It's impressive how powerful the device is for the size, I'm so used to seeing this kind of power in larger devices. Also, after RGB30, I'm a huge fan of 1:1 screens, such a great screen for retro gaming.
Of all the devices to get your off the cuff genuine reaction, you couldn't have picked a better one! This device is so weird and its so nice to see your initial reaction to all the odd stuff going on. I have been super excited about this thing because it seems to be such a nice mix of retro feel and modern comforts.
with all the retro handhelds that you have reviewed, can you please make a video about your definition/design of a "perfect retro handheld"? showcasing all the features you personally like and you consider optimum.. Im really curious to be honest. I started my retrogame journey beacause of your channel. big respect for you, Russ. Thank you a lot!
This is going to be my first retro handheld purchase since the retroid pocket 2, I’m really excited. But I’ve been DYING to get an Odin 2 pro for my little pc games handheld, not because of your comment I’m wondering if I need both? But I want both.
I've been waiting for your impressions on this one! Thank you! I'm excited for the next one! This seems to be like the device that will suit my needs. Thank you for all your work!
Okay, I think this is the first criticism I'll ever voice here. ;) I clearly remember you criticising Anbernic for having the left thumbstick at the bottom for devices that can do some GC and PS2, and being happy about it once they changed that, and here you'd prefer it the other way 'round. I guess it all depends on what platforms people will use the device for, but Anbernic's thinking matching your older wishes seems correct to me.
The reasoning is that the screen is killer for retro games, and its a higher build quality than the rgb30. So this could have been an alternative higher quality rgb30 (albeit not that pocketable), but swapping the d pad positioning to be below makes it less of a retro handheld
@@M_CFV All of these devices are meant for retro games primarily, it just depends on which generation the devices are meant for primarily. This device is called "The Cube" and it is marketed as playing up to GameCube games.
He is not a 'reviewer' from a true reviewer sense but rather he is a marketer in disguise of these emulating devices. His main goals is to introduce and market many devices as possible and point out all the goods and bads but he never have a favorite or a standout because his job is to flourish the market with everything and indicating every devices has its pros for some people and cons for others. I am not a fan of this kind of review style. To me, you gotta be able to firmly state your opinion on what device is superior over others and create some drama. I sont need someone to read off a catalogie. That is boring.
@@etvowEven though I mostly disagree with you, your feelings are still yours and valid. However, saying he doesn’t have a favorite is just wrong because he’s outright stated many times that the Ayn Odin 2 is his go-to since he got it.

This is my favorite video from you in a long long time. This feels real and less manufactured. Love it and hope to see more like this from you. The cube looks awesome and I want one but I just received my 35xxsp yesterday. I dunno if my wife will let me buy another one so soon. 😖
i have the RG35XX PLUS and i wanted to buy the SP but I think its not worth it as its the same as the one I have now but this model looks awesome, and we can play ps2 and GameCube which is awesome and good screen
I'm gonna be honest, I like the simple squared off look of the rg30. I just wanted better build/material quality and a bit more power for that absolutely gorgeous 1:1 screen. Still interesting, though, and doesn't necessarily look bad.
The url is correct. They are the same ones that ANBERNIC posted. They're just not active, yet. I bet it's gonna happen just a few days before release (pre-order).
Your videos go really in depth, which is nice, but can get long and sometimes daunting to watch. I can tell this was a much more casual video, and I really liked it! The casual style makes it easier to listen to, with it having much less information density. I enjoy your videos but often times they put me to sleep. This one felt more like a conversation and as a viewer this was very engaging. Thanks!
That's cuz the Odin 2 mini is a downgrade in basically every way besides some of the features of the panel lol. As an Odin 2 owner, the mini isn't remotely appealing, especially for more money
@@decegrease it's the same for other smaller devices. Iphone 15 gets less battery than the 15 Plus, Galaxy 24 gets less battery than Galaxy 24 Plus, both are harder to type on, coz the buttons are smaller, both are worse for media consumption. For many people a smaller screen is a downgrade. It's an alternative for those, who didn't get the Odin 2, because they wanted something smaller. And this is something smaller with the same power and arguably a better screen. Most small devices have tradeoffs we are willing or not willing to make, compared to the larger ones.
@@decegrease pocketability makes it an entirely different market. If i was going to buy one i would buy the mini all day, as a non odin 2 owner. Hi Russ - I thought these 2 videos, the Odin Mini and RG Cube, are up to the quality we expect from you, despite the time constraint you were under to publish them. They’re still great, with enough of your input to help me form an initial opinion and I’m guessing most viewers will still appreciate them! Maybe “Quick First Impressions”? 😂
I was so tempted to get the Powkiddy RGB30 for the retro gaming and trying out Pico8. I held out for an SP clone. Then the SP came out and its affordable but then they announces the RG Cube, and so im holding out once again! Id get them all if i could but i really want the cube for Gamecube/PS2 feel. That Dpad is icing on tge cake
Can you use the touch screen for DS games? I only see people playing Mario or Pokemon on DS emulators, there's so many other gems, what if I want to play Trauma Center under the knife or something?
I love this form factor. It reminds me a lot to the original GP32, Gizmondo and the early 00s handhelds that I always wanted. And those red accents are amazing, I got an Ayaneo Pocket Air just for the looks with the red color scheme.
Im about to try out 4:3 patches for some games for the rgb30, then ill try and stretch it to 5:4 or 6:5 to make it fill up more space without much distortion
The dpad reminds me of ASCII FT Fight Pads that were sold for the DreamCast. That “dpad on a floating island” look was actually really good for fighting games
Unlike the ROG Ally, it’s just the exhaust for a fan that really isn’t needed most of the time. It *thankfully* isn’t the heatsink for a goddamn X86 device being physically on top of and in direct contact with the SD reader. We’ll have to wait and see if there is any problems, but it should be much less of a problem than what ROG did.
@@jamesyu5212 What caused the failures then? Having a heat exhaust next to something prone to heat stress probably isn't a good idea, regardless of what ASUS tells you the problem was.
This is clearly to compete with the rgb30 so i dont know why youre gonna bring up 4:3, those are still going to be made. 4:3 games in 5:4 also look fantastic on 1:1 screens like these, and of course s/nes games in 8:7 look great too
@@M_CFV not sure why you seem to be upset at MY own opinion. If you like it, cool, get it. By your words, if this is competing directly at the RGB30, then the dpad would be up top as well, so my point still stands.
Still excited after seeing this. I'm glad you got this color since that's the one I was leaning towards. Looks a lot better in the video than it does in their promotional pictures to me.
Ahhh! It's so cute! In past months, I've gone from a watching enthusiast to a collector of these little machines. I don't think I'll be able to resist this little guy. I'm finding I like Anbernic the most...I don't know what it is, but something about their feel and look in my hands seduces me into an "I'm the brand you like the most, aren't I?" kind of thing... ...well, and then there's the Miyoo Mini+... 🤣
I fully agree with Anbernic that the analog stick goes on top for these more powerful handhelds. There are plenty of choices up through RK3566 and even T610 devices for 'more retro' gaming enthusiasts/occasions. These GameCube, Wii and PS2 capable devices should not be optimized for SNES. And it goes without saying that the screen should not be optimized for GB and Pico8. Vertical shooters and DS are MUCH better in Tate mode on a proper 16:9 device. So this is a niche design for collectors IMHO. But I do like the height of the device for ergonomic reasons.
After watching this hands on I'm convinced that this is the best colorway from all the 4 choices and that the RGB accents actually make it quite futuristic.
I think ergonomics definitely deserve more attention. For example, I love my Miyoo Mini+, but I can't play it for more than 45-60 minutes because the ergo is so bad. It cramps my hands, and as far as I'm concerned, they shouldn't have even included the L2/R2 buttons. This device looks comfy for longer play.
The shape of the cube alone - even if it looks like a fisher price toy - has had my attention since announcement. Looks like a lot more of a fun device than others that have come out. Glad to see it's comfortable.
Man, I saw the Anbernic trailer for this device and thought it looked amazing. Then everyone started bashing it for no apparent reason. After your video I feel quite sure it'll be an amazing device for everything up to Wii emulation and I can't wait for your full review. Hopefully sooner than later, cause I want to take this on my vacation 😅😉
Thanks Russ, another great video! Please, watch the Anbernic promo videos to see the awesome 3DS bezels they've installed by default. I'm expecting to see some of that in the final review! Also, Anbernic didn't invent that design. It was copied from the ZPG A1 Unicorn.
Been tossing around the idea of getting the RP4Pro as my first mobile emulation device but this is giving me pause, since it's so Gamecube-friendly. The analog stick being above the d-pad is actually huge for me since I mainly want to play 3D games. Looking forward to the full deep dive. Enjoy your travel!

black one looks good. Your like me. I have a good few handhelds and love them all
It's impressive how powerful the device is for the size, I'm so used to seeing this kind of power in larger devices. Also, after RGB30, I'm a huge fan of 1:1 screens, such a great screen for retro gaming.
Love watching your reviews and can't wait for your final review, miss the old background though
Of all the devices to get your off the cuff genuine reaction, you couldn't have picked a better one! This device is so weird and its so nice to see your initial reaction to all the odd stuff going on. I have been super excited about this thing because it seems to be such a nice mix of retro feel and modern comforts.
This guy is the Guru of retro gaming hands down
with all the retro handhelds that you have reviewed, can you please make a video about your definition/design of a "perfect retro handheld"? showcasing all the features you personally like and you consider optimum.. Im really curious to be honest. I started my retrogame journey beacause of your channel. big respect for you, Russ. Thank you a lot!
This is my handheld of the year, even over the Odin2 Mini. I can't wait to get one of these! 💚
do u think GBA games will play good on this device? like screen
The face you make when “bumpin” retro device speakers is priceless bro 😂
I really enjoyed this style of video, felt very laid back like we were all experiencing the device for the first time together. Great job!
@@etvow Okay, buddy.
@@etvowEven though I mostly disagree with you, your feelings are still yours and valid. However, saying he doesn’t have a favorite is just wrong because he’s outright stated many times that the Ayn Odin 2 is his go-to since he got it.
I was ready for the cube to have some big problem, but im glad it looks solid so far. Something about it just makes it look like a fun handheld to play to me
Always nice to see horizon Chase being tested on your videos because I worked for Aquiris, I didn't work on that project but it still feels good.
This is my favorite video from you in a long long time. This feels real and less manufactured. Love it and hope to see more like this from you. The cube looks awesome and I want one but I just received my 35xxsp yesterday. I dunno if my wife will let me buy another one so soon. 😖
i have the RG35XX PLUS and i wanted to buy the SP but I think its not worth it as its the same as the one I have now
but this model looks awesome, and we can play ps2 and GameCube which is awesome and good screen
I'm gonna be honest, I like the simple squared off look of the rg30. I just wanted better build/material quality and a bit more power for that absolutely gorgeous 1:1 screen. Still interesting, though, and doesn't necessarily look bad.
And a Touch Screen for 2DS and 3DS games!
Thanks for the early impressions, Russ! I'm even more excited for the Cub now. Have a safe and fun trip!
Getting a 404 on the Anbernic link you posted in the description
The url is correct. They are the same ones that ANBERNIC posted. They're just not active, yet. I bet it's gonna happen just a few days before release (pre-order).
Love all the hard work you put in all your videos. Have a great and safe trip!
Thanks!
Anbernic's been killing it lately. The recent lineup looks amazing :))
Compared to the Odin 2 mini Russ seemed so much happier with this device, more excited during the video as a whole.
Good to see that.
@@waldamy well yeah... coming from someone with an S24 Ultra, I'm not interested in an Odin 2 mini
@@decegrease that's the thing.
Coming from someone with Zenfone 9, I'm rather interested in Odin 2 Mini.
@@decegrease pocketability makes it an entirely different market. If i was going to buy one i would buy the mini all day, as a non odin 2 owner. Who cares about an s24 and a shitty backbone attachment or razer kishi when you can have real buttons. I feel like you just arent understanding the different target markets in the retro gaming space
Just want to note that I appreciate so much that your TH-cam titles always clearly start with the model that you're reviewing before having a relevant subtitle; not the clickbaity uninformative trash that TH-cam algorithms have more or less made lots of creators switch to.
Love all your content. ♥
I've been waiting for this!
I don't want to put any pressure on you, especially if you are on vacation right now, but I kind of want this thing! Their little commercial sold me so well! The only way I won't buy it is if you totally trash it.🥺😆
your son is gonna be like :
I gotta steal this.
Trying not to be a klepto must be really hard with a dad like this
Hi Russ - I thought these 2 videos, the Odin Mini and RG Cube, are up to the quality we expect from you, despite the time constraint you were under to publish them. They’re still great, with enough of your input to help me form an initial opinion and I’m guessing most viewers will still appreciate them! Maybe “Quick First Impressions”? 😂
looks at the thumbnail
me: awwww who's this little guy, he soooo adorable
I was so tempted to get the Powkiddy RGB30 for the retro gaming and trying out Pico8. I held out for an SP clone.
Then the SP came out and its affordable but then they announces the RG Cube, and so im holding out once again!
Id get them all if i could but i really want the cube for Gamecube/PS2 feel. That Dpad is icing on tge cake
Can you use the touch screen for DS games? I only see people playing Mario or Pokemon on DS emulators, there's so many other gems, what if I want to play Trauma Center under the knife or something?
You can
To small for ds games, 6 or 7 inch would be perfect.
I love this form factor. It reminds me a lot to the original GP32, Gizmondo and the early 00s handhelds that I always wanted. And those red accents are amazing, I got an Ayaneo Pocket Air just for the looks with the red color scheme.
Omg the Gizmondo!
So many "that's what she said" moments in this video. Awesome 1st impression vid
"This thing, I thought, was gonna be a big flop. But now that I have it in my hands, I'm excited."
I am loving these first "RUSH HOUR" first impression reviews
Im curious to know how psp games look on this. Cant wait for the full review
not good.. psp looks better on 16:9
Im about to try out 4:3 patches for some games for the rgb30, then ill try and stretch it to 5:4 or 6:5 to make it fill up more space without much distortion
The dpad reminds me of ASCII FT Fight Pads that were sold for the DreamCast. That “dpad on a floating island” look was actually really good for fighting games
That SD card right under the heat exhaust...
You do know that Rog ally's SD card flaw has nothing to do with the heat exhaust being directly above the SD card slot right?
Unlike the ROG Ally, it’s just the exhaust for a fan that really isn’t needed most of the time. It *thankfully* isn’t the heatsink for a goddamn X86 device being physically on top of and in direct contact with the SD reader. We’ll have to wait and see if there is any problems, but it should be much less of a problem than what ROG did.
@@jamesyu5212 calm down there ASUS employee
@@M_CFV I work for a hotel company and I don't even own an ROG Ally. Stop trying so hard.
@@jamesyu5212 What caused the failures then? Having a heat exhaust next to something prone to heat stress probably isn't a good idea, regardless of what ASUS tells you the problem was.
Another Anbernic device I'm gonna need to get. At this point, it's feeling more like a subscription service that gives a free handheld every month
Lost me at dpad not being up top. Why can’t these companies just make a regular 4” 4:3 retro centric handheld
If it plays PS3 games I'm in.
Even the steam deck could hardly play ps3 lol
@@nauikun hahahah yeah. That's why I'll be "in" when they finally invent this and it's affordable xD maybe in 2050, I dunno hahaha
They were on acid when they decided the colors. I'm avoiding it just for that
I fully agree with Anbernic that the analog stick goes on top for these more powerful handhelds.
I am so getting this! Thanks for making these videos for us b4 your trip!
This as everything else was amazing. Great informative video and I am hyped to see the next video about those two devices during your trip.
Liking the new setup and production choices :) hope you're enjoying the new setup and editing choices too.
Russ you are a madman making two videos in a day, and we love you for it, but please enjoy a well earned vacation!
Russ, half your head is in darkness with the new studios lighting, at my TVs brightness level. Audio seems a lot flatter too.
Liking the dual reviews you’ve been doing lately.
You do a wonderful job man. The Cube looks really cool
Love the content, Russ! Really miss the other studio, though. The audio seems a bit off in this space compared to the dynamics in the other area, too. Amazing review as usual!
You did good Russ! Even off the cuff the video was good, you maybe stumbled a little with the delivery and energy at the beginning but by the end you were in your RGC flow. Off the cuff is fine for these first impressions going forward!! But I do like the special curation for the big reviews. Enjoy the journey!
Like the new studio layout Russ! Great vid and can't wait to see more!
Watched both videos because I appreciate your hard work, especially before a vacation! Thanks Russ! I'm still on the fence about the Odin 2 Mini, but I'm kinda sold on the RG Cube since I've been wanting an upgrade from the RGB30, and it seems to be more powerful than the ZPG A1 Unicorn. Also, 28:41 really sums up Anbernic well lmao
This thing looks way better than I thought it would end up being. If it's priced right, I could see it doing super well.
I was hoping you get the red retro grey RG cube and there it is! Love your videos as always!
We need a clamshell version of this! Add a 6 Button layout (A B C X Y Z) for fighting, Genesis, Saturn and N64 games. Along with front facing speakers and better sticks, Anbernic will have a slam dunk! Willing this into existence. Thanks Russ!!
The follow mode in leds lighting is awesome!
Whichever way u decide to make videos, they still rock. U are the undisputed GOAT in the Retro Community.
the power button being on the side is insane
Insane spelled "China"
I love anbernic honestly😭😭 i dont plan on buying something of theirs for a while but i love watching you review them🫶🏻
Ordered the black one a few hours ago...looking forward to this little guy!
Gamecube controller has always been the most comfortable to me, glad to see the grips make it into this space.
I’m surprised at how cute and charming this thing is. Didn’t think I’d want one but I’m kind of starting to
Man when you pulled out the Odin Mini 2, immediately you notice the build quality of that thing compared to the Cube. Man I’m excited to get that Mini
