XTC... the Beatles of the 80s... a worm hole you NEED to go down. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant band.
I love this song so much. XTC is up there with THE THE from that period of the 80s in testing the boundaries of their music with every release.
Just great listening always.
*Lyrics* --
Dear God, hope you get the letter, and-
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God
I can't believe in you
Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but-
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your own image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God
I can't believe in you
Did you make disease and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you
And the devil too?
Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but-
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your own image
Still believing that junk is true
Well, I know it ain't so, and you know
Dear God, I can't believe in-
I don't believe in-
I won't believe in Heaven and Hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there, you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in
It's you
Dear God
Haven’t heard in a bit , Love this song when it was on the radio ,love it just as much now.
Nice, Lydia! Top five band for me; though I never much got into this one, but appreciating it a bit more now, as I get a bit longer in the tooth. Their peak for me was their post punk days of Black Sea, English Settlement, Drums & Wires, etc. Cheers Lydia & Rory for breaking the ice on some XTC 🔥
😊
WOW, VERY INTERESTING!! NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF THIS. SO MUCH EMOTIONS AND VERY POWERFUL!! REMIND ME OF TEARS FOR FEARS, MIGHT BE WAYYY OFF! AWESOME REACTION RORY 💙 AND THANK YOU LYDIA FOR THIS INTERESTING REQUEST. AWESOME!! 😊🩷🤘✌️🔥
😊
The lyrics make them think about, as an atheist, I completely understand the lyrics, they're so much true a song very ahead of its time perfectly adjustable to what's happening nowadays. I have heard about this band they were so famous in the 80's and I remember listening to some songs of them, but excellent👏🏻👍👌🤔🤔
Similar vibes in Andy Prieboy's 'Tomorrow Wendy' - just a killer lyricist.
'I told the priest
Don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked
The first time he came down here slumming
He had the balls to come
The gall to die and then forgive us'
Well worth checking out this song, especially with Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde duetting , she is just a one of a kind vocalist.
Thank you Lydia it's a great song!!! ❤
Lydia's requests are always fire! I wish she was my friend.
😊
XTC would have been a giant band, but unfortunately singer Andy Partridge had anxieties about performing in public, so while they did tour a little, they were very much a studio band. They have had some amazing albums, but in my opinion, the best was Drums And Wires which gave us hits like Life Begins at the Hop and Making Plans For Nigel, but also fascinating songs like Helicopter, Roads Girdle The Globe and When You're Near Me. Sometimes I feel there are moments on the album that redefine how guitar and bass should be played. It was released in 1979, and still sound fresh today, 45 years later!
They got completely F'd over by their management and Record Labels, also !
Not true had anxieties about performing live... please get your facts right before commenting.
XTC songs you MUST hear...
Summer's Cauldron/Grass (Must be listened to TOGETHER)
River of Orchids
Frivolous Tonight
Knuckle Down
Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
Generals and Majors
you should also listen to,,,
The Mole from the Ministry and
What in the World from the XTC band under the psyuedonm Dukes of Stratospher
and about 50 other really good songs.
*Rory.* Thanks 😊 A polarizing song...
One key thing to keep in mind about the Bible is that it was written by men, with many editions and translations over the centuries each introducing their own nuances...
As a Catholic teen when this song was released, I felt guilty about appreciating the lyrics.
Now I see a greater distinction btwn organized religion vs faith ...and these lyrics being more about atrocities committed in the name of religion.
love this song love XTC awesome request!
@@Zennofobic Not surprised 😎
Skylarking is such an amazing album, you should do the whole thing
Gidday Rory, I think the word you are searching for is cynical, not sinister. Cheers.
Seriously, Lydia is my soulmate.
😄
try Generals and Majors
When you say that the Bible has been around for so long, you make his point.
" see them fighting in the street, cuz they can't make opinions meet, about God!"
Remember, The Wehrmacht had
" God is with Us " on their belt buckle!
Andy Partridge is a genius but sadly crippled ny stage fright and doesn’t play live
That's a misconception he didn't suffer from stage fright at all... He was a valium addict having been on them since a child and had to get himself off them ...that's the reason he never toured again.
Aware of the valium
I thought he was deprived of his medication and had a breakdown on tour and then stopped touring and couldn’t face playing live ( hence using term stage fright )
I would say cynical is maybe the word Rory?😊❤
