- People are always telling me to do some winter bikepacking. So I thought if I'm gonna do this then let's make it extreme! The Lyngen Alps are tucked away in the high Arctic of Norway. It's one of my favorite places to visit and cycle but that is of course in summer. I had no idea what to expect in winter but as always Norway delivered!

A small cultural note, the tradition of royal portraits in toilets of cabins is because when magazines and newspapers were used as toilet papers, it would irreverent to use portraits of the royals in that fashion, so pictures of the kings and queens were torn out before use, and fastened on the walls.

Thanks Stefan, it was a process of keeping the batteries warm and rotating them to keep the footage going.

Dear Matthew, on my 69th Birthday I have just subscribed because you are not too proud to ride an eBike - I have Yamaha and Bosch and they returned me to joys of cycling after knackering my knees 35 yrs ago after 12 yrs in the military. I first toured Norway red huts in 1970 above Kongsberg - couldn’t believe that you could spend a night in a snow cave (-40’ below outside = -4’C inside - bliss) and then go “next door” and buy a Hot Chocolate - I have had exposure three times - you were so lucky that your brain was still functioning when you arrived at the Finish Campervan - otherwise they would have had to drive you straight to the nearest Hospital - which was where? At 69 these are ? You need answers for when bike packing! Your poem was very fitting - have you published it somewhere? Your scripts are a joy, often poetic - Congratulations on the day you succumb to the temptations of eBiking - would be great to encourage the Tourist Dept to install some bike charging stations at those magic loos - outside, protected and high up at least 2m from the ground to dissuade mobile phone and lap top users from plugging in. what a Fat Bike - now at the top of my bucket list!
Bosch and Yamaha powered bikes ride just like bikes, and you get just as much exercise if you want. People are just wildly uniformed on what a good ebike is. To many throttled scooters on amazon, making everyone think all ebikes are like that. I love my Bosch powered ebike.

I know you put yourself out there with your adventures but this was something else. The images you show will, I am sure, only hint at the spectacular landscapes that you were wandering through. The conditions looked tough but the views were stunning. Thanks for showing those of us who can only dream of such travels.
Welcome Ivor, glad you enjoyed the video. To be honest the conditions were really nice to ride. It was a dry cold which if you wrap up warm doesn't cause too many problems. I just need better shoes next time!

@@matthewnorway about 20 degrees C in Sydney right now. So yes, warmer than Scandinavia!
I’m surprised the bike shop did not outfit you with Bar Mitts or Pogies for the handlebars. Great for keeping your hands frostbite-free. You can also toss a hand warmer into each to keep the fingers toastier. I live in the land of Surly, Salsa, and 45NRTH and love the winter cycling. Camelbak also has insulated tubing to keep your water liquid.

Awesome to see you retracing your steps along Lyngfjorden, albeit in the opposite direction and at the most challenging time of the year! I remember the beautiful valley from Breivikeidet to Nordbotn very well from last summer's trip. It's an amazing contrast to see it in its winter coat. It was a relief to get off the E8 and onto the quiet side road that runs parallel to it along the fjord into Tromsø. Hats off to you for braving it in sub-zero conditions. Great footage and inspiring as always!

@@matthewnorway Hah, yes, and I've inevitably got that to come on a bike as I've only ever walked and wild camped in the Arctic.
Ice fishing in minus 40 was a particularly unlucky weather day but I loved it!

Thanks Rob, Fabikes are certainly slower but on the flats, you can be cruising at a reasonable speed with or without power. Fun to ride!

I was a truck driver, and the hardest work was in the Arctic... and I'm native to the area.
But it is SO BEAUTIFUL, yeap totally agree. The winters are MAGICal (Imo... 🥰)
But Matthew, Seriously! PLZ consider doing some WIM HOF training before doing stunts like this, .... come think about it, even in the socalled "hot" season up here in the Arctic, you'll gain loads by being a HOF'er. 😉 just sayin'
I literally can't breath in ice cold water. I think you have to train yourself to mange such cold temperatures. Any tips?

When you showed the Surly ICT for hire I shouted "Yes!", but then when I saw you on that Ebike my heart sank, "Nooooooo!!!"
Brave man to ride in these conditions, even slightly mad, but not quite as mad as Peyman and Matilda riding heavily loaded touring bikes and camping in the Arctic winter.
Still you got some stunning footage for your video. I should imagine frostbite is a real risk if you expose your flesh to the cold for an instant too long.
Yeah there are some extreme people on YT. Camping in -15oC is really hard as you can't put your tent up with your gloves on. Better to sleep in a bus shelter or something.
What’s wrong with an ebike? Pedal assist mid drives give just as much exercise if you’re trying to ride big miles. Plus in those temps the battery for sure wasn’t giving great miles.

You freeze because of the wind not the minus temperature. I lived in Røros, without the wind the temperature is great, we often used a cardigan 🙂
Well when youy filmed this I was further north than you, not much but a bit I was at Nikkeby on the island of Laukøya :-)
Great video, makes me yearn to return to the area (I've only been back 3 days), but I think I'll save my cycling in Lyngen Alpes for the summer not the winter, chapeau to you for cycling up there i the depths of winter.

@@matthewnorway Just love it up there, summer or winter. Spent a week there and a week north of Alta. It is just a magical area so chilling out, bit of walking around and enjoying nature. Although as Laukøya is only served by a ferry we got cut off from the world during a storm. Aim to be cycling in Troms June/July

I'm surprised your drone and camera lasted long enough for the trip. With the cold it usually zap the batteries on my GoPro
It was a constant battle to keep the batteries warm. I know, annoyingly Gopro's just don't work well in cold weather!

Fantastic video, it really shows the beauty *and* harshness to be experienced in winter time. Hope you get the viewership you deserve in this one. BTW, you mentioned battery issues with the drone in the cold. But I’m curios about the e-bike’s battery. Did that hold its charge well?
It held strong for 90km with one 15 mins charge. Eco mode

I actually turned it off a few times to see what it was like. On the flats, it was surprisingly easy but up a hill, it would be tough going! It lasted 90km in eco mode at -15oC so better than a Tesla! How's the arm - fullyish recovered?
Beautiful 😀…when you research ferry times in Norway do you need to point to point or is there a central webpage (preferably in English) for all of Norway? Hoping to see the West coast Bergen to Bodo and realizing there are a lot of crossings.You seemed to be hustling between cities to catch multiple ferries in your videos.Thanks for all the videos you have put out-super entertaining! You will have to hit Iceland for some bikepacking when you have covered all of Norway.
Unfortunately there is no centralised website site for all ferries in Norway. There are several different companies with their own websites. Most ferries connecting main roads run every 15-30 mins during the day. The more remote ones you may be hanging about an hour or two. Best to find the ferry port on google maps and it should tell you which company operates from there.

Great video, definitely food for thought. We look forward to expanding our horizons from Scottish trips to explore such places. Do you think you would have made the ride back in a day without the E-Bike?
Yes for sure, I didn't really need an e-bike but it certainly made it easier! If the route had a few big climbs then I think an e-bike is a good option in extreme temperatures. You don't want to sweat much as the minute you stop cycling you freeze up.
Did you do something to keep your batteries warm? Even in 20F weather I see a noticeable difference in mileage.
That tail light looks good. Do you have any other recommendations for flashing rear lights over 200 lumen and lasting very long?

Great stuff. How easy was it to find places to charge the e-bike?
Just plan ahead using google maps, I marked out two places where I could charge if required.
Do you have to sing up or something before going on a ferry in norway? or can you just go to a ferry and just drive with it and then go when you arrived without paying like you said in the video? or anything else important in terms of ferrys in norway? cause im going to have about 10 ferry drives in my summer bikepacking trip...
Most car ferries are free for cyclists and don't need to be booked in advance. Passenger only ferries you pay and extra for bike. You only need to booked in advance if it's a busy route that might be full. But I have never seen a full passenger ferry!
