Jet Li - that was the name I couldn't remember! Thank you.
I could picture his face whenever they were talking about the chain necklace but couldn't remember the name. When I think of Asian action actors with the name of 'Li/Lee' I immediately think of Bruce Lee. Seems like all other Asian actors after Bruce are trying to fill that void he left behind. Some come close but none will ever be the same.
Keep up the good work my friends.

They're marketed to the 'Before' photo in a Charles Atlas ad, to the average person whose last fight was in grade school, to the people who don't have the time or money to train, to the physically frail. Some of the designers might even think they're helping people.
What they do is give a false sense of security. While that extra spring in the step might dissuade some attackers, others will take the chance.
The hidden stabby in the brush is only useful if nobody took away the kidnap victim's purse and she keeps her composure enough to lull her attackers into thinking she's helpless. Then she could get the drop on one and either escape or take his gun.

I've been into a lot of fights in my day. I've had the most trouble with 2 kinds of opponents. The superbly obese and the small and squirly. Body type isn't necessarily an indicator of one's ability to fight. Mindset is most important. Skill is a close second, as skill is worthless without the mind to use it.

Most states are less lenient than Michigan regarding length.

I have these exact same Buddha Beads. Martial Arts has been part of my life for such a long time including weapons combat. Using this necklace is deceiving, however I am comfortable using this as a tool for self defense out of the endless options available. I do NOT wear it around my neck as I use it for mantras, and if I am ever out with it, I keep it wrapped around my hand and wrist. Accurately striking someone where I want to is not a concern for me, but keep in mind, martial arts is what I have dedicated myself to. An inexperienced individual may only put themselves in danger if used in false confidence. The points made in this video are valid and those using such tools for self defense should educate themselves or choose another weapon. Good health to all.

The spike brush is the least gimmicky, knives are obvious & metallic. That being said, if you have no idea what youre doing, neither these nor anything else will save you, to include firearms. Ive seen so many ppl who have the same idea with firearms as the ppl buying some of these, thinking theyre safe and dont need to train bc the item will save them. It will not, & you are supplying the perp with a gun & ammo. This mentality needs to end, like years ago. Its almost 2019, how can one live being that dumb?

Wow I was just writing in my notebook about this yesterday. Not the same equipment but the same concept. Knives, mace, stun guns, and even firearms are all useless unless you can get to it. Unless you are already carrying the weapon your chances of accessing it once attacked are slim and even dangerous if the attacker gets your weapon or gets it away from you during deployment. And being real you can't just walk down the street with a weapon in hand so you are never going to be ready to deploy it. An example I use to drive this home is the shoe tie test. First tie you shoe while kneeling. Then do it again while several people lightly or moderately attacking you. I bet you notice a difference and you have the advantage of knowing it is coming. Same things happens when you try to put keys in a car, dail a phone number and deploy a weapon. Only in real life it is 1000% worse.

I disagree with this. Several years ago I was walking down a backwoods road to visit a friend when I heard rustling and growling from behind me. I had maybe 2 seconds from being alerted to the danger to turn around and confront a stray dog that was rushing towards me. It was pure instinct, but I stabbed the thing in the side of it's neck when it lunged at me and then kicked it away.
I still don't know how my knife (which was my BSA 100 year anniversary knife - if you want to look up the style) went from closed in my pocket to open in my hand in time to defend myself. I don't remember anything at all as to my actions prior to stabbing the dog, but it happened wayyy faster than I imagined. Hindsight being 20/20, I wish the thing had barked or something. I would have rather not used the knife, as most dogs can be deterred by a swift kick to the face, but I didn't know what was coming at me and used what I had on hand.
Anyway, TL;DR - when your life is on the line, you can react much faster than you think.

The best self defence is common sense,
Avoid walking in dimly lit areas like subways or ally ways if you can, if you cannot, put up your hood and walk in the shadows and if you see any louts or potentially dangerous people hanging about try to locate an alternate route if you cannot do that get ready with any self defence tool you keep on your person and do not draw attention to yourself and if a situation does kick off and if you have an opportunity to run do it otherwise show your ready to fight back in confidence, most criminal scum only target the weak if you show confidence and awareness while walking around you will appear not an easy target very few criminals go out looking for a fair fight and of course it helps if you maintain fitness and learn a fighting style that teaches you to fight but to avoid any fight at all costs is effective self defence, your fighting skills are to be used if there is no other option

In any self defence situation always add the ever present ingredient "liar." Does anyone think the attacker will tell the truth to law enforcement? He'll say that he was the target of e.g.., racial taunts by you, and that you pulled a hair brush that was really a knife, and he'll produce witnesses. It happens all the time. The law doesn't know what happened. Victory goes to the best actor in court.
Once you pull any weapon the perp can also claim self-defence. you give up all your legal rights and the perp can seem like the victim. You need to think about all of this and plan your self defence strategy accordingly.

That sort of item works fine when you're in countries where carrying any sort of weapons is forbidden, are useful to pass across police controls, in those places you must be careful of polices as you're of gangsters, and is always better having an knife than just your bare hands when walking in those streets, mine is attached (but hidden) to my purse, outside, and looks like an ornament. It worked once, and I always carry it. And it's totally true you need at least basic training to use it right! . the point with hidden blades is that the assholes never expects you have one, and the sudden response to their attack provides you time enough to run away.

    • @abnunga

I'm in a country where it's illegal to carry anything for self defense, and most of these items would get you in trouble if you used them (GBH if you stabbed someone with a hairbrush-shiv). You're far better to have a dual-purpose alibi object like a heavy torch or a walking stick.

    • @Spetulhu
      @Spetulhu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Aye, not every country is the USA. The ring and cap attachment probably wouldn't register, but a heavy chain could and a hairbrush shiv certainly would be considered "carrying an object suitable for harming people with in public". And if you had to use a hidden weapon in self-defense you'd give the attacker's defense attorney a field day against you. You're a delusional survivalist waiting for a chance to use your sneaky weapons at the slightest excuse, a danger to society who should be locked up!

what do you think about kubotan? I use one as a key pendant, which I could take out kind of fast (usually i have a small end of it looking out of my pocket which I can use to pull out in less than a second). I know basic handling with it, but im not sure if it would really help, though. Sure, swinging a small stack of keys through someones face or using the end of it to punch it into some sensitive spots. I didn't train for quite some time now and don't know if I'd still be able to reliably hit useful spots with it so it really matters that I even have one.

  • @BluntInnit
    @BluntInnit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Used to carry a kobotan, and did train with it especially drawing it.
Never had to pull it but did put my hand on it several times when it looked like a situation could get out of hand. Also showed the end of it to a mugger that was scoping me and planning to rob me, however demonstrating that I was aware of him and that I was armed and prepared, meant that he couldn't get the jump on me so went looking for another target.
So completely agree that any self defense tool needs training.
Also saw a few videos of crazy armed to the teeth yanks showing what they packed in their ECBs and one really stuck in my mind (think he was in a state with gun laws but did watch a few and some had packed guns safely in the bottom of their bags, lol). The guy had a bag within his bag filled with self defense tools, as well as a baton, many duplications on knives, pepper spray and torches, etc. but not one of them was on his direct person, so not one of them was effective for self defense. He tried to justify it that if things kicked off he could take the bag out of his bag and quickly stash his many duplicate tools about his person, but that's not how self defense works. If you can't pull a tool out and get it into action in under 1 second then it is just extra weight you are carrying and it doesn't stand a chance of saving your life.

Almost 25 years ago a really good friend bought me one of those "ninja keychains"(look it up on google if you don't know what I'm referring to), and I have carried it pretty much every day and everywhere since then. At that point I had already practiced extensively with a kubotan so this was the same on steroids. I only got to "use" it once. Some guy tried to start a fight when I was walking with my daughter, and I dropped into a fighting stance and he caught a glimpse of it and suddenly he wasn't interested. It's easy to camouflage in such a way that nobody thinks it's a weapon.....use it as a keychain and put lots of keys on it. Hold it loose in your hands with the 2 finger spikes through your fingers(they should naturally pull upward to hide behind your hand) and it'll look like you're just holding a keychain and people will fuzz out the 2 spikes sticking in between your fingers if they happen to see them. I have more problems entering night clubs with my chained wallet***** than with my keychain.
***** it's kept me from losing thousands of dollars over the years and the two I've had only cost me $50 total, don't judge

This is a great video and I'm glad this channel and others like it are around to help dispel these kinds of thoughts about self defense.
Just as a side-note: I've never even seen any of those self defense tools/weapons before until I saw this video lol Where I live almost all items/weapons for self defense are illegal to carry save for a licensed firearm or a folding knife with no assisted opening methods. (That includes but not limited to: Flippers, auto-knives, even thumb studs count as assisted opening) Since I have no training in how to use a knife and I don't carry a firearm, I'm most comfortable protecting myself bare-handed. It's just nice to know that I'm not necessarily doing myself a disservice by not carrying anything.
I'm lucky to have training as it has saved my life a couple of times, and I'm glad that organizations and information like this group are active and available to allow people to train and learn to protect themselves as realistically as possible. I totally agree that someone with no skills, might hurt themselves, or piss someone off, using any of these items. On the other hand, someone with a martial arts background, can use many items as a weapon...
Considering most who have Mala beads wear them wrapped around the wrist, it's easy to use them in blocks, or deployed, whip them doing significant damage. I grabbed one to check out, and the beads come in solid brass or stainless, it has some good weight, and a plastic coated steel aircraft cable connecting them. I agree that it could potentially be used against you, when worn around your neck, but as someone who wears different prayer beads, and having a martial arts background, I think it's a solid option in a pinch. If they are ever needed, they have the potential to do some serious damage. Traditional mala (prayer beads) are seads, wood, bone, or stones, and can be used, but these could take a serious beating as well as dish it out. As an extension to your reach, as well as in several defensive techniques.
No its not a knife or gun, but you have to admit that, in the right hands, could be useful if needed, in a self defense situation. I don't think that there was anything else there that I'd bother with, but I don't wander around with a hair brush lol. Just my thoughts on it, but like I said, I totally agree with you.

My only question is how strong is the cord or whatever used to keep those beads together cuz if it's strong enough I can see a guy like me who is strong enough to pick up a guy who's 270lbs no problem just picking someone up by those beads in the Strangling them like that hang man style

If you can preempt the attack the hair brush with the concealed spike WOULD DEFINITELY be useful 💯👍🏻

Just walk around with a masterlock in your pocket and wear it like brass knuckles cheap and effective but yeah one should at least train and learn how to punch train for the worst better to be safe than sorry love this video very honest and straight to the point 👍

A 9 section chain would be very practical, what is your view on the matter?

I think the hat may be used to wear it backwards (or turn it around when things get heated) and then use it to amplify your headbutts.... maybe?

Not just the item and physical ability to deliver...but what is your delivery modality?
If you are stuck on a "punch-kick" modality...you are back to the same old skill set delivery and
    functional delivery challenges.

I've watched this video a couple of times since it was created, and it us a damned shame that it doesn't have more views.
