  • Lumiere perform "The West's Awake" with Damien Dempsey in The National Concert Hall. It was such a special evening, it was the week that Ronnie Drew passed away and John Sheehan and Barney McKenna performed at the gig also, it was Magic!

      Do not apologize for it was the Gaelic system that allowed them to be conquered although it was wrong what we suffered unfortunately the strong unit always took advantage of the weak divided.

      No need now Sir, it's all done and dusted, like the Germans don't need to apologize for WW ll/Holocaust, we wish it could have been different of course...! But fate/destiny and the powers that be, at the time ordained a different path for us...we don't harbor hate and animosity, all the best!

    • @snipper1ie

      There are many, many songs. Some should be sung by women, some by men, some by either. The Spinning Wheel song. Belongs to women, because a man, could never do it justice and it would sound silly coming from the lips of a man. This, in my opinion, is a song to be sung by a man. I am sixty years old now and I have yet to hear a man tell the tale of young Eileen and this is the first time I’ve heard a woman sing this. It can be done, I can knit and a woman can do carpentry, but there are just some songs that sound better coming from the lips of a woman and some sound better coming from a man.

    • @Lee-nh5bb
      @Lee-nh5bb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@snipper1ie Understand what your saying, BUT, what if the singer WANTS to sing the song, and sings it so well?
      Please, we need less division in the world.
      Can't we all just be human first, and gender second, and if she wants to sing a song that's traditionally sung by a man, and vice versa, let's just go with it.
      There's nothing but praise for the ladies in the comments. If it's a song about some of Ireland's history, that sounds like a national thing, which involves ALL the people, not just 50% . 😤
      Now I must go and calm down; will listen to some Dave Allen, the voice of sanity . 🤭 ✌️
      G'day to beautiful Irish men and women everywhere!

    • @snipper1ie
      @snipper1ie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lee-nh5bb A body can sing what they want, when they want. Best of order, one and all. I did not say that women should not sing this song. They can if they want. It is just that a womans' voice, just doesn't have that crescendo at the 'awake, let England quake' bit. Likewise, a man can't really do justice to 'merrily whirring, spins the wheel'. You are only the second Leonie I have encountered in my life. The other being my cousin. I see you have the video of Margaret Gallagher. Each year a few friends and I go for the Barber's Birthday Perambulation on my birthday. Last year I had intended that we would visit Margaret, alas that wasn't to be, nor will it happen this year. I hope we will get to visit with her next year.
