Anbernic confirmed this morning that they have created a fix for the video out slowdown bug, and sent me videos of it working. The OTA update should be out in a couple days and will be included with all retail units. I’ll update this comment once I have the OTA and can confirm it’s fixed on my end too.
Will there be an update like this for the RG556? Because I have been having the exact same problem with my RG556. It makes it impossible for me to enjoy my games on the big screen...
Good to know! I got the 406V btw, and it's kind of uncomfortable to hold for games that require the sticks... I'm returning it and getting this one instead.

Well that is True especially coming from Anbernic of all People. But I guess out of some curiosity people wanted to see a Horizontal Version of the RG406V. I’m honestly getting exhausted as much as the next guy, can’t imagine what Anbernic will finally do if they Get a Snapdragon Chip just like Retroid did with the Pocket 5/MiNi. @UMvsC3DPFWPW Same man. I like the fact that buyers have options on what form factor to choose; but feel like they can afford to slow down and focus on higher specs etc at this point. Another option for those not going the RP Mini/RP5 route, is getting the RP4 Pro, if you dont mind the device being 16x9. The price range is close to this device, provides better performance, and may be more pocketable. However you do lose on the ergonomics but that depends on whats more important to you. Lastly they do have a separate grip attachment if ergonomics is a concern.
Every time a new device drops I think, “I need that” despite owning multiple other devices. By the time I’m done watching Russ’ videos I’m brought down to reality. You’ve equally saved me money and convinced me to just buy it.

The flood of the handhelds is astonishing, and most of them are just a day1 e-waste. I dont have a much time to play, so I need to be really selective. Thanks for helping to sort this out. Just from an ergonomic standpoint, I really hope these catch on and anbernic continues making thicker grip handhelds. Being flat and pocketable is cool, but not a huge concern for me. I'd rather have something that's gonna stay comfortable in my hands and flat handhelds just make me cramp after a while of use.
44:15 The rp5 being 16:9 is less of an issue as OLED screens don't have a backlight, so you can play 4:3 games like it was a 4:3 display. It'll just be wider to hold.
There's still an issue as modern OLED is still susceptible to burn in, after a few years of constant 4:3 gaming those black bars will definitely show marks on full screen content.
@elektromagnetik2786 ??? Are you not aware how OLEDs work? Black bars means the lights are off. They can't get burn in if they're off. If that was true keeping your screen off would cause burn in.

It's 2:17 AM here. Can't sleep. Happens frequently with nightmares from my former life as a firefighter in a busy area. I always appreciate your videos. I love "retro" gaming (I added the quotes because I'm 36 and remember when it wasn't retro) and always find your videos informative and relaxing to watch, even when I have to turn down the volume so I don't wake the wife and kids. Thank you.
No that's $60-$75, $219 for the Handheld plus $20 4PX Shipping or $35 DHL shipping. That's either $239 or $254 dollars shipped. You're Math is WAY off!
Whats the shiping cost for each of those ,plus anbernic devices have much more deals ,i would actually prefer this to a rp5 mini ,the difference at the end will be a lot more than 20 dollars.
That’s my thought too. RP mini is more powerful. The smaller screen size is the only thing that gives most people pause. But one thing to consider is Anbernics price drop sometimes, Retroid devices rarely change prices.
33:14 X-Men legends I and II are some of my favorite games ever, the nostalgia I get with those games hits hard and has made it's way into the rotation for me and my wife to play co-op, I really like the fact that you touch on some mid tier games that some people love even if they are not amazing or popular, this video is amazing thank you for your work
I had been anticipating this one and waiting for at least six months for it to finally arrive. I'm glad I didn't wait and preordered the RP5. I could live with the performance of the T820 and would be happy with the screen and the usability of the sticks, but it's so thick that it's not pocketable! The extra length of the RP5 will be less noticeable to carry around than another 10mm of thickness.
Another great review! So I saw the Rg40XXV video and I went and bought it! Now I’m seeing this one and it seems like a very good thing! I would like to see it size comparison with psvita slim. Also this one, the Rg556 or the retroid p5 … 😅 Ross you are the boss! Thank you 🙏 for making reborn the retro nostalgia in me 😂. I’m going to ask Anbernic if they want to have to have a year subscription where we receive every handheld they made 😂
I've been waiting for this device! I think this is going to be my first Retro handheld because I wanted something versatile. It's a shame that it seems to struggle with Sega Saturn, as that was one of the systems I was really looking forwards to, but I really wanted to emulate some of my favorite games from GBC all the way up to Game Cube. This seems like the right device for me... but after having watched so many of these reviews over the last month, I think I'm also gonna get a nice smaller pocketable version to play more analog games at work.
8:30 everytime rp mini comes up in a size comparison, I'm painfully reminded of that proportionally small screen compared to most handheld of similar size. If they can't source a bigger screen, I wished that they just made the rp mini a bit smaller
i think this is my dream 4:3 device; joysticks are not aligned (which is good), good LCD screen, besel adds to the crt experience and the material quality that anbernic provides is the icing on the top... will be a day one buy for me i think. and a rp5 for a 16:9 device and i'm set for life.
Well heck. I was a little concerned about the height of the sticks, but I have been wishing for a 4:3 handheld that was actually comfortable to play first-person shooters on and you sold me on it! I'll be picking up a 406H as my Christmas present to myself next month ^_^
I deeply deeply wish this was more powerful, I would love a 4" 4:3 device that can do the full ps2 and gc library. This is almost the perfect device imo other than the chip.
Dang, I kind of wish I had waited for this instead of getting the RG Cube. Love the higher profile sticks and the aspect ratio of the screen would be better for a wider range of systems. The 1:1 ratio on the Cube is cool for some stuff, but you lose a ton of real estate on others.
Great review as ever. I'm a bit torn between the RG CubeXX arriving any second now, versus holding out for a (let's face it, probably inevitable) H700 variant of this 960x720 406H model. H700 is the sweet spot for the systems I would want to play on a device like this, and 4:3 would be S-Rank for 4:3, and probably A-Rank for 10:9, 1:1, and 3:2 systems. Hmm... 🤔
I just wish a device like this could make its price down to around $100. The retroid pocket 2s was that device back in the day. (Of course now its not as powerful but still holds up a bit)
I'm surprised and pleased that the thumbsticks don't have cardinal snapping. The more I see of this device, the more compelling it seems. As for Anbernic's next iteration? I can see them doing a version of the RG556 but in a much slimmer and compact case with the 406H's thumbsticks. In other words, something to compete more directly with the RP5.
To anyone having issues with how often these companies release handhelds think about it like this. - Don't let the consumerism in you win. Buy the thing and enjoy said thing while its useful. I use to upgrade my phone every year until i realized how long phones work before they died was their more important attribute. Most people don't even have time to take advantage of the cadence of upgrades companies offer. - On that last note. Their need to upgrade every couple months or every year has little to do with you personally so don't take it that way. They are fighting to get as much attention as they can. For a hardware only company the steam route is out of the equation cause they cant make money on the software side. So they cant sit on the same hardware for long. Money slows. So They are hoping one of the hardware updates will get the attention of some of the untapped market as well as current customers.
I think new handhelds are getting held back more by software these days. PS2 emulation is not being updated on Android. Xbox emulation isn't even a thing on these lower end handhelds. So it'll be nice if the community draws together to get more out of these devices.
@@skycloud4802 they are held back for sure. The return on investment for having better software could be low though since they can’t sell the games they are marketing the devices for legally. We seen a few decent attempts. Ouya stands out and the most popular but still failure.
One thing always at the back of my mind though, is the international politics sides of things. The potential of price creep or bans. Tarrifs, taxes, sanctions, and other petty nonsense. Especially with Trump in charge. Then there's the question whether the CCP will want to capitalise on this new market in the future by infecting them with malware, spyware or something. Or a batch of dodgy pager-like handhelds supposed to be due for Iran.
@@lilrockstar77 I agree with Skycloud above. I understand companies trying to make a profit, that's cool. I just don't see that much innovation beyond the many handheld devices I already have. This particular handheld is not really that competitive at that price range for what it offers, but if you have no handhelds at all, it is a viable choice. The problem is that this audience, for the most part, already have the devices they need. I personally have so many handheld devices that I could open up a store. Regardless of all of the devices that have come out, nothing is really competing that much with the steam deck unless you have a use case for Android or Windows on a portable platform that is not already being met. I love my Anbernic devices, but I'm good at this point. I have small portable devices that fill that need and the very light Steam Deck for everything else portable. Everything else, I'm playing on a TV or a monitor. There is an argument made for pocketabilty, but personally, I almost never leave the house without my camera bag which easily holds my steam deck. All good, everybody has a different use case, but I would give Anbernic a , meh, nice try on this one.
I' watching this on a 6+ years old tablet. It still works. Poor battery with thousands of charge cycles is basically dead though. I plug it in a powerbank or to the wall. I hate throwing things that still work.
I think the way to go for their next devices would be extra features and serving particular niches - something Anbernic is actually better than competition. Like for instance I think their Arc was really cool and unique, but it was underpowered. So a T820 Arc Pro with this cool screen would be sweet (maybe drop a stick or two if it doesn't hurt the design too much). T820 isn't enough for Beetle core, but AFAIK it is enough for a lot of 2D Saturn titles using Saturn.emu (basically same code base as Beetle, sans Retroarch overhead). Which brings me to a pickle. I kinda like the 406H, but I wanna wait a month or two to see if they'll actually make an Arc Pro. Because that's a device I would enjoy a lot more than 406H.
It’s not bad, but RP5 is quite a bit better for not much more. I do like Anbernic buttons though, but that’s not enough by itself. Also for people wanting a smaller device, the RP Mini is also really nice. Personally I can’t go back to IPS screens after having OLED.
This is pretty great, if I hadn't gotten my odin 2 mini I think I'd have been more keen on this. Either way, cool to see the live progression of Anbernic's devices
I’m thinking about getting one for Christmas but I’m a little worried about the vignetting… how noticeable is it?? And did you get the standard device or the pro? Would love to hear
To watch or not to watch. I’m really curious and I love listening to Russ’ soothing voice. But if I watch I might be tempted to buy. And the last thing I need is another device. Aye, there’s the rub.
Fantastic review, as always. I've been eagerly awaiting this one. I'm surprised by the color selection though. It's a premium looking device with an extremely bland, neutral color scheme. Strange. Any chance they'll add more colors?
I've already got the RG28XX and RG35XX H, which are enough for me to catch up on retro games I missed. So yeah, I’m definitely waiting for a better product from Anbernic in a year or two.
I'm almost sold on this one, but then I think, it's only a matter of time before Anbernic updates the RG556 with Hall Effect sticks and some of the other features they've incorporated on this device. This one is very tempting.
I've watched all your videos on Handhelds for along time now, However we are now getting to a point where they are all getting better in performance. I would like to know your opinion on what do you think is the best and cheapest handheld that can play Ps2 games. Its usually the question i hear the most. Seeing as its typically Need for speed games that tend to struggle. Id love to know what your recommendation is on performance + price regardless on size or features.
Got this one for a few days, loved it, was good playing some retro games. Thought to my self, I need more power. more bigger screen. now, I got the odin 2 base. and well, it was the best choice I made. been loving it since day 1
"This is no fault of anbernics but there is some really stiff competition out there" ... well, at this point they released half of their competition :p Looks like a pretty good device, but even if I decide I need another retro handheld it's likely going to be the RP5. And even on that one I'm going back and forth.
I'm going to get one, but it's just BARELY not perfect. The next one could be! This is only a few steps from my dream mid-range device! 💚 Just add: OLED, Start/Select up top, and a more modern Snapdragon! 🎉 One more generation?! 🎉
Another informative vid Russ! The RG406H looks decent but I agree with the concern regarding frequency of new devices Anbernic releases. I would rather them put out more premium devices, at least annually. For example how about an upgraded version of the RG405M? I love the form factor and the metal case provides a premium look and feel.I do have comfort grips that I can put on for extended gameplay, so I'd like for them to keep the same thin form factor. Ideally, making a metal version to compete with the Retroid Pocket 5 would def be on my wish list!
I find it really hard to buy an Anbernic device these days, it just constantly feels like a waste of money when you know the next 'big console' from them is probably a few months out.
I got RG406V like a month ago, configured it like a week ago (I like to have saves syncing via syncthing configured etc.) and yet, I watch a review of RG406H and I think - yea, I like it, I'd like to have it! xD Sometimes I have a feeling that configuring everything gives me more fun haha ;)
I'm no fan of Modest Mouse's work, but I can *always* respect wearing a shirt from a somewhat lesser-known/indie band. I'd also like to toss out a recommendation for the band Elder, and pretty much any album aside from their very very first is an amazing starting point.
28:33 You can use CRT geom or eve Fake CRT geom. It doesn't matter if you have integer scale or not, it'll look great (I'd advice non integer scale, so the CRT filter fills all the screen).

No that's $60-$75, $219 for the Handheld plus $20 4PX Shipping or $35 DHL shipping. That's either $239 or $254 dollars shipped. You're Math is WAY off!
Woah 180$?? I had to pause there and comment. At that point just get the RPmini ??? That’s a crazy price point during this time.
This time? The price is comparable to their other devices w/ this CPU.
@@neil_b4_zodExactly, this one will be $30 or more cheaper once third party sellers have them.
screen too small
Planning on getting this one just for GC
Also this one, the Rg556 or the retroid p5 … 😅
Ross you are the boss! Thank you 🙏 for making reborn the retro nostalgia in me 😂.
I’m going to ask Anbernic if they want to have to have a year subscription where we receive every handheld they made 😂
One obs: Make not made 😅
I've been waiting for this device!
I hope you do a year review for 2024 of cheapest to dearest of all devices
Yes Anbernic !
Do an "RG406M" next month !!
I love how SoR2 is used as the reference for testing audio.
GOAT video game soundtrack.
I don’t know why but you just make the best videos I always decide what I will buy from you thank you for all you do 😊
Perfect analysis as always. Congratulations!
You know i want the comparison to the rpmini and you're gonna make me wait for it. I respect that
love your videos!
Hmm... 🤔
I need it, I need all of them, my country just announced that they're gonna reduce the import taxes, I NEED THEM ALL
Russ I love watching your videos very informative man make it easy to decide if I want it or not your Smart Man
I just wish a device like this could make its price down to around $100.
How would you feel about a Super Charged Sega Game Gear that can play every Sega Saturn game? 😁
Perfect replacement/upgrade for my lovely RG405M; that’s in instant purchase for me.
Like this video?
Me: "Yeah man, I wanna do it."
I much prefer this analog stick layout to that of retroids. I find for GC and PS2 it’s a much more comfortable play experience.
Personally I can go either way.
nah
@@fairyboy444 well that’s just like your opinion
@@ATTACKM4Nwrong opinion
RP5 analog stick layout was such a fuckup.
It’s not bad, but RP5 is quite a bit better for not much more. I do like Anbernic buttons though, but that’s not enough by itself. Also for people wanting a smaller device, the RP Mini is also really nice. Personally I can’t go back to IPS screens after having OLED.
“Not much more”. Seems like the real final price incl. tax and shipping is probably 65% or so of RP5.
The 406V is the one for me! Verticals FTW.
Finally. Excited about this device including the rp5
We are in the golden age of retro handhelds
Still hoping for a "2DSXL" knock-off. The original ones are getting old, trashed/recycled after breaking, or sitting in collections.
I'll check in next week for a new Anbernic handheld
I've already got the RG28XX and RG35XX H, which are enough for me to catch up on retro games I missed. So yeah, I’m definitely waiting for a better product from Anbernic in a year or two.
This is one of the handhelds of all times.
Yes... but then, every handheld is one of the handhelds of all times.
another day another anbernic!
Thought to my self, I need more power. more bigger screen. now, I got the odin 2 base. and well, it was the best choice I made. been loving it since day 1
We're getting close to the 'forever' handhelds
"This is no fault of anbernics but there is some really stiff competition out there" ... well, at this point they released half of their competition :p
Looks like a pretty good device, but even if I decide I need another retro handheld it's likely going to be the RP5. And even on that one I'm going back and forth.
Anbernic should release more devices... I feel like they haven't done this enough...
If this had 6 button layout it would be an insta-purchase for me.
7:21 ...Same... give us a RG556R(evision) or RG557 with the new hardware, but same 16x9, 1080 screen and shape, and I'm sold...
all we need is an updated ambernec rg556 with better controls and hall effect sticks and im sold fr
I love these kind of videos
I'm going to get one, but it's just BARELY not perfect. The next one could be! This is only a few steps from my dream mid-range device! 💚 Just add: OLED, Start/Select up top, and a more modern Snapdragon! 🎉 One more generation?! 🎉
Russ didn’t ask me to get my favorite snack and drink 😢
Another informative vid Russ! The RG406H looks decent but I agree with the concern regarding frequency of new devices Anbernic releases. I would rather them put out more premium devices, at least annually. For example how about an upgraded version of the RG405M? I love the form factor and the metal case provides a premium look and feel.I do have comfort grips that I can put on for extended gameplay, so I'd like for them to keep the same thin form factor. Ideally, making a metal version to compete with the Retroid Pocket 5 would def be on my wish list!
So to fix the frequency with which they launch new handhelds, you want them to release another handheld? 😂
@@zwenkwiel816 yes, one good one instead of a horde of mediocre ones.
@@HunnysPlaylists fair point I guess. Like took em 12 different handhelds to do something about those aweful thumbsticks...
The final thing that needs to be fixed on H devices is that cursed button placement for Start and Select.
I find it really hard to buy an Anbernic device these days, it just constantly feels like a waste of money when you know the next 'big console' from them is probably a few months out.
This one is the best of this chip series.
I got RG406V like a month ago, configured it like a week ago (I like to have saves syncing via syncthing configured etc.) and yet, I watch a review of RG406H and I think - yea, I like it, I'd like to have it! xD
Sometimes I have a feeling that configuring everything gives me more fun haha ;)
I'm no fan of Modest Mouse's work, but I can *always* respect wearing a shirt from a somewhat lesser-known/indie band. I'd also like to toss out a recommendation for the band Elder, and pretty much any album aside from their very very first is an amazing starting point.
With that Nintendo button layout i am definitely getting this one 🙏🏽
Wow. This look really good. The H look way better than 406 V
i would be more than happy with a 406v in a classic gameboy color scheme with a square brick shape, only thinner
ok this one really looks the best in that series
Says every Anbernic customer
Wow that modest mouse fit slaps
You're looking at it the wrong way: full size analog sticks that you can pop off so as to put the unit into your pocket.
Get ready to lose them within a day, then.
It’s a must for me I been waiting for this one I don’t like vertical handhelds..and definitely want the white one
28:33 You can use CRT geom or eve Fake CRT geom. It doesn't matter if you have integer scale or not, it'll look great (I'd advice non integer scale, so the CRT filter fills all the screen).
Nice, I've been waiting since the RG353 and when the RG Cube came out I thought this would be it but yes the RG406H is going to be mine! ^^
