    When you began this season by saying you were giving budget printing a try I bought my first 3d printer, the Anet A8 also. I was very lucky by getting quality prints very early. I've already printed, sanded and finished 2 full sized Destiny props (Dark Drinker and Necrochasm) and 2 more waiting to be finished (Raze Lighter and Hawkmoon). I couldn't have done it without your videos!

    Really cool project! I love the tank trooper helmet. I did a similar build a few years ago for two sets of snowtrooper armor for myself and my brother. I never found a really strong way to glue PLA parts together so I welded them together with a cheap soldering iron. Not the cleanest way to get them to stay together, and it can require a good amount of sanding and cleanup, but it was the strongest.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That'll do! I'll be using my pins and probably super glue or a 5 minute epoxy.

    • @burnsjt22

      The metal pins really are a great idea. I've got a Stormtrooper helmet that I sculpted in Zbrush that I have been meaning to print out so i'm thinking I will give the pins a try on that.

    Hey, I know this is an old post but I'd use a glass bed which offers many benifits. One, you get a smooth bottom finish and two at about 35 degrees Celsius the parts will just pop right off which is probably the biggest benefit.. no more issues with part removal such as scraper needed, breaking/bending a part, or tape coming off. Also at 60 degrees Celsius, parts stick to the bed very well (no glue-sticks or hairspray needed which is the only way you can reliably do an automated print queue that knocks off the prints for you). Best!

  • @StopChangingUsernamesYouTube

    It's probably been suggested by now, but if you ever find it a pain to swap out that blue tape every few prints, there are a couple better options. If you're doing mainly PLA, a tempered glass bed would work well, and can be had for pretty cheap. Though you're usually going to want to put down some hairspray or ABS/acetone slurry for adhesion with other materials. If you want something that sticks amazingly well to most materials but takes a little more care when removing parts, PEI sheets can be found for around $10 and potentially last for hundreds of prints.

      Punished Props, sorry I wasn't clear, just a price comparison of what you added to that machine vs what you can get for the new total. Did your $200 printer really work for $200, or did you add $200+ in time and parts to get that quality.

    Hey Bill, the rough support spots would make good bomb scorching.

  • @Richter3D
    @Richter3D 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Helpful tip for better supports: turn on interface layers. It's like a roof on top of your supports so there's less drooping on the surface of the model. I can get overhangs to look pretty darn good, maybe not top surface good, but better than what you've seen.
    On top of that, setting the air gap, sometimes called "Support Z Distance," to at least 0.4mm, or 2x the layer height if larger than 0.2mm will make supports pop off in one clean chunk. I've removed prints from the bed and the support has stayed behind it's worked that well.
    Happy printing! Looking forward to more progress

    Hi
    Great videos :D love the content :D i have the same printer as you have and did some upgrades too, to make it more stable, but i think you need too tighten you tolerence on bed a bit more
    I have the Autolevel sensor installed on mine and i saw a huge increase in quality just by makeing the bed closer to the nozzle, a4 paper between the nozzle and bed and needs to drag/grip alitle bit that helpt alot for me and got awesome result 🤗 keep up the good work 💪hope this help with the print quality :)

    Looks like the Anet is on the friendly side of ease-of-use. I use a FF creator pro and it rocks with print quality, Buutttt...leveling the build plate sucks. I have to reach underneath, turn the wing nuts, reach back on top, see if it's level, repeat 15x. I know you didn't seem happy with the print quality, but you're gonna make it look amazing. What website did you get it off of? I’m super apprehensive about online shopping which is funny I got into a hobby with an almost exclusively online marketplace. But these videos give me the insight I needed, I got an m3D micro and as my brother put it “ran it like a Chinese sweatshop at Christmas” and it breaks down constantly, so this looks like a worthy supplement. Great video...this has inspired me to do the same - but attempting to create the model from scratch in Fusion360 (as a way to take beginner skills to the next level). One question - how did you model the brim that goes around the helmet from one side of the chin to the other. I considered a loft using rectangles at various points around the helmet, but even with the best reference pictures, I am having a heck of a time getting things lined up where that solution works. Is there an easier way I am missing?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't remember exactly, but it might have been a loft. It took several tries to get it right.

    I don't know if this will help you but to help the sanding process have you considered using acetone? I have tried it and it works great (The acetone "melts" the filament). I apply it to a paper towel and rub the print. It creates a very nice glossy finish, Plus its takes MUCH less time and effort than regular sanding methods. When I do this I like to have an exacto knife or semi-dulled carving tool at hand to keep my clean edges near details. It would help though to get the print relatively smooth (no sign of supports), however I don't do any manual sanding. I simply take off the print from the bed and rub the acetone on without any sort of prep. Hope this helps

    The horizontal stippling you're seeing may not be related to your Z axis. It might be inconsistent extrusion. Measure your filament in multiple places and put the average in the slicer's Filament Diameter setting. If you find it's much more than +- .05 mm variance in your filament, order new/better filament. Another option is that you can decrease your flow rate and border on under-extrusion, or reduce your layer thickness to decrease the effect, though that'll increase print time to a great degree.
    Whatever it is, it looks MUCH more like flow rate variation than Z axis inconsistency, especially since that's a dual motor Z axis you have there.

    Any info on thought process of selecting the type of filament used for your 3d prints (PLA, ABS /w enclosure, PETG, etc.)?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer to print with PLA because it is incredibly forgiving and easy to print with.

    • @duckrutt
      @duckrutt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps, but ABS is easier to finish. Seriously, sanding PLA sucks.

    • @Nilithcal
      @Nilithcal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      duckrutt True, though I'm more worried about PLA's lack of flexibility and low deformation temp so I've moved over to PETG (printed entire Shoretrooper and E-22 blaster in it so far). Ease of print makes sense when compared to some of the pain you can have dialing in other filaments (warping with ABS, stringing with PETG, etc.). I'm interested to see how bonding and reinforcement (if any) of parts goes if they continue to print the whole armor since I'm also working on it as well.

    Do yourself a favor, take those springs off the print bed. Turn it into a fixed height bed, you will be MUCH happier. In fact the quality will go up 10 fold on the a8. The Z wobble brackets are definitely NOT needed. Those rods are supposed to move. As long as the bearing rods are tight the worm rods can flex a bit.

      This video series was made to showcase the ultra low budget Anet A8. I also have an Ultimaker and a Lulzbot mini, both incredible machines. The A8, while incredibly cheap, was a massive pain to use, so I gave it away to a friend.

    I have a Storm trooper helmet and a Royal Guard (red guys that protect the emperor) that I printed out (in ABS) and finished, I was wondering if you would be willing to take them and make some molds for me... the helmets are nice but very fragile... having a mold to do slush casting in would make the copies stronger. (I am willing to pay for the shipping and materials needed to do the job, and of course your time!)

    You know, you wouldn't get any blue tape sticking to your prints if you had a sheet of PEI. :) Just kidding, well not really but hey.... Cool video. I'm currently printing Luke's lightsaber from ROTJ. I should be done sometime this week. Then, I'll have to paint it and make it all pretty.

      The more organic a model needs to be, the better off you are using an application like ZBrush.

    So since the 3D printer has taken off, do you think this will change Cosplay. I guess Cosplay is, any way a person can make something that they love, it doesn't have to be only made out of foam .
