- Hooray more infinite unit spam! At least we get some semblance of control this time
In this scenario, the Vietnamese rebels are holed up in a mountain fortress that is about to be encircled by the Ming besiegers. You must hold on to the fortress long enough to secure an escape route for the majority of the Vietnamese army. Just try to act quickly and don't be afraid to drop plenty of towers!

This one was in 1419, on the 2nd time the Lam Son rebellion had to seek refuge at mount Chi Linh. The surrounding was tight with nearly no escape and the Ming also made multiple assaults to the rebels' base. When the situation was too desperate, Le Loi asked all of his generals whether anyone would volunteer to be his stunt double, to lure the enemy out and let the rest of the army escape. Le Lai volunteered in this suicide mission, he said:" Your Majesty, I volunteered to change the robe, I only have 1 request, if we are able to take back the country, please don't forget me and my family. That's more than enough for me". Le Loi and everyone kneeled down and then made an oath:" Le Lai had volunteered to sacrifice himself for the sake of this uprising, we will remember his sacrifice forever. If we forget this, our palace will become a dilapidated house, this sword will be a piece of metal, the seal with be just a piece of copper." Le Lai later led 500 men and 2 elephants, charged through the enemy camp and shouted:" The Lord of Lam Son is right here". The Ming surrounded and later captured and executed him, but the rest of the army was saved. Years later, before passing away, Le Loi told everyone to remember that his day was 22nd, so you have to worship Le Lai one day earlier than mine, and then put it in the golden cabinet so that all Emperors must remember and honor his sacrifice. Since that day, we have a quote like the man down here said:" 21st Le Lai, 22nd Le Loi". He saved the fate of the Rebellion.
If you need historical record of this rebellion events, you can find it in "Bình Ngô Đại Cáo" or "Đại Minh Thực Lực". They are Vietnamese and Chinese records and views about this war of liberation or rebellion base on each side perspective but they all have general agreement on the events that happened. And the devs never read them or this campaign would be very very very different.

Got this at my second try on hard with this strategy: send your starting army right away to clean the way to the east camp (dont waste time and army trying to take the towers down on the way there, just eliminate blue army and pass through the towers) and let your starting army waiting just outside the east camp, at the same time you are doing this, build 2 town centers assap, 20~23 villagers in each resource, sell the stone in the market and use the gold to get the upgrades and to make elephants and cavaliers to send as reinforcements to your starting army waiting outside the east camp and once you have like 45~50 units there full upgraded destroy the east camp, use your starting army to protect the orange units making their way to east camp, meanwhile on your base once gold and stone are gone build 4 or 5 stables and archery ranges then set all your villagers to food and wood (should have like 30 or more in each) and start spamming hussars+imperial skirmisher like CRAZY, don't ever go below the maximum of 150 units, the key is, use your castles and towers to deal with everything that's not siege and use your hussars to snipe trebuchets and siege weapons then make them run straight back to castles while your imperial skirmishers covers them, the castles and green army should be able to deal with everything that aren't trebuchets and siege weapons, let the towers and castles kill the rest of the army, blue and light blue army will waste time tearing down walls and green buildings and if you do what I said correctly they shouldn't even touch your castles, and if they do, just sell resources to buy stone and send villagers to repair them

I am Frencjh, and when you said < French soldiers at the wall ! > I had a moment of hesitation. 'cause we really had some fighting with the Vietnamese, but waaay later, in the mid-XIXth century. ^^
Finally after 10 tries finallllllly!!!!!! Thanks for the tower’s strategy it took me couple of tries but the deed is done ✔️
There is a Vietnamese quote: 21st Le Lai, 22nd Le Loi. It about Le Lai decision and it's consequences to the fulture of Dai Viet
Thanks for showing how it's done! 😎 I couldn't do this one on moderate and i've been playing AoE since the first game in '97, and online multiplayer since 2010 or so!

Hardest Mission in the game
agree 100% I did the rest of the campaign easy on moderate, I can't for the life of me beat this map. What were they thinking?
@@mandiebox7945 i did not play this campaign. But in fact, this is the hardest time of Le Loi in his process. his best friend - Le Lai died in this battle.
@@bataivan3922 While I respect that and can appreciate that, I just wish they started with an extra 1000, food, wood and gold. It would still be a tough mission but I honestly think this map is the hardest in the entire game. So much so I've given up trying to complete it.

One thing that pisses me off about this mission is that the Vietnamese rebels that you have to escort will sometimes not only attack the enemy but their AI will occasionally just shut down after fighting is done, so they just sit there and do nothing.
'help' them with an onager, that will make them move one way or another.

Finally beat this on medium difficulty. You really can't waste any time growing your economy, then pumping out units, then upgrading units, then expanding to the east, then expanding your unit production, then putting up towers once you can maintain 150 population. I liked this mission. I probably wasted too much resources upgrading my arbalests, halbs, and skirms but there is only one Castle for Rattan archers.
this mission reminds me of one mission in Army men rts where you have to rescue villagers, really hard to play, limited resources and enemy units are just supper strong early on, but when you got the hang of it, it got much easier.

i went here coz I just got beaten by the Chinese
AOE 3 - Japanese Campaign: Siege of Fushimi Castle is literally the same... But a smaller map and only villagers have to escape.
Plus, you can get Gaia stealth ninjas, and a large amount of imprisoned Japanese troops.
If even the second scenario is like this, I dread the later scenarios. No matter what I do they are too fast for me to keep up, attacking from all directions at once.
The odd thing is the rest of the campaign is easy, it's just this for god forsaken level, I don't know what the devs were thinking with this one but it clearly isn't balanced right.
For extra challenge try doing this by defeating both the Ming Army’s. Instead of focusing on the main quest of taking Le Loi to the path East.
It was what I did and It was an interesting challenge and not easy but felt epic at the end !
I did. I couldn't make the objetive so i had to kill the mings. Boomed a lot and then added canon galleons.

Yes. It is possible to take out the Ming via the use of cannon galleons.

@@KaaAAABOOOOOM Super late, but there's a relatively safe spot to build a dock in the shallows south. The dock will be in range of a keep on the other side but you can train some elite cannon galleons to work your way up the river destroying towers and production buildings. You can then build another dock close to the south gate (though it'll likely be destroyed after a while) and repeat the process with more cannon galleons. The problem is doing this while not getting overrun at home. Once the tables turn a bit (ideally after you get rid of all the castles to prevent treb production) you can start taking the fight to cyan with elite battle elephant spam - up to that point you should be banking gold and spamming just light cav to deal with siege and only a few elephants at home for defense.

to be honest, I was hoping their siege workshop will have bombard cannoneers like the ones in Standard Campaign. I had a hard time dealing with those Chinese bombard towers because battering rams still get crushed like those battle elephants (event when upg or promoted to elite). I did this mission the hard way instead. fighting them while also fighting the clock before the chinese bring out their "bigger guns" (trebuchets) is also a pressure

I'm a long-time fan and finally bought game. as the first campaign, I tried out Le Loi's camapign to learn to use the Vietnamese. This fucking mission is too much for my mult-tasking skills and making me depressed :(
If it's any consolation, remember this is one of the hardest missions in one of the hardest campaigns.

Finally was able to do this, the trick is to really boom, had about 6 or 7 TCS. most of them out of the fortress. The reason for this is, hey will enter the fortress and they will kill most of your economy. And even like that, its still a pain in the ass.

I can't believe it, but I could destroy the Ming army. Thanks to the hints here in the comments I tried it by building docks and canon galleons. It's not easy, but you can manage it: Towers will either shoot the dock, which is no problem, if it is a "regular" guard tower. If it's a cannon guard tower, then I just repaired the dock with about 10 villagers very quickly and also let elephants attack the tower. It is also possible to distract the (regular) tower by placing an elephant next to the dock. With the cannon galleons you can destroy the towers, the castles and some production buildings. My elephants destroyed the rest of the bases. Cannon towers, which can't be reached by the galeons, can also be distracted: Just take Le Loi near the tower and dodge the cannon balls, while elephants destryo the tower. (Difficulty was medium). Funny how this is not intended by the devs (and of course doesn't make sense regarding the story), although they gave you the cannon galleons...
Remember that it is just the second map. Lol.
But the dev, i think that, never read the "real history" about Le Loi against Ming dynasty. Iirc, i learnt from school, Le Loi ( and his army ofcourse) were trao and surround by Ming army. Then Le Lai, volunteer become double stunt of Le Loi, lead a small army. He dead after that but Ming army think they killed Le Loi and retreated( because they think they won, there is no reason to keep going).
So Le Loi and the rest of army can retreat without any harm. It is not like what happen in this camp, Ming army charge like crazy to Le Loi! They thought that they killed Le Loi!

Things like this are always going to be an issue if you have to share a base with a friendly AI.

Edited: well, i've got it right the 3rd time, and quite easy too.
Manned the gates towers, adding few more.
Chose an enemy tower, built a tower in front of the river, put 4 archers in it, after that was destroyed, built a shipyard there, upgraded to elite cannon galleon and started to clean whatever it was within range in both sides of the river. Once castles are gone, oc trebs are not longer a nuisance.
I just kept 5-6 cavaliers ready at the gates in case a trebuchet appears.
So, mean while realized our tower has +1 range than every shooting enemy building, so easily cleaned eastwards, and put 4 full towers around the east wood camp, which is the point the enemy patrol will start, trying to get the escaping rebels.
The rest or west ming army can be swiped away with 30 archers, 25 elephants a couple of priest and onagres.
Im struggling so hard with this one...

I could only beat this by destroying both ming armies, you can make cannon galleons to destroy most of cyan and that takes the pressure off.
i try to make this, but i lost many time.
I beat this one in one Go on standard essentially what I did was I made multiple towers next to the green towers for extra protection and garrisoned some units in the towers for more fire power. They still managed to break through but by then we were already evacuating troops. And just needed to escape alive.

How do I get them to go East!?!? I’m stuck trying to escort them, but it’s not working!!!
I decided to mover far of walls and make so many farms and chop wood to sell and start to spam a lot of elephants to portect my castle.
Also if you build a tower behinh the castle the trebuchets and many units will go for it.
The second advice is:
To build 5 tower where army is gonna leave. This to protect them and make this eassier escape for them.
Someone told me you could actually build elite cannon galleons in this mission, so i tried it out.
Its impossible to push the east base without proper siege, but with the cannon galleons i leveled the towers and the castles, then i went over there with my army and destroyed their base.

For those having trouble with this watch the speedrun strat of changing diplomatic status to neutral and converting your Ally's elephants to get a beefy army. Rush the blue path quickly and the mission becomes easy.
I CANT DO THIS SHIT. i devide my army into 3 to protect both doors and try to break out of the fortress to stall the enemy but by the end i have like 5 trebuchets destroying my last castle i cant last that long.....how can i do this.
Try really booming, have about 6 or 7 TCs on resources outside the map, try to reach 120 vilager pop, then just focus on clearing the path and defending what remains of the fortress
I tried with 40 farms, 15 on wood and 20 on gold, and then spam elephants and archers try to keep the gate closest to your Vietnamese rebels (orange) intact so they dont distract them, and keep elephants near castle and charge when you see trebuchets mostly the trebs will be without protection because their army charged in so keep an eye on that, and block roads with buildings so they dont attack your economy

What's the point of creating missions like these anyway? Just to have people looking for guidance in order to pass them? The difficulty in this game's campaigns is so dumb, most missions are a cakewalk and some missions are only possible if you were an expert..
i mean a "Hard"-difficulty is designed to be hard. and yes i also hate this mission, especially that sometimes the rescued soldiers arent fully counted, but i dont think its that bad, looking at it objectively (especially on standard)
Does anybody has a save file which i can download right before the win (gold) i can't to this shitty ass campaign anymore... it is just to hard and i get worse and worse and worse everytime...
Do it at lower difficulty and keep the bronze/silver. This is the hardest campaign in the game and is supposed to be done as last. Play the other campaigns first. At first I too didn't manage to do it even at medium difficulty. Later, after getting better at the game, I managed to do it at hard and get every gold.
Kinda late but I just finished the mission and I do have a save file if you want it, limited time offer since savefiles tend to brake after updates

I understand the purpose of giving the AI extra resources so that the player can't cripple the AI's economy and ruin the scripting, but this spam is way too much. At least they should give us 3 super castles that outrange trebuchets if they are going to spam that much. Or maybe switch the spam to have rams and champions as the anti building part of the spam.
This mission is just terrible game design. Easily the worst and most annoying mission in the entire game, including all the expansions.
F**K this mission. Yea, ridiculously hard and I did it on silver. I went a diff route. I turtles n made safe the walls that were being attacked n fully upgraded, DONT DO THAT. Eventually they start throwing endless trebs at you with the units so having cavalry to run out n kill them isn't very effective. What made this difficult is once you clear the path, they often send groups of enemies along the path the escaping rebels take so you can't just clear it and leave it. Fortunately the rebels in my case anyway, followed a specific path so I just kept a decent size force nearby, also when they inevitability destroy gates, at the end I decided to block with wall of houses. Ironically they didn't seem to attack it at all, opting to go towards the others areas without gates. Also the trebs like to target the towers but never seemed interested in the castles, and once they got perimeter towers they became kinda aimless and would attack units n walls n random buildings. Garrison towers n castles. And save often, but don't overwrite, use them as checkpoints incase you need to go back a 5 minutes and so somthing different. Also, once the rebels started escaping the attack on the west side lessened and they began attacking more from the east side. Just F**k this mission.
did it on hard with the cannon galleon method. im pretty good at multi tasking and rts games but this mission is NOT fun and stressed me so bad. so sad that hard difficulty is equal with infinite unit spam and disabling some of your buildings and units (castles, towers, walls, trebs, rams). no this isnt called hard, this is just a lazy and bad design. its like getting your pikemans disabled vs french paladins and you are allowed to fight with mangonels and crossbowmans
Le Loi and Le Lai, well they were named like that, blame their parents not the game. Blame the game for making this champaign as aids as it can be.
Also elite cannon galleons are not disabled so, building a dock between the south bush and the wall makes you able to make 3-4 elite cannon galleons and destroying the shore defenses makes you able to kill his 1st castle, put another dock in the pond above, make 4 cannon galleons and destroy the 2nd castle and do the same with the 3rd castle. That way no more trebs makes the game easy, onagers destroy those rams. I also blocked gates with blacksmiths so le lai doesnt open the gate with some stupid units.
Why you replaying thease scenarios when you already complete them?
