I have loved Allison's singing for many years. This song is the ultimate testament to how amazing she is as a vocalist and interpreter of music. You can feel the years of hardship she has endured since she was a young girl coming through in her interpretation of this classic Irish ballad. I have listened to every version of this song that I can find and I cannot find one that even comes close to her performance. I will forever be in awe of her immense talent.
The only thing that could have improved this rendition would be cinematic costuming and make up to present her as having her "day's numbered." She is in full throated vitality, strength, beauty and youth here. Tamper with that dissonance for the illusion.
I will never understand why this lady did not achieve greater fame. She beats any female country singer hands down. Her album/DVD "Show" are not to be missed.

We visited Carrickfergus in 2022. In the Boneybefore neighborhood we were welcomed by a wonderful host at the Andrew Jackson cottage museum (and U.S. Rangers Museum). Not fond of Jackson's legacy, but his mother was one of six sisters, another of whom was my sixth great grandmother, Sarah Hutchinson, married to Samuel Leslie. All we know about their Irish origins is that they were married in Antrim and sailed in the mid 18th century from Carrickfergus to Pennsylvania (and moved to the Carolinas.)

Ballygrant and Kilmeny are actually located on the inner Hebrides island of Islay, part of Scotland. For some reason the writer of the songs lyrics changed Kilmeny to Kilkenny. Kilmeny does have a stone quarry that is mined for black stones, especially for gravestones.

I know I must go back there one day but will it destroy a beautiful memory, the people, the crack and beauty I left behind 🥰 I was 18 remember I was young and my whole life ahead and settling down was an option for a free traveling man / boy. Beautiful rendition! Carrickfergus, the city where it is rumored was the starting place of my Ross Clan before crossing the Atlantic, settling in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania about 1750.
