The best thing about Goodwood is being a fast track in the open, cars can be followed closely, so close that you can see the effort drivers have to put in steering these fast cars when driving on the limit. Spectacular! Love it!

I absolutely love how controlled drifts were so necessary in racing it shows the driver's ability and dare I say courage in the insane cars of the past...

I appreciate all these owners and drivers. We get a glimpse of what these priceless machines would have looked like when they were a dime a dozen on the racing circuits.

I'm thrilled to have "discovered" Goodwood because of the trio of Clarkson, Hammond, and May.
Utterly fantastic, thrilling, and historical all rolled into one. The Duke of Richmond certainly knows how to put on a great show!

Wonder what that Cortina would look like if a 30-year old Jim Clark were driving it.

It would probably not look that dramatic. Clark was known for a smooth driving style that was easy on the car while maximizing speed.

  • @davidfoster1762
    @davidfoster1762 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes he’d probably look relatively slow.
But would be very very fast.
My very favourite picture of Jim Clark is him at Goodwood at the start of the TT race in a Zagato Aston. He had qualified 6th or 7th, outgunned by Ferrari GTOs. It was an old style Le Mans start , ie cars lined by side by side, drivers on the other side of the road. Jim was in his car and away very quickly , opposite locking away in a full throttle but perfectly controlled way half a second in front of everybody in the first few seconds of the race. Sadly he crashed with John Surtees later in the race .
And yes I did see Clark 3 three wheel his Cortina . I’ve got tears in my eyes as I type this.

So, the person in the green Cortina, seemed to be driving as if they stole both the car and the petrol, had a hostage tied up behind the seats and was fleeing the police, had a bomb rigged to the gas pedal so they couldn't let go, had wind at their back the whole time, really needed to pee, was seriously home sick, and their SO just called and said they were waiting in bed.

Very fast & skillfully done - but even modern tyres wouldn't last for full race condition race laps, under those limits!

It’s was Andrew Jordan. The car was shared between him and David Dickinson. Race was a very sideways 45 minutes. Tyres were fine

    • @golic7123

Nice one mildsteven77 - Thank You
As a former Racer, Race & Championship winner, and former holder of 4-lap records for production based cars over 2-litres in the 90's - i doubt that those tyres would be 'fine' over a 5, 6, 7, 8 lap race, being used like that.
Then again, the best we had available to us then was Bridgestone SE-01's (& SE-02's) . . . . so, i may stand corrected, compared to modern products (of which I'm unqualified to comment upon)
Anyway . . . . . . I'm not wanting to argue, I'm just stating an observation, based on intimate, valid, personal experiences
      Cheers anyway !

Most shocking this is (in my opinion), new(ish) cars would out qualify these older classics, I happen to own 2 decent cars, an old Escort Mexico (ex rally car) and an AMG Merc....... completely different to drive, the Merc is fast (and I mean lose your licence fast if you don't watch what you're doing), the Escort, about 1/4 the bhp, 1/3 of the weight, zero creature comforts, and noisy....... but a riot to drive it like a looney
