    I love your videos sir. Your positive and humble demeanor are something that we dont see very often anymore. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. I'm in Jeff Davis Co. as well, and I'm new to traditional bows (shot compounds off and on for years) so I'm trying to learn all that I can. Again thanks for taking time to share your experiences with us.

    The guys making bows with Hatchet Dan were my buddies, I was not able to make that trip but will surely be at the next one and will try to make the horseshoe creek hunt. We all went out to Stewart this past week and it was good hunting, in new at still hunting the swamp but just follow what you and Dendy do. We all got to shoot at pigs, some us missed but that’s the way it goes, it was good practice. Matt actually shot 2 medium sized pigs with 1 arrow on the last hunt before coming home but we didn’t find the second one. It was his first pig kill hunting this way. It sure is fun picking through the swamp, with the water level being so low we were hunting right along the river. Thanks for the video, knowledge and genuine good fellowship. Glad your leg is healing up and you are getting back to it. Take care!

    I just got around to watching this video while in my garage on this fine Sunday morning, cooking up a sausage n cheese omelet in an old cast iron skillet. There were deer feeding in my clover out back, and you were on my phone talking about the bows and the good Lord. I'm so glad there are people like you who openly give the Lord credit, and are unashamed of it. Just think how great this country could be if so many people hadn't decided to push God to the side in hopes of making a new and better way. That never works. I'm very excited to try the new recurve i just bought. Been using a compound since I was 12, I'm 42 now. Time for a switch in methods. I'll quit rambling now. Great videos. You seem to be a dang good man! God Bless ya!!

    Robert, my favorite bow is that Mohawk SparrowHawk. I am a sucker for that D shaped tiller. Speaking of D shapes, that knotty bow is incredible. When you unstrung it, it has no string follow. I am sad that I got rid of some bows that were special to me. I had a Bear "Whitetail" recurve (45/50#@28"/30"). Another neat recurve was a 50# fasco bow (it had a aggresive shape; very fast. I had a chance to buy a JK Chastain (used) recurve at Bob's Archery in Aurora, Co., back in the nineties for only 350, but money was so tight. I have made some decent osage orange self bows, but never killed a deer with one, just small game. I just bought a reflex deflex bow (52#@28" an "RD Bones" from Kramer Ammons of Shatterproof Archery. Beautiful bow, great guy...and this one I am keeping). Thanks for the "movie". You are an interesting guy with some great bows and awesome stories!!!

    What a pile of awesome bows! I have more bows now than I can hunt with and yet I was drooling at many of your bows. I have several self bows as well, I have made them all except for one which a great friend made and gave me. I shoot about 26" but my weight has dropped down to 45# or less. Have had a lot of health issues that have slowed me down but still shooting and hunting, just a lot closer to the road and mostly from the ground now. The Good Lord has blessed me with a great many things, more than I am worthy of and I am extremely thankful. I enjoy your videos very much, you are very down to earth, easy to understand your reasons. I also enjoy the fact that you Shine for our Lord, I have a shirt that is similar to yours as well. I love the sleekness and sheer beauty of the longbows and selfbows, much like you do and how they shoot. Hard to get any simpler than them. The persimmon riser is very awesome and for what it represents to you, a very cool thing indeed. While I am nowhere as bow poor as you are, I am very thankful for what I have. Have been fortunate to be able to pass some bows off to my son-n-law and two grandsons. The big thing that people like us have that so many today don't grasp is the memories of the woods and for you, the swamps. So many don't know the first thing about slipping along slowly and quietly with bow in hand. And so Robert, keep the videos coming, love them all.

      @@robertcarte95 Well my Brother, you have several things going for you. First, you know Jesus, second, you are from the south (Arkansas here) third, you trad hunt, fourth, you are a very humble man. So what is not to like? You give praise to Him and you thank Him. You are pretty simple in your life, you know what the important things are, priorities. And you enjoy the Master pieces that our Creator has provided for us to see and utilize. You understand that the journey or experience is what is the most important but you highly appreciate the reward or harvest. I only wish that I could still walk good because I do miss those walk abouts with bow in hand. However, while I may now be a very short distance hunter, I still have those memories of so many blessings. You allow some of us to travel with you as you enjoy what the Master has provided for us to enjoy. I could easily see you teaching Sunday school as I do. Going to enjoy some good pulled pork later today, wish you could be here too. Jerry

    I've been shooting bows now for 12 or 13 years. My first bow and favorite bow is my Mohawk that Vince built me. About 3 years ago I started shooting recurves and have really enjoyed them, but this past weekend I picked that Mohawk up for the first time in 3 years and shot it at the NGTA shoot. I shot better than I have in a very long time. It just feels right. It will be going in the woods with me again this season. Also, I've been wanting a Northern Mist bow for several years, and met Mr Turray at a State shoot a few years ago. I think You just talked me into getting one. Oh and one last thing, I shot a Sunset Hill bamboo backed bow several years ago, and to this day it was the best feeling bow I have ever shot. If I ever can locate the fellow that let me shoot it, I will try to buy it from him because he was willing to sell it to me back then. Anyway, I'm really enjoying your videos, keep 'em coming.

    I too enjoy shooting the longbow but am still a novice when it comes to hunting with them. Just spent so many decades using the recurve for all aspects of archery that I’m still learning to shoot the longbow. Have mostly ASL’s, plus a few r/d short longbows which so far seem to shoot the best because of their slightly similar recurve type grip. But I really like the simplicity of the hill style, mainly my Sunset Hill. Have tried to contact Steve Turay thru his website but so far no response. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    I always liked the old howard hill longbows. They arent fast but they are the most forgiving bow you can get and i always shot them better. Only thing i dont like is the handshock. Right now im shooting a bear longbow. Same style hand grip, little bit of deflex, little bit of reflex, 28 at 60 pounds. No hand shock and it hits with authority.

  • @caseysmith544
    @caseysmith544 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know what you mean, I use on recurve grip bows I am shooting the flat handle/notched handle longbow as close as you do for those and use the same aiming, then with my longbows/reflex deflex all with the notched grip I shoot like flat handle, and the same aiming style I do with all bows.

If you don’t mind, what would be your recommendation for minimum poundage and arrow setup you would take hunting? Thanks in advance.

      A 50 lb longbow will take deer as far as you can hit him. Only problem is the deer won't be in the same place when the arrow gets there. 15 yards and under is a good place to start and stay. I'm not trying to be silly just honest. Traditional bow hunting is a close range hunt.

    Ok I’ve been shooting my longbow off and on for about 3 seasons and hunted with it a couple times, haven’t harvested anything with it yet. I always seem to grab compound and shoot a deer and don’t get excited anymore. Any pointers for becoming more confident with longbow.

    I have a left-handed Howard Hill owl
    And 90 % of the time it hits right were I look
    I might hit 6 shots perfect, the next two will miss my target completely to the right I don't know if I'm limp wristing the grip or overdrawing or plucking hard I've been trying to figure it out do you have any pointers, on how I should be holding the riser with my and I do not want to put a death grip on there any help thanks

      Sounds like your pushing your bow arm out. Make sure to push straight to the target. I grip my Hill bows fairly solid with the heel of my hand down. Jason at Bowhunters Wilderness podcast has an excellent video on gripping Hill style bows. Also look up hitting them like Howard Hill by John Shulze.excellent instruction from a Master.

    On the hill style longbow you made, did you glue that up yourself or was it a kit from somewhere?
