For those struggling with this mission on Hard: I cleared all the Helot camps BEFORE entering the city. It's possible since they are not very well fortified and your heroes regenerate HP. It might take some more time and is cheesy (sometimes you need to bait few units out, kill them, wait for HP to regenerate and repeat), but it works - you basically enter the city with 8k+ food, wood and 5.5k gold which you can spend right away on production buildings + upgrades and kill 1-2 Athenians' camps before the 1st attack wave.
I finally won by using the heroes initially to destroy some small n easy camps before entering methone. You get to collect lots of sheep, 3-4 resource carts, 1 donkey and also ur army of 10. this way enemy starts weak. Just withraw heroes again n again, save game again n again, wait fr heroes to recharge life battery. it takes time but this is a tough scenario. fr me that was the only way. Get gold from oysters. The inside of walls run out of resources. I sneaked a few villagers out from back (north west) after clearing their path (send an army of 40 strong units first for this), got gold n stone from east in a helot camp. Then get the forage bushes, wood too. And select fort to research - fort generates gold. Make forts by buying stone. This seemed to be the only way to never run out of gold. Make little navy to destroy enemy camp in south. Last attack is generally strongest but it was nothing as I had plenty.
I cleared all the camps, and all their "factories" and still got rick rolled and destroyed on their 2nd push. Didn't even make it to the third. I think my game is broke. No less than 100 RAM should up at 4 spots, AFTER i destroy their RAM factories.
@@gengarpokemon7731 The 3rd Spartan scenario is harder but the castle in that one is so safe that it's hard to actually lose. While the losing condition here is more realistic that you can actually lose
@@gengarpokemon7731 How I watched this video 15 times. Completely cheese and wiped the camps before I even enetered the city. Literally everything was done. Started with like 8K of all rez. Still got wiped with ease. Hundreds of rams and infantry that won't die. I don't even think it's possible on Hard.
In 431 BC, Sparta declared war on Athens, marking the beginning of the Peloponnesian War, a series of conflicts between the two city-states that lasted until 404 BC

Brasidas (Greek: Βρασίδας, died 422 BC) was the most distinguished Spartan officer during the first decade of the Peloponnesian War. He died during the Second Battle of Amphipolis while winning one of his most spectacular victories.
This took me a few tries. You can't really drag this out, as you'll struggle with gold and I found it hard to get to the camps in time. Then I went mangonels and those solve all of your problems. You can hold all gates with them, while being very cost effective and then you can mass infantry behind and kill the camps. Still, one frustration I have, is the Athenian camp is way too close to your walls. One moment when you aren't paying attention and your units happily run into the enemy camp and die.
that was a challenge, i relied on mangonels to hold the gates as long as possible. The final onslaught is definetly more of a challenge then Jadwiga 4, gold is an issue
A few Mangonel + archers & towers/castle per gate is enough to hold the gate while prepare 1 group of melee units to go out to attack sapper tunnel. Main target is ram as it take down gate fastest, then melee units. For enemy mangonel, scorpion and archer, you can send units out and back to lure enemy into ranged units/tower.
You can cheese this mission pretty easily by building a bunch of forts (castles) and researching Peloponnesian League, which causes forts to generate gold. By the end of this mission I had an arc of 6 forts and more gold than I could spend. For an added bonus, you can put some archers in the forts to make defense even easier, just need a small group of infantry nearby to snipe rams.
If you want to tryhard this mission: 1. Get 2 helot camps before going to the city 2. Econ boom 3. Build tons of onagers, like 6 for each entrance 4. 3m before night arrives, build tons of hoplites or hippeus 5. Rush everything with your army. In 2 day-night cycles you should win Like i said, thats the tryhard way to win in hard xD
In this scenario, we begin the Spartan and full-blown Peloponnesian War section of the campaign with the defense of the city of Methone by the Spartans, led by Brasidas and Lysander
The big Λ in their shields , comes from the legendary king Λακεδαιμων (Lacedaemon) son of Zeus. According to the myth, Sparta was the name of his wife and that's how the city of Sparta took it's name.
No idea how anyone is beating this. I get annihilated on hard. I even cheese it by killing ALL camps and the buildings BEFORE i entered they city started with 8k of all rez and still get wiped by the 2nd attack. This isn't fun at all and I almost my job because I was trying to beat this one for 24 hours straight with no sleep.
Once you clear the resource camps before reaching city it becomes easy mode. I immediately built 2 castles at each gate and put archers in them. At that point it is almost on auto.
Took me a couple of tries but I took out one of the helot camp with my starting army, then boomed, and focused on stone to place a defensive castle in front of each gate, and then filled these castles with archers. The boats were by far the most annoying so I took them out first.
the goats in this whole campaign are weird. they don't get attacked or converted by the enemy. so in this campaign aswell as in the first athenian one, you can literally just send them straight to their target from where ever lol they will essentially scout on the way for free, too. edit: only grey can convert them lol
Nah, something is wrong with my game. I'm getting at least 4 times the enemy units. Literally DOZENS of rams. This is so bad I want to uninstall this game.
THIS! IS! ...a pretty hard level to start the Spartan campaign off on.

Wow, you just made me beat hard difficulty on this level. Mad respect for sharing this with us.
I was thinking of doing the same. Very difficult level. Still pending.
that was brilliant. even a slowpoke like me managed to win on hard this way.

This is the hardest mission in entire campaign
The true finale of the grand campaign
on first play through yes but after that no lol
Nope not at all.....If you complete the objectives quickly during the retreats. Just dont drag this mission.

Pretty challenging scenario. Fitting for how you're playing the Spartans and how they are generally depicted.

They added an unconvertable goat to the game. It's in the scenario editor.
