I love this song and its message. It's resonating even today, some 30+ years later. FTR, I am an anti-theist. This song almost brings me to tears when I think of all those under the spell of religion, believing in an all-knowing, omnipresent and omnipotent entity that will only break their hearts when "prayer" doesn't work. Peace and love to all. And thank you for this review.

As a 12 year old, seeing this video made me realize for the first time that others felt the same way about God as I did; that I wasn't alone.
I didn't know the word atheist, but I identified with every part of this song, every objection.
I'm so grateful to XTC for this song; I really needed it.

Very brave of an American to openly listen to let alone like this song, it caused all sorts of chaos in Florida, bomb threats and knife threats because of this song, which just goes to prove the hypocrisy of religion, A God of peace and love supported by violence, with the full knowledge of leadership of the various divisions, murder in the name of God is like fkn for virginity, totally contrary to the supposed point it's basis.
Anyway thanks for your work 👍

XTC - the Beatles of the 80's. This song still gives me goosebumps after hundreds of listens and learning to play it even. Andy did everything right on this one - words, music, and vocals all just work together perfectly to deliver a powerful message. The rest of the album is good, especially the more pop-ish "Earn Enough for Us" which I thought was a continuation of "Love on a Farmboy's Wages" from the excellent, but under appreciated album, "Mummer". My favorite XTC album though, is still 1982's "English Settlement". So many superb songs on there and it was especially refreshing at the time. Check the hit "Senses Working Overtime" or the excellent opener "Runaways". Some of the other greats on this album includes "Jason and the Argonauts", "Ball and Chain", "Melt the Guns", "No Thugs in Our House", and "Snowman". Thanks for listening and sharing! Keep going with XTC!
    Peace from SF

      Melt the Guns:
      "Children will want them,
      Mothers supply them,
As long as your killers are heroes.
      And all the media
      Will fiddle while Rome burns,
      Acting like modern-time Neros."

In Florida, a Panama City radio station received a bomb threat for airing the song during the height of the hysterical response, in some quarters, to the release of the single. Meanwhile, on the coin’s flipside, a student at Binghamton High School, New York, held a staff member at knifepoint, forcing them to play ‘Dear God’ over the public address system. As this snowball gained mass and momentum, several stations in the US and UK banned the song from airtime, and some shops refused to stock the single.
