    These lyrics are the heart of the song:
    You're always letting us humans down
    The wars you bring, the babes you drown
    Those lost at sea and never found
    And it's the same the whole world round
    The hurt I see helps to compound
    The Father, Son, and holy ghost
    Is just somebody's unholy hoax
    In a world filled with so much suffering and brutality, how am I supposed to deal with the idea of a divine being that is both omnipotent and benevolent? A god of this world can't be both.

    Thanks for finally reacting to XTC!! For what it’s worth, I have always loved XTC and still I’ve always been a person of faith. This song spoke to me 40 years ago and it still resonates with me today. While I’m sure that Andy Partridge probably wrote it as an anthem to Atheism, it can also reflect the experience of a sincere crisis of faith that many of us have when we encounter humanity’s cruelty, exploitation and hypocrisy. Confronting God honestly and telling Him that we are angry, grieved and are blaming Him for what his creatures are doing while admitting to Him that we’re also feeling pretty hopeless and betrayed isn’t all that uncommon. For some it can result in a total loss of faith but for others it can inspire a raw, honest and authentic dialogue that can lead to the restoration of their faith.
    I love XTC and Andy Partridge is an impressive lyricist. I’ve often thought that one of the signs of really good song writing is the ability to capture experiences that are universal but also leave enough room for it to be relatable to people with very different beliefs and life experiences. I think he does a very good job with this one! 😊

    • @shmeggylou5671
      @shmeggylou5671 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    • @riariaria
      @riariaria ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@shmeggylou5671 Thanks! I get what you mean but for me the song really captures and expresses the experience of a crisis of faith in God more than offering any real solutions to that crisis. I think the universality of the song is that it helps us feel connected to others who’ve experienced something similar even if they ultimately come to different conclusions. 🙂

I tried to look it up, but I think it said there was another guitarist on that one, playing lead, anyway. Colin Moulding wrote some great songs, too, love him.

    XTC is one of the most interesting rock bands ever, in part because they did so much to self-sabotage their career, like not touring because the band's leader, Andy Partridge, developed stage fright, and changing their sound at the whim again of Padrtridge. They started out as a punk or post-punk band, but then went through a period of doing psychedelic and psychedelic tinged music (some of it under the name Dukes of Stratesphear, a fictional overlooked band from the late 60s.) Also trying to get people to buy their albums on C at a time when many people lacked CD players. This song was originally a bonus track on the Skylarking album that was made a hit by radio DJs, forcing a repressing of the album. It briefly made the band popular until three divorces (The two songwriters each got divorced and they divorced their record label after finding out they were being cheated out of royalties) ended their string of hits. They did come back eventually, but their momentum was gone.
    They also limited their appeal in that the band's second writer was better at writing catchy hooks, but he would generally get 2 of the 10 songs on an album. A lot of the suggestions for other songs people are giving are Moulding songs. (They had very English names). It is not that Moulding's songs are better, but that they have more hot potential.
    Partridge comes off as a bit of a genius who did not care about what anybody thought. He eventually alienated everybody else in the band. And his divorce can be predicted from some of his song lyrics going back to Snowman in the early 80s with the chorus "It isn't even winter and I'm shivering, shivering
    Waiting for the love that's not delivering
    And what I want to know, man
    (Why, oh, why)
    Does she treat me like a snowman?"
    and then he announced his divorce in the early 90s in Madam Barnum with
    If I'm not the sole fool
    Who pulls his trousers down
    Then dear Madam Barnum
    I resign as clown
    Despite this they were very much a band's band. Not everybody in the 80's listened to XTC, but the bands that people listened to in the 80's listened to XTC. They were a staple on college radio stations.

    • @Johnny_Socko
      @Johnny_Socko ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I remember when XTC came on KROQ radio with Jed the Fish to promote their first album of the 90s, and Jed congratulated them on being #1 on the Alternative charts. Andy Partridge laughed and said, "Alternative to what? Selling records?"

    XTC is one of those bands that need some context. You're coming in halfway through their career, and listening to a track the lead singer actually never wanted to release as a single because he thought it was too obvious. Oddly, the American college stations loved it. Anyway, as British bands go, they are one of the most influential with other musicians, because they were so brilliantly innovative musically and lyrically. They're also my favourite band. Anyway, go back to something like Making Plans for Nigel, and listen to the albums Drums and Wires and Black Sea, which marked the beginning of the big drum sound that engineer Hugh Padgham went on to develop with Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. XTC is a band for people who love music as art and commentary. If you're just looking for pretty melodies and singles you can hum along to, they're not the band for you.

    Love this song. THANK YOU for doing XTC. Their catalog is wide, varied, and BRILLIANT. Andy Partridge, who wrote the song (and sang it) wasn't a big fan of a song because he said you can't have all the complexity you need in a 3-minute pop song. Having said that, I think think he did a remarkable job. He's got a great way with words... and you should definitely check out some of their other incredible work: "Senses Working Overtime," "Mayor Of Simpleton," "Wrapped In Grey," "Harvest Festival," "Love On A Farmboy's Wages," "Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead"... and if you're really feeling adventurous: "COMPLICATED GAME"... which is sledgehammer of a song.

    I am so happy you guys did this song. This wouldve been categorized as "College Rock". In the early 80s new bands would sign up with new record labels then free records would get sent out to college radios stations around the country. College radio wanted to play what main stream radio stations werent playing. If these bands caught on at these stations they would go to main stream radios stations. This is how U2, The B52s, REM and SO MANY other bands got started.

    Love XTC, very underrated, was wondering if you would get to them. Would be labeled as New Wave. Should check out "Making Plans for Nigel,""The Mayor of Simpleton,""Generals and Majors,""Senses Working Overtime," and so many more by them 👍🏼

    Two other great tunes by XTC are The Ballad of Pumpkin Head and the Mayor of Simpleton. For this song you have to realize that XTC is from the UK and in the 80s, religious conflict was a hot topic between Protestants and Catholics. The Catholic church is much more of a controlling world institution in the UK (and Ireland) than in the US, and it is viewed as if it were an oppressive government as opposed to the general view of churches here in the US (like a side gig).

    What I love about this song is, even if you don’t agree with the message, this is an immaculately constructed piece of music. I love everything about how this is put together: the opening chords, the music growing louder as Andy Partridge’s sense of doubt grows larger, the fact that it’s bookended by a child singing. It gives me goosebumps every time.

    I remember yall did '80s/'90s new wave streams this past summer (June) and and another one earlier in the year (Jan/Feb).
    The one in Jan/Feb, some chat member sent a good donation and requested this song, she dedicated to a deceased family member. She was sad that it didn't win a poll. I wonder if she will now see this reaction! lol
    Anyways, XTC is alt rock, punk, new wave, they were an '80s and '90s band. This song is different from most of their stuff. Most of their songs are more punky and more energy. Check out the videos for "Senses Working Overtime", "Making Plans for Nigel" , "General and Majors" and others. They are similar to Talking Heads, Blur, The Las, B-52s, etc

    Guys, XTC was all over the map. And this is a later one and they got more and more complex. But go back to the earlier stuff. They were revolutionary and so important in the music scene. There are just so many and they're all over the map but check out this song, Respectable Street. You'll get a good idea why they hit pretty hard and exploded. It's British; it's really tongue in cheek and hilarious but it's post punk also, so it's kind of up front with the attitude. It's funny as shit and these guys are incredible musicians and they were so tight as a band. They were unflappable.

    This song takes some of it's inspiration from poet/illustrator William Blake who wrote both "The Lamb" and "The Tyger." One stanza of "The Tyger" reads (referring to The Tyger): "When the stars threw down their spears, And water'd heaven with their tears, Did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the Lamb make thee?"
    Another great XTC song is "Peter Pumpkinhead"

    Sarah Mclachlan did a cover of this song on one of her CDs. I used to skip it when I was still a believer in god, when my belief collapsed I had my morning alarm set to play this song for maybe 6 months. It was me holding out for a chance to regain my faith, but that never happened. 25 years have passed and I'm glad it never came back, one of the best things that has happened to me, though at the time it was tough to go through. It was 10 or more years later that I found out it was a cover, because of my first connection to this song, I find I prefer Sarah's version.

    One of the things I like about XTC is that their music sounds to me like '60s folk rock except done in a more modern sound. If The Byrds existed in the '80s instead of the '60s they'd be XTC.
