I saw him walking towards me in a service station on the motorway to Galway from Dublin, I put my hand out and said hello Joe and he shook it firmly and smiled and said hello back, as he walked away he stopped and turned and said " I'm sorry but should I know you" I replied " no Joe it's just me who knows you" he put his hand up to acknowledge what I had said and smiled again. My kids who were with me asked who that was and I just said "probably the greatest Captain Galway has ever had. A true gent

As a mayo man I remember well that speach, the hair stood on my neck with pride. And I ensured my children(unborn at that stage,) attended gealscoil and love our language.

I was 12 when this happened. Will never forget the feeling. I'm not from Galway or a hurler. But this is one of the cultural memories of 20th century Ireland. Watching it now still gives me goosebumps.

I have shown this to people who don't understand a word of Irish and every one of them can still appreciate the greatness of it.

There was an echo of this presentation at the late Joe McDonagh's funeral 3 years ago when his son Eoin finished his eulogy for this father with the hope that when Joe landed at the gates of heaven God had welcomed him in with the words of Michael O'Hehir "Well done, Joe McDonagh"

easily the greatest speech of all time. the use of the gaelige and the paisiún ó chroí, is the reason it'll go down in eternity and is still talked about today.

As a Cork Man with Kerry blood in my veins I applaud Galway and Joe Connolly for making the best victory acceptance speech of the McCarthy
Cup at Croke Park on All Ireland Final Day. Such passion agus gach focal as Gaeilge, and the rendition by Joe McDonagh RIP, of the West Awake
    was beautiful.

I remember it well... I thought he was going to burst out in English after a few words like they always do, but no, he kept going...my mother understood every word, as she's Gaeltacht to the core...I understood the bit about people abroad, who were probably crying now...A rousing speech, probably the greatest ever...In my opinion...

Nothing make me laugh more in this video than Bishop Eamon Casey singing away in the background, butter wouldn't melt in his mouth!

Oh but John S let’s not forget Bishop Eamon Casey was a good Man, Priest and Bishop Who did a huge amount of good in His Life time.
I will always remember Bishop Eamon Casey with enormous respect, and I Pray that Heaven is His reward. Rest In Peace.

Let those without sin be the first to cast a stone.
I don’t condone anything he did but he was apart of the general hypocrisy that was of that time.
When the English left the country fell into the hands of the politicians and the clergy and both rules with an iron fist
We Irish were docile and used to be told what to do.
You also might have areas in your life that you could have done better. I know I have.
All he did was father a child, he didn’t pray on innocents like others.
Life is long and we are all in it to learn our lessons.
      Empathy is a great strength.
I look at this video and see only the wonderful speech and singing on what was a remarkable occasion.
You have to be from one of these counties that make the breakthrough to realise what it means.
Think Mayo football or Waterford hurlers if they ever imagine to win.
Look at and for the beautiful and eventually that is all you will see.

Does anyone speak Irish better than Joe and does anyone sing the West awake better than Joe. 40 years on they still make the hairs stand. The best of Ireland and Irish people. Emotional.

I have a vague memory of my mother,a native of Milltown Co.Galway in tears at this.Must be the greatest acceptance speech of all time and I'm so glad I understand 90% or more of it.Especially the part about Galwegians all over the world and those who could not be there on the day.Goosebumps.

A leithéad d'óráid! Lad an-óg a bhíos ag an am ach is chuimhne liom go géar m'athair ag caint faoi le blianta ina dhiadh san. As Chorcaigh muid, ach is as Ros Comáin dom mháithair, ach bhí sí an-bhródúil nuair a chanadar 'The West's Awake.' B'fhéidír gurb é sin is cóngaraí don chorann a n-éireóidh le mhuintir Ros Comáin bocht😅Ar aon chumadh, ní dhéanfadh mise dearmad ar an óráid seo go deo, ná mo pháistí ach oiread, agus mé ag cleachtadh agus ag múineadh Gaeilge leo. Na Gael abú!
