That would be me. Russ himself is a treat to watch but, I have no interest in this device since I already own both an RG35SP and a Steam Deck OLED. But when Anbernic FINALLY does stop this single screen teasing and drops a dual screen device that ain't close to the price of an AYANEO Flip DS, THEN maybe I'll drop my hard earned money on another device.
No that's $60-$75, $219 for the Handheld plus $20 4PX Shipping or $35 DHL shipping. That's either $239 or $254 dollars shipped. You're Math is WAY off!
Whats the shiping cost for each of those ,plus anbernic devices have much more deals ,i would actually prefer this to a rp5 mini ,the difference at the end will be a lot more than 20 dollars.
That’s my thought too. RP mini is more powerful. The smaller screen size is the only thing that gives most people pause. But one thing to consider is Anbernics price drop sometimes, Retroid devices rarely change prices.
44:15 The rp5 being 16:9 is less of an issue as OLED screens don't have a backlight, so you can play 4:3 games like it was a 4:3 display. It'll just be wider to hold.
There's still an issue as modern OLED is still susceptible to burn in, after a few years of constant 4:3 gaming those black bars will definitely show marks on full screen content.
@elektromagnetik2786 ??? Are you not aware how OLEDs work? Black bars means the lights are off. They can't get burn in if they're off. If that was true keeping your screen off would cause burn in.

It’s not bad, but RP5 is quite a bit better for not much more. I do like Anbernic buttons though, but that’s not enough by itself. Also for people wanting a smaller device, the RP Mini is also really nice. Personally I can’t go back to IPS screens after having OLED.
Well heck. I was a little concerned about the height of the sticks, but I have been wishing for a 4:3 handheld that was actually comfortable to play first-person shooters on and you sold me on it! I'll be picking up a 406H as my Christmas present to myself next month ^_^

I had been anticipating this one and waiting for at least six months for it to finally arrive. I'm glad I didn't wait and preordered the RP5. I could live with the performance of the T820 and would be happy with the screen and the usability of the sticks, but it's so thick that it's not pocketable! The extra length of the RP5 will be less noticeable to carry around than another 10mm of thickness.

@@lilrockstar77 I agree with Skycloud above. I understand companies trying to make a profit, that's cool. I just don't see that much innovation beyond the many handheld devices I already have. This particular handheld is not really that competitive at that price range for what it offers, but if you have no handhelds at all, it is a viable choice. The problem is that this audience, for the most part, already have the devices they need. I personally have so many handheld devices that I could open up a store. Regardless of all of the devices that have come out, nothing is really competing that much with the steam deck unless you have a use case for Android or Windows on a portable platform that is not already being met. I love my Anbernic devices, but I'm good at this point. I have small portable devices that fill that need and the very light Steam Deck for everything else portable. Everything else, I'm playing on a TV or a monitor. There is an argument made for pocketabilty, but personally, I almost never leave the house without my camera bag which easily holds my steam deck. All good, everybody has a different use case, but I would give Anbernic a , meh, nice try on this one.
I think the more relevant comparison is this device against the recently discounted RP4P. With more similar performance, it's mostly a 16:9 vs 4:3 battle.
Anbernic is a nice Chinese colleague who invites us to their home whenever they come up with another fried rice recipe. It's always great and you can still enjoy it but it's so often that you can't tell the difference from the previous one.
I'm surprised and pleased that the thumbsticks don't have cardinal snapping. The more I see of this device, the more compelling it seems. As for Anbernic's next iteration? I can see them doing a version of the RG556 but in a much slimmer and compact case with the 406H's thumbsticks. In other words, something to compete more directly with the RP5.
I have spent about $1000 combined on all the small purchases like this thinking I couldn’t afford the Odin2 or steam deck. Turns out I should have purchased the one I wanted in the first place, at least I have pulled up for now. If I had my time over, I would purchase the Odin2 and Anbernic SP version. I think they pump out models because there are other suckers out there falling for consumerism. I wish they would just focus on power, oled, sticks and ergonomics - that would cut the numbers down to about 3 imo.
I think the way to go for their next devices would be extra features and serving particular niches - something Anbernic is actually better than competition. Like for instance I think their Arc was really cool and unique, but it was underpowered. So a T820 Arc Pro with this cool screen would be sweet (maybe drop a stick or two if it doesn't hurt the design too much). T820 isn't enough for Beetle core, but AFAIK it is enough for a lot of 2D Saturn titles using Saturn.emu (basically same code base as Beetle, sans Retroarch overhead). Which brings me to a pickle. I kinda like the 406H, but I wanna wait a month or two to see if they'll actually make an Arc Pro. Because that's a device I would enjoy a lot more than 406H.
Exactly, or if you want to take it from another side, Russ said in the video that this will cost about 160 before shipping. Not sure why people compare price of this one shipped with RP5 price before shipping. It's 160 vs 220, that's at least 30% and not just a "bit more". Plus Anbernic devices get better deals on AliExpress and sooner from release date than retroid
I really like the design of this device. I was hoping for it to be more pocketable which is what i am looking for at the moment. The price is pretty good for the performance but would have liked to see a better chipset next time.
Another informative vid Russ! The RG406H looks decent but I agree with the concern regarding frequency of new devices Anbernic releases. I would rather them put out more premium devices, at least annually. For example how about an upgraded version of the RG405M? I love the form factor and the metal case provides a premium look and feel.I do have comfort grips that I can put on for extended gameplay, so I'd like for them to keep the same thin form factor. Ideally, making a metal version to compete with the Retroid Pocket 5 would def be on my wish list!
im surprised the rp4 pro didnt come up. it's still more powerful for basically the same price as this now. i'd imagine it's slightly wider but not by much while also being much more thin and pocket friendly, albeit with the sacrifice of some ergonomics. id be curious to see what 4:3 content looks like on the rp4 pro vs the 406h. this is a cool device but im glad i didnt wait for it and ordered a rp5
@Pridetoons probably though if ever it didn't i think it is because unisoc is much cheaper than sd...but if Anbernic really considers snapdragon the competition between them and retroid is skyrocketed....sales might gain more 💯
I like the crappy short ones on my rg35xxh since I actually stick it in my pocket, stick side towards my leg my boss cant tell I have a handheld in my pocket or wherever I bring it. It's nice and comfortable to pull in and out of my pocket without snagging. If I had one I would just throw in a baggy or my hoody pockets or around the house, I'd use something bigger like a steamdeck, rg 556, or rp5 pro. Wish they'd make a rg35xxh size handheld with the squared up sides it has, but the sega dpad and maybe vertically stacked triggers somewhat closer to the GBA's.
@@JohnSmith-fq3rg I just hate the way they feel to use. I feel they were made as an in-between for D-pads and analog sticks (the joycons don't have D-pads) when in practice they lack the prescision a D-pad can provide and have like no range in movement meaning it really is the worst of both worlds. Edit: also drift
I am happy with my RG40XXH, it does a lot for $60, I'm just sad they didn't release a transparent model. I wouldn't upgrade from that to anything without an OLED screen.
Do you think Anbernic will come out with an SP version of this handheld? I would be inyerested in that for the form factor, but I already have a RP5 on the way so I don't need one of these. As per usual thank you Russ for your wonderful review. I could listen to you reviewing a water hose 😅 lol.
All these devices are great, they're all comfy, they all play the same thing, they all have the same features. All great. Now please, just find ways to sell them for cheaper. It's essentially 200 dollars, not worth it for a lot of us.
I have been waiting for this, but now I want to see comparison of the 406h vs the aya Neo pocket micro I want to play GameCube specifically luigis mansion on the go but which one would be better for this
Thats my current handheld. I look at this, 556, and rp5 and think about going next level…but I barely use it as-is. Longer I wait, the better these things get
I mean, obviously, if you want an OLED 1080p screen---and maybe even a bit bigger one---wait. But otherwise, yeah, this seems like a great place to jump in on a handheld. It really doesn't seem like it gets much better than this.
How does the finish on the white device compare to the finish on the clear purple one? I like gritty textures, and the purple one actually looked grittier to me. Also the black bezels looks less like an eye sore on it.
I know the Retroid Pocket 4/Pro have basically been replaced by the Pocket 5 now, but I can't help thinking the Pocket 4 at the reduced price of $135 is a far better option than the RG406H at $180?
I don't understand why nobody tries to do a Nontendo GemaCoob C-stick style analog sticks (I call them analog-nipples) 🤔 They would be quite pocket-able and still very usable.
I love my super lightweight options (Miyoo Mini+, RGXX35 H, A30) and my Steam Deck. I am waiting for that perfect device to replace my Steam Deck but the Odin2 is just not there yet. The RG406 and the RP devices just aren't powerful enough for me.

It's a nice looking device, but the timing of it is bad. The Retroid Pocket 5 is too much competition and a more favorable handheld so I'll still be going for that. If it weren't for the RP5, I might've had some interest in it.

@Pridetoons probably though if ever it didn't i think it is because unisoc is much cheaper than sd...but if Anbernic really considers snapdragon the competition between them and retroid is skyrocketed....sales might gain more 💯
this one is the best for me, better than retroid ones, good good good
By the time I finish this video another one will be announced.
Such hilarious.
I know having choices is so hard.
another day another anbernic!
Seeing the comparaisons the RP Mini should have been like the RG406H.
because of the controls, this may actually be ANBERNIC's "future" best selling handheld... just my thought
I'm just glad Anbernic finally ditched those horrendous analog sticks.
I’m either gonna get this or the Odin 2 mini. I’m leaning more towards this one because of the battery life though
I am happy with my RG40XXH, it does a lot for $60, I'm just sad they didn't release a transparent model. I wouldn't upgrade from that to anything without an OLED screen.
Lets wait for the next iteration, that will have the thumbsticks correcly placed, on the same level.
just set up a 406v for a dude at work, I like the screen
3:12 that's cool and all but I'm more interested in that plushie of Jesus lol
Do you think Anbernic will come out with an SP version of this handheld? I would be inyerested in that for the form factor, but I already have a RP5 on the way so I don't need one of these. As per usual thank you Russ for your wonderful review. I could listen to you reviewing a water hose 😅 lol.
I really wish these sticks could be put into 556 would make it my perfect device
I love this thing!
All these devices are great, they're all comfy, they all play the same thing, they all have the same features. All great. Now please, just find ways to sell them for cheaper. It's essentially 200 dollars, not worth it for a lot of us.
Now what am I going to watch on Sunday?
I have been waiting for this, but now I want to see comparison of the 406h vs the aya Neo pocket micro I want to play GameCube specifically luigis mansion on the go but which one would be better for this
If only there were a 4:3 OLED screen around 4-5" available to all of these retro handheld OEMs
Aya Neo managed to get one for the DMG. Probably one of the reasons it is so expensive though.
For the moment, i prefer my Trimui Smart Pro
Does the Trimui Smart Pro have R3 and L3 buttons?🤔
but do you really?
The Trimui Smart Pro is a pretty good Handheld.
Thats my current handheld. I look at this, 556, and rp5 and think about going next level…but I barely use it as-is. Longer I wait, the better these things get
@@Mosestylez No :)
Asynchronous sticks is a deal breaker
seem to recall that fog in the getaway was there in the original ps2 version as well
I mean, obviously, if you want an OLED 1080p screen---and maybe even a bit bigger one---wait. But otherwise, yeah, this seems like a great place to jump in on a handheld. It really doesn't seem like it gets much better than this.
This one is the best of this chip series.
How does the finish on the white device compare to the finish on the clear purple one? I like gritty textures, and the purple one actually looked grittier to me. Also the black bezels looks less like an eye sore on it.
I just got my lunch, perfect timing😂
No battery life?
real quistion is if the analog sticks actually work unlike every other anbernic
There is a way to remove the fog in The Getaway as I had the same problem when I played it on the Steam Deck.
we already have a 4" 4:3 horizontal released only a couple months ago from anbernic the RgXCFDR$#@@ blah blah.. 4" is tired now, we need a 5" minimum 4:3 device.. that will be the retro king
RG40XXH is a different performance level, tops out at PSP 1x/2x for some games. You won't be playing PS2 or GC games on that one
@@dominikcech1478 never said i wanted to.. i own that one already and it's perfect for 16bit and below.. all we need now is a 5" screen 4:3 for that era of games is my point
I think I'll keep the 405m, not enough change to warrant a replacement.
Lol...I tapped out about a year ago. Don't even call me unless they come out with a device with a different and more powerful chip. I'd pay, maybe 60 dollars top for this. Hard pass at 180.
YEAH MAN, I WANNA DO IT!
NGL this is tempting to get but the RP5 seems more premium
These sticks look like a homemade mod.
It's a nice looking device, but the timing of it is bad. The Retroid Pocket 5 is too much competition and a more favorable handheld so I'll still be going for that. If it weren't for the RP5, I might've had some interest in it.
Hey, Russ. You know if the sticks can be put in older anbernic devices?
Thank you for the great content 😊 watching this with a new baby sleeping on me.
Native games on this would be cool. Even though I might not be meant for that. Maybe Supertux.
Almost there Anbernic. Almost there.
How I feel after every release.
