I was completely taken away.

Oh my.
マイルス・デイビスクインテット(マイルス抜き)。それがなんか新鮮。
I’d like to know how much of Trane’s discography is on film? Watching how musicians inhabit the bandstand adds context to their genius.
💗
Wow profound, l!
wow
😊

Must have been opening for Oscar Peterson--- those are Ed Thigpen's drums.
I saw Thigpen play live with Stan Getz at the Stockholm Jazz and Blues Festival years ago. Like Cobb, he was a legendary drummer.
