@@infin8reactions with XTC, there's more I've noticed as I've gotten older... I used to be into their early pop singles like ''This Is Pop''... and would ignore their latter albums. Now it's the other way around where I've grown into their latter albums. American Psycho's quote on Genesis can also apply to XTC (except that XTC got better).

Hi Lee, great reaction. As an agnostic (a "recovered" Catholic), I love this song and it brings up some valid points and contradictions. I love the line "People fighting in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God". I've tormented my religious sister a couple times with this song. 😁

It starts and ends with a child, because the Books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke all state that you must believe as a child. Stating finally "I don't believe in you", means the childlike innocence is gone.

I love this song, though it came out before I was born. I kind of figured it wouldn't go over well in the US, especially in the 80s, so I looked it up, and... I was right. "The song's anti-religious message inspired some violent incidents. In Florida, a Panama City radio station received a bomb threat for playing the song, and in New York, a Binghamton High School student forced his school to play the song over its public-address system while holding a faculty member at knife-point... Partridge also received a plethora of hate mail, although all of it was from the US." How sad that people are raised from a young age to believe what they're told so hard that anyone who says, "Hey, maybe none of that is true" get met with "I'LL BOMB ANYONE WHO LETS YOU SAY THAT!"

I’m going to go on a little rant here. I love this song. It doesn’t preach nor does it pontificate. But it does ask serious questions. See, I’m not religious nor am I atheist. An atheist has decided that definitely no god exists. A religious person has likely chosen one of the gods and or religions available to choose through. I’m an agnostic.
I’m an agnostic. I don’t pretend to know what the after- death experience will bring. I tend to not concern myself with trivialities that no one has a definitive way of knowing. I focus on here and now. If the living people and other creatures on this planet were equipped to know exactly everything including what happens once we die we’d be insane.
This is why I focus on the better features of humanity. The here and now.

Neil Degrasse Tyson said that “if this world has so much suffering, kids born with cancer, etc, then maybe God isn’t all good, OR maybe God isn’t all powerful”. Something to that effect. It definitely makes you think.

I would explain this song to my Christian friends this way; If he really doesn't believe in God, why is he writing a letter to him? The song may be a desperate plea for God to reveal himself. Like an employee review asking why He should be allowed to keep his job. I am an atheist. I believe in the scientific method. That means that, unlike an inflexible faith in an ancient religion, my beliefs are based on evidence and proof. I also understand that those beliefs are only as good as the knowledge we have at this exact point in time. That knowledge can change each time a new discovery is made, like those first discoveries made by the first telescope or microscope. Might there someday be a technology that allows us to see, to prove or disprove, what we currently attribute to spirituality? Religion and science will both have a choice to make.
