- Showing you the entire process start to finish of how I built my dream camper on my 2004 Tacoma TRD.
TH-cam taught me so much when I was building my camper, I wanted to give back by showing everyone exactly how I did it.

@@Ty-nc9ew initially it was the first edition of lloyds book as well as really loving the work of Jay Nelson who makes incredible campers. essentially seeing others do these amazing things and thinking. why not me? I could do that with enough focus and effort. and so I did.

I can't express how much I love this via text, but.... I LOVE IT!!! I'm heading overland/off grid for the next couple years and building EVERYTHING except a trailer frame and Costco 10x20 "carports" I'll be working under. I am sooooo stoked I found this vid!!!!

so in my experience I find if something terrifies you then your on the right path. when we are least comfortable we learn the most.
Philip will be lamenting once again that he had to sell his 2006 Tacoma to buy a family size truck to accommodate a partner and two boys. Awesome work Ian. Tremendous learning curve for you via TH-cam but a first rate product!!!
eveyone has a vehicle they swear they should of never sold. the good news is you can still go out and buy another 2006 tacoma! in fact i Just got a 1981 Toyota Hilux 2.2L Diesel so there is a chance another ridiculous build is possible.

In all my yeasrs of woodworking and building kayaks, canoes and tear drops this is one of the best designed and built camper shells I have seen. It looks well built especially using the strip style and stringer layouts used for building kayaks and canoes and yacht interiors. WELL DONE.

Love the simple interior with technical emphasis on the windows and doors. I have a similar setup in my 3rd gen 4Runner
awesome! I had a second Gen 4 Runner I built a rooftop sun canopy on that breaks down. like the sun beds at resorts, it was awesome. 3.0 V6 5Spd manual. incredible unit

Oh,so stressful? You have access to a freaking shop,tools, and lots of help! If that's the case, then everyone could build one!!
Love the insight. so valid. not like I spent months learning new skills and doing thing off camera over 3 times to get them right. but alas it all cause I had access to a space and tools anyone can purchase.

The only thing I would suggest Is that a front window driving on the freeway in the rain you are approaching hurricane force weather beating on far longer than any big money storm window system in Florida will ever take .
Hey not sure if you heard near the end there that the camper has been on the road for 2 years now, and that i used high tensile silicone to put them in place. So I think that its good to go as I done 120 in rain storms a number of time. but you are correct that if someone is not thinking things thru they could be in trouble... we on the other hand are fine.
Wow, for a man with no craftsmanship pedigree you have done a marvelous job. And you obviously have some awesome friends/mentors when it comes to tool usage and structural engineering! Kudos to all of you. (you might get each of them to sign a "build board" (about 8x10 inch plaque and then laminate it) and mount that somewhere inside as a thankyou/tribute to their help.)
it took a village but now i might go so far as to call myself a competent crafstman after this one. I will take that into consideration as I will be redoing the rear doors and interior

just so your aware this in itself caused some problems / more work.
it was curved slightly to match the truck... so I had to frame it in as a curve

Hard coated Plexiglass / acrylic or even better Polycarbonate / Lexan would have been a better choice for the windows, more expensive but with much higher scratch resistance. Also, the epoxy degrades from UV radiation and needs spar varnish for protection. This is the most beautiful truck camper that I have seen, much like the gorgeous cedar strip canoes and kayaks. A work of art! Thanks for the video.

that was a critical part of it as I wanted to be able to wheel a dirtbike into the cap, so the door had to be wide and as well tall enough to get handlebars under
