    This shell took me roughly a few months and is constructed entirely of lumber. The biggest time constraint is planning! Storage, material cost, accessibility and schematics are all easily overlooked so plan ahead the best you can or just solve it as you go like I did.
    Stay on top of my mini series where I go into greater depth on questions asked, provide links and I break down specific steps of the campershell build.

    I AM a carpenter by trade and I could come up with some critiques, but ill just say, its totally strong enough, the workmanship is great, its unique and it looks killer! What more could you want! Great job!

      When I build my first one, I will absolutely welcome critiques. That is how you learn. By listening to professionals in the trade.

      @Slippery Storm Why? what exactly can he or anyone say, this is a SUBJECTIVE thing, the guy built it and it functions as he designed it to.. If he was building it for you and you want to critique than by all means there are Literally thousands of ways to make these things the ONLY thing it needs to do is be safe not to come enough while going down the road.. If the guy asks for critique than by all means have at it.. but cmon "A reasonable person" really lol

    • @Raven4122
      @Raven4122 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TM-bd7nf professionals will tell you dont do it because you are taking work away from them there is ONE WAY to do ANYTHING, weather its build an engine a topper or house.. The RIGHT WAY and the thing that determines this is safety reliability.. once i build it I dont need someone saying "I would have done this or i would have done that.. I have been doing my own things for 40 plus yrs lol so i guess in not a reasonable person

      Critique it for my sake. I love the way it LOOKS but think it could be built better in HIND SIGHT. I'm planning on building one for the top of my utility trailer and this design looks great but I'm stuck on methodology

    You people whining about weight bother to listen to the young man when he said the topper was around 300 pounds? Most fiberglass toppers are close to 200. That truck will handle it just fine. Excellent job, Ayrton! Nice looking as well as a great place to spend some time in out in the woods.

    • @tomjustice7610
      @tomjustice7610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I was thinking about the weight. I was wondering how the wood frame would hold up from the vibration of driving. This build is perfect for my needs.

    Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! For a non-carpenter, you're a pretty good one! The ONLY THING that I would recommend is to add some drainage holes on top so H2O doesn't pool up & damage the wood. Great job

  • @kwqd54
    @kwqd54 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I generally like this build but it really does seem like a water trap, that is going to cause problems eventually. If nothing else, the trim pieces around the bottom could be rounded off, or angled, to shed water downward, and some drain holes added in the trim around the top to allow the water to drain down to the rounded/angled trim at the bottom. As it is water is just going to sit in several places and will eventually win in seeping in somewhere, no matter how well sealed the joints are. Especially true, if this is going to be used in the winter in freezing weather. It is a really great start, though. Kudos.

      Yup, water will definitely pool on top....
      He could have obtained the same appearance and had a slightly bowed roof and then epoxied it (and even fiberglassed it if he really wanted to go the extra mile) and there would be no water damage to it in ten years outside in a rain forest.....
      I love the look, similar to a project I had in mind...

    I have a 02 3/4 ton Dodge diesel long bed and I really want to do something like this. Right now I have a extra tall fiberglass canopy but it is made for the 1st gen bed which is a bit different sized than mine. Seal leaks between canopy and truck and I just can't get it to stop no matter the material or how tight my clamps. Next summer I build one similar to yours. Looks great.

    Brother, I love the build and it came out very nice! However, I have to tell ya… the overhang over the tailgate is a bit pointless in stopping thieves. Nice work! Only 300 lbs? Did you weight it? Seems heavier. I like the overall look and design. Insulated is so nice. Consider installing a heater that runs off the engine antifreeze like the ones in the rear of vans. Much safer and when you arrive it's preheated. Heat will retain most of the night with that insulation. I do this with my camper van.

    Very nice build, and we'll presented and explained during your video, measurements will vary from truck to truck depending on the make, model, and overall size of the bed itself, so don't sweat posting measurements - anybody capable of using a tape measure or even a "yard stick" will be able to figure out what they need and make their cuts accordingly besides if they have the tools to build this that should also mean they have a degree of ability to do so as well.
    Nice selection for the wood and the only thing different I would/might do is to rip the wood in half, to leave them at approximately 1/4" thick, and then seal BOTH sides for better moisture protection, same with the plywood, sealing it that is, but you can also reduce the weight by boring numerous large 3" holes which can reduce the weight of the plywood by 20% and more since as several people have mentioned th weight factor.
    One More thing, re the weight factor, a few 3/16" to 1/4" cuts along the bottom of the top rear 2 x 3 will help drain any water, etc., just remember to seal/protect those areas too.
    Thank you for sharing, and hopefully this may be on my list to build for a "winter" project, for my Silverado.

    a good looking cap in both design and build I know you used Silicone to seal but another good way would had been using Epoxy resin and a fiberglass cloth like they use in Wooden boat builds often called the West Sysystem because West Epoxy was what made that system popular originally these days many others have entered the Epoxy world and are less costly like Total Boat and some others the combination of the r Epoxy and the cloth not only makes a waterproof surface it also provides strength and some abrasion resistance as well similar to a fiberglass and resin mixture they use to make a fiberglass shell or boat

    Beautiful job, nice looking design. I was going to do this too until I calculated the max gross weight rating on my 1/2 ton truck. Bed payload is pretty minimal. Unfortunately weight is probably an issue, depending on the payload of the truck by the time you finish the inside bed, add gear etc, you may be overloaded.

    I am curious, 3 years later how did this work out? What would you have done differently if you could do it again? Did it remain waterproof? etc.. Nice work!

    the design should have eliminated the tailgate, and had full barn doors for easy access// also the roof has a potential resovoir - that you could use to collect raiin water if you had a hose drain for off grid boondocking

      Some great ideas, but I planned to tow a trailer at the same time as camping so that idea wouldn’t work for me

      I store it inside, and I’ve added weather stripping around the bottom edge. So far nothing has leaked for me while it’s on

    For not being a carpenter, you have done an excellent job, and given me some ideas. I'm planning to get an older, long-bed pickup, and may make my own top similar to yours. Only problem with this design is that it is very HEAVY. At one time I had an old truck with an aluminum shell, and by propping it up against the back fender, I could lift it up and on the bed by myself. Of course I was 34 then, now I'm twice that age. So I like the hydraulic lift idea.

    • @fathertime241
      @fathertime241  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I talk about the weight in my new video and show how I lift it in another video comping soon, not too bad. Best of luck on your build!

    Are u using 2x4 or 2x3 to save weight plus they should be strong enough....I plan to use 2x4 base plates then 2x3 or 2x2 since siding will add rigidity. Also plan to use rubber membrane under plates and use 1/2" bolts on side rails and a few 3/8" on front to ensure its rock solid and water tight. Lastly, roof plan to use a 1 piece thin gage ss that wraps around sides 1.5", secured with ss screws and rubber washers. Also add roof vent. Love your design and rear door. Not only to lock, but a nice cool rainy night be nice to have open yet stay dry. Will use t&g outside, styro insulation and 1/4" plywood inside. Plan to put both a bulk head from cab to bed and side bulk head for lp line for indoor heat and generator leads in summer ( will frame for small a/c ahead) Anyone have comments? This seems like a fun project!
