TEACHERS ABANDONED HOUSE w/ CRAZY FIND IN ATTIC *Filled W/ Personal Belongings & Antiques

  • The house I explore was built sometime in the 1800s to early 1900s and was a very interesting style of home. The last owner of it was a local high school teacher, who rented out the property until he passed on sadly. The place has just been used for farm land but unfortunately the land is now in the process of being developed for a new housing development.

This house is starting to crumble and there's one or 2 pieces of furniture that need rescuing.

That place is loaded with valuable antiques and collectibles! It's such a shame it's all slowly decaying. My late grandparents' house has roof supports with the bark still on them. My grandfather told me years ago the trees used to construct the house were cut on the property. I believe the same is true for this house too. I wish someone would buy the house and restore it, but from the looks of some parts of it, it may be too far gone now.

That oven looks like it's straight out of Laura Petrie's kitchen (Dick Van Dyke show). 1963-ish. And you dodged a bullet going in there with that "No Trespassing" sign on the outside of the kitchen door lol. I'd have to say that this house was last occupied by the same family from the mid to late 1940s through to the early 1970s. The wallpaper is the style we did in the late 60s - papering the walls but painting the trim in a coordinating color. The orange carpet, def 70s. The stove, early 60s. The glass book cabinet in the attic is a holdover from the "waterfall" era of the late 1920s. Probably a parent or grandparents hand-me-down. But notice the 1950s "atomic era" furnishings in what I would guess to be the master bedroom where the vines are pulling the window out. That sewing machine on the first floor was from the late 60s, early 70s and probably also went down into the cabinet. The other sewing machine was like the one my grandmother had in the 30's. (I'm 59). The same family had this house for at least 40-50 years. They last updated in the mid to late 60s. That's my guess. Anyway, nice find. I'm keeping the link :) I've got a notepad open to save links of the houses I like to go back and watch again and a possible floor plan for the house I'm going to build. Thanks for all the great ideas!

Kappy, my luv, you are young ;) The green appliances were all the rage in the early 70's. The side by side frig is circa 1972. The "old piece of furniture" downstairs is a china cabinet not from the 1800's but from around 1940. The sewing machine downstairs is 1950's, the one upstairs is 1940's(westinghouse one) The old TV, was likely early 80's. I had one similar in high school. I graduated 1982(now you know how old i am ;) That old kitchen aid mixer in the attic, well that is probably the most valuable thing in that house. People collect those and pay a pretty penny for one in that good of shape. Keep on doing what you do. I thoroughly enjoyed this video-this is the first of yours I've seen. I will have to keep watching now that I have found yours

Some places allow that. Not enough, but some. A group of people do work on the house in exchange for rent then do odd jobs (not enough money to pay high rents) and pool their money while they're getting back on their feet to pay for bills and food. The reason that idea is not getting off the ground is insurance companies. A landlord will create the contract so that everything is legit but his/her insurance company writes it down as a boarding/care home and ups the premiums. But the landlord will only do this until he's got free work done then he evicts them. But, theoretically, its usually about a year and they should be on their feet by then, too. Get rid of greedy assed insurance brokers and this could take off. "You wash my back, I wash yours" kinda thing.

Ian Y Gath I think this is gonna happen more often in the future. When one lives life surrounded only by self and ME, especially in this generation of not relying on having families to live with purpose. Plus social media, and google have taken elders knowledge on customs away. People are now obsessed with it, even though it creates more isolation. it’s only gonna get worse. Except in the future you won’t see sewing machines, China, finely made furniture. Instead it will all be crap from amazon, and soulless, uninteresting items. All in all. It certainly isn’t going to end well.

I’m clear across the country from my family so nothing is valuable enough to come and get anything.

I lived on Long Island in the 1960s. I used to explore the abandoned sharecropper houses that were on the farms. They were much smaller but like these big homes, everything was just left inside; dishes, tables, furniture, clothing, everything. The places looked like the people just dropped everything they were doing and left. What would happen is the big dairy farmers would pass away and the kids didn’t want to work for a living so they sold the farms for lots of money to developers, which included the house, barns, silos, acres of land, etc….and the place would sit empty until the developers would come in and level everything and build housing developments. The Town did save the old Davis Farm meeting house that the colonists used back in the day before the American revolution. It still have horseshoe marks on the wood floors from the horses that they brought inside when it was raining. And the natural kettle pond in the back of the property was turned into a sump for the sewer system. People back then, in the 50s and 60s, we’re not interested in preserving the environment. They just wanted to make money.

I always wonder , what happen to the families that left everything behind? And I come back to some tragedy must of happen. This was a really great find ! And I saw tons of collectibles in the house, like the toys, sewing machines and furniture tons valuables left behind. I guess because it seems so secluded people are not curious to go inside .
Thanks for sharing this great find!!

Was that an old pottery kiln, behind the wringer washer? In the 1950-60's you could get chemistry kits, they had all the good stuff in them, that have been determined too be to dangerous, by today's standards. What a peaceful place, thanks for sharing!

I can never understand why the family just walks away from places like this and leaves everything! That kitchen and bath updating had to have cost some money at one point. And all the antiques in there, those were valuable! Could they even be restored now??

Alot of the time it’s hard for the City or Town to find family of the person who lived their to collect the belongings or whatever is left behind.. Hope when they do redo the property and put in new development that a Antique Collector takes all the old stuff out and saves it from being destroyed

Unfortunately not a lot of families are close knitted in the US like in other cultures where lots of family lives together or the grandparents move in when they get old etc. So often families split up across the country and lose touch, there’s no relatives to claim the stuff, or sadly they don’t care along with other reasons like the other commenters mentioned. Ideally when elders get old they should yard sale their stuff and move in with their children or assisted living but that isn’t the case much these days anymore. So when they pass often things are just abandoned.

  • @Kat-fw9se

And 13:05 I believe its a childrens (teen) chemical/science set. I just bought one from a thrift store recently (1950s) and was shocked that kids would be given all the chemicals to play with back then BUT kids were generally in a different mind set back in the day.

Great old house full of goodies. I had a Gilbert science kit like the one in the attic when I was a kid with a microscope, slides, test tubes and all the assorted chemicals. It was all pretty harmless, but it looked impressive. There were several great pieces of furniture in there too, like that beautiful highboy dresser with the TV on top of it, and the mid-century headboard and dresser in the lower bedroom with the vines coming in the window. I hope somebody saves the house, and the treasures inside it.

Sad I hope someone gets in this house and dave’s the antiques before the house is demolished. I can imagine the time when a family all lived here would of been a nice home nothing fancy , however still nice .
The joints on the drawers are called Dove Tail Joints and the woodwork which is on the wall close to the ceiling is I believe crown moulding. Thank you for documenting this home for us all to see .

Beautiful home! The furniture is gorgeous! I would think the secretary cabinet in the attic was from around 1890, but it was missing the desk part. The rest of the furniture us from 1910s to 1950s. In our family we have a couple of similar pieces. People had pride in their trade and the work they did, snd they made sturdy furniturebuilt to last. It's so sad it's all going to waste. I like those old colored bathroom fixtures. The green bathtub is really cool! Wish I could move into that place.

Shown at 11:02 is a "Full Size" bed with neat headboard and matching foot board. My mother bought a similar set new in 1960 which included a dresser with mirror (Shown in the corner); A high boy dresser (Next to the bed) and a small nightstand (Not seen here). Ours had a Mahogany finish. I inherited the set and was still using everything but the nightstand until 1990. I upgraded the bed to a twin in the early 1980s because a full size bed is not very big. In 1960, the set was considered cheap second rate furniture, but it was still all wood and I guess it might have cost far less than $750 (Do not know). That chemistry set 13:06 in the attic was made by AC Gilbert Company of New Haven, CT. Gilbert made "S" Gauge model trains competing with Lionel. Gilbert went out of business in 1967.
