I have endless respect for the struggles of Irish Republicans who fought for independence just as the Spanish and Catalan people fought for freedom from Fascism. This is an incredible song so rich and full of raw history.
As long as I know, Catalan people are Spanish people too. Sadly for the Republic's fate, Catalonia fought its own Civil War between fascists, republicans and left-revolutionaries until 1937... And Barcelona didn't try to resist as Madrid did for three years, even with the european conflict so near which, as president Negrín said, will force France and the UK to join the fight in Spain. Anyway, all our gratitude to the people who came from all over the world just to help and fight against fascism on this lost nook. Maybe one of the greatest solidarity fact, it will never be a defeact while some of us will still be remembering them.
The Irish know what it’s like to be underdogs - but they have never given up their fight for freedom, their fight against tyranny - from Spain to the US, the Irish fight fascism wherever they may be. Viva la República, Up the Republic!

Greetings from ireland,
In Tyrone we remember Charlie Donnelly, his comrades in the Brigades, the boys of Óglaigh na hÉireann and the women of Cumann na mBán with pride 🇮🇪
I salute my fallen comrades

The day will come, Saor Alba.
If not in 5 or 10 years, eventually, even if it takes 100 years. We will be free again to rule our own affairs without interference from another countries majority voter base and establishment.
I Remember about 20year ago in the Toolbooth bar, Glasgow a man named Gerry Mcgregor was singing this song. And randomly a Spanish family walked in (tourists obviously) and I watched them as they absorbed what we where all singing. It was a beautiful moment and a big surprise for them!
Big Gerry was some chanter. Sorely missed 🏴🇮🇪
I am an English Republican and this song always moves me. When these brave heroes made their way to Spain they did not do it on a cheap Ryanair flight. It took an enormous amount of courage and physical effort to get there in the first place. Then to fight not for a country but for an ideal against the evil of fascism
Viva la Quinta brigada. Nunca Os Olvidamos. NO PASARAN
Magníficas palabras, lucharon por la libertad, en su más amplio sentido, contra la reacción, el nacionalismo y el fascismo.
Why the Russian flag in dp?

There is a whole album about this episode of Irish history, called San Patricio by The Chieftains. A mix of traditional Irish and Mexican music about the Irish who fought alongside Mexicans during the US/Mexican war. It's a great piece of music too!
There was 30.000 man in the international brigade, fighting side by side with the Spanish people,i always remember them😢

@@donnchadhm14 The International Brigades during the Spanish Civil war where working with and under control of the NKVD , a brutal group who where basicly murdering people . So this song is basicly supporting a group of thugs that went into Spain and where acting in conjunction with the Communist Party of Spain to further Communist influence in the world . Geeez read a book people
I can't even imagine how hard it must be to go to war to defend your country, knowing that you will probably die. But even less I can imagine how someone can go to fight and die for another country that is not theirs. Glory and eternal thanks to those Irish who fought and died for Spain and democracy
They fought for an ideal. They had noble spirits.
They were our people.
They came from all over the world not just Ireland and they fought for international freedom and democracy everywhere

Those brave young Irish men fighting for an ideal with their Spanish brothers!
I have endless respect for the struggles of Irish Republicans who fought for independence just as the Spanish and Catalan people fought for freedom from Fascism. This is an incredible song so rich and full of raw history.
with the help of the irish
what it doesnt say is how much of a mess the republicans were in due ro the NKVD interferance.

Per capita Scotland contributed most to the international brigades.
Viva la República, Up the Republic!
thanks bro. god bless
Absolutely love this song...im a British citizen living in Ireland...a proud and beautiful country and christy Moore embodies Irish pride and patriotism and all that should make Irish people proud !
James Ryle Plenty of Brits fought in Spain they passed thru my Grandmother’s house for a meal then were taken to the Cross Channel ferries in Southampton
Edward Reed Lots of brave idealistic British men fought for the Spanish republic, hope they are never forgotten. Be very proud of them, pity men of that stature are few and far between today.I salute them and my people who went.
@@jimhealy8790 .... I'll always remember my Grandfather (who fought in N. Africa and Italy) teaching me the phrase 'no pasaran' when i was a kid. As a Scot that now lives in Dublin, this song speaks to both the love of my adopted country and the men who fought the fascists, more than i can say.
Really?

I’m currently off my nut in Madrid right now on the green line. Seen Christy around 2021. I think it might’ be the best performance I witnessed. Privileged and thankful. In the current political agenda this speaks volumes

Yes, David, as a US expatriate residing in Spain I can say that tears come to my eyes as I listen to this song and think about the 3000 young Americans who came to Spain in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion to fight for the Republic
God bless them, they came over and when they went back home they were persecuted by the FBI.
I cry everytime I listen to this
It is a lovely and very moving song.
I have to say I also cry and I play this song often because it is so important to remember the men and women who fought the Facists. How brave were they to travel to Spain and take up arms against the criminal Franco.
As my grandparents fought, suffered and died defending the people's right to rule themselves and the Spanish Republic, tears of emotion and thankfulness come to my eyes when I think of all the brave men and women who came to Spain and helped in the fight against fascism.
Raul, so many came from an intitally ideological viewpoint. I know in Spain their attitude changed and for me this is the most important. People like Martha Gellhorn and Milton Wolff. Two of my heroes
