- Despite lagging behind in certain key areas and roughly developing others, Death's Gambit is a relatively enjoyable romp for fans of 2D Souls-like hack and slash. Siradon won't beckon you like Lothric or Yharnam anytime soon but presents some enjoyable sights and sounds otherwise.

I'm 3/4 thru the game and I'm loving it so far. My only wish is that it was longer and had more areas and bosses. Also, Garde Tum is a brilliant twist

*I'd wait to watch this review* Although very well written and produced, it's filled with many "spoilers" in my opinion. I appreciate the detail and depth that was given to this review. It shows the audience that Ravi Sinha actually played Death's Gambit and quite thoroughly, which is very important and extremely beneficial to the consumer. Great review nonetheless.
Stamina is fine. Thats why there is an endurance stat. The “one more fight” feeling is definitely there for me. I def was connected to the characters. Game is def a 9 for me. To each his own. If you think Salt and Sanctuary is top 5 indie games ever made like me... this is a must play. More than worth a “middling playthrough”

It's not a game with longevity, at all. It costs €20 for a reason.
I finally completed the game last night after approximately 10 hrs of playtime. I do think the game is worth buying IF you like souls-like and or metroidvania type of games. The game does have it's shortcomings. Sometimes the frame-rate drops and some people have reported having their save files being corrupted. I personally have never had this problem but others have reported it. The combat can be a little bland at times. Without a light and heavy attack it can feel like your just spamming the same attack over and over. But there are about 3 weapon skills for each weapon which can add a bit of complexity and strategy to the combat system. Overall I do like the combat. The soundtrack is amazing and the story can be weird at times but I found it to be enjoyable. Some of the characters are pretty interesting and I enjoyed learning their backstories. I also liked how you were free to explore the world in any order you wanted and you weren't forced to play things in a particular order which made the game world feel more free.
All in all I do recommend the game despite its shortcomings. It's only $20 and you get a solid 9+ hrs of gameplay depending on your play style, skill level, how much you explore, etc. This doesn't even factor in doing the game with different builds which can add even more hrs into your play time. If you're still not sure if you want to buy this game watch some streams on twitch, youtube, etc and decide for yourself if its worth the investment! As someone who pre ordered the game I wouldn't get it again until more fixes are made. Look on Reddit for all the issues. I stopped playing for now because my light of the traveler aura went missing from my items. The game is good but needs work.
I bought this and beat it fairly quickly. It gave me an itch so i bought salt n sanctuary too. I thought some parts of DG we're infuriating. HA, its easy compared to SnS. My controller is loose after dealing with these 2 games. They're completely worth it tho lol.

I just don't get all of the shade from reviewers of this game. I love SoulsBorne, I loved Salt and Sanctuary. But still, that hasn't got too terribly much to do with me liking this game other than the blatant and comical references to it's own inspirations. This was a pretty solid game and I enjoyed it immensely. I played my first time through as an acolyte of death just because scythes are spiffy and I had a blast. There was no trouble finding where to go or not being engaged in the story. Granted, I figured out the story fairly quickly from the cut scenes with death, but I still had a great time and give it a solid 8/10 not only for the story but for the tight gameplay, art direction, and score. Just buy the game, play it, and decide for yourself. I think it was $20 well spent.
I agree with most of your points but would say footage of the bosses is spoiler territory. Since I can't see what it has going for it other than appreciating the art.

Salt and Sanctuary is a really good twist on a 2D soulslike game. One of the only games I've 100% aside from the souls series itself

I think deaths gambit does almost everything well except the length of the game but that will probaply be fixed within the upcoming dlc

I beat this game with all heroic bosses an in my opinion it is too hard with heroic bosses feeling broken and unbeatable but I loved the world and story the combat can be good depending on what weapons you use with classes like the blood knight and acolyte of death

I thought it was great for an Indie Souls for $15-20. I think it has a few bugs and needs a little more polish but I give it an 8/10 and a definite good time for Souls fans hungering for more. Not quite Salt & Sanctuary good but still really fun. Oh and the boss fights were excellent and felt very creative.
This game is kind a trash, sooooo many issues. Play dead cells instead or salt and sanctuary both do everything this game tries to do but actually pull it off.
Heroic bosses were dissappointing for me! When i heard that there was a heroic rematch option where you fight harder versions of each boss, i was so excited because i thought they would be harder but also fair! THEY WERE NOT FAIR! Not even fucking close! They were cheap and lazy as fuck! I've beaten all but two of them by the way, i think you should know that before telling me to git gud or something!Ones i didn't beat are Eldritch and Endless! I will beat Endless eventually but Eldritch!No!Just no! Fuck the developer who designed that stupid boss!
Edit: Nvm! Just beat Eldritch :D But my points still stand! It's a terrible boss and it should be just scrapped or changed a little bit to be a tiny bit more fair to the player.Like they can just remove the blood rising when the boss comes down or make it two times slower! And they can remove that stupid projectile spam of the guy that spawns when the first crystal on the right destroyed! Won't make the fight a masterpiece( there is a LOOONNG way to go for that) but at least would make it possible to beat her without going out of your way to actually farm levels and gather as much strength as possible to stand a chance!

For me this is the best soul like game we've had so far. The others just don't capture souls essence.

But there is no stamina system in or level system in hollow knight.
The story is told in a souls like fashion. Using environmental story telling, item descriptions, and narrative given by NPC’s.
Deaths gambit on the other hand has all the levels of a souls like, has a stamina system roll mechanic shielding parrying shield kicks. What makes a metroidvania what it is would be the constant acquisition of new abilities/tools to help you either in fights or exploration throughout the world. Deaths gambit has a whopping zero of that.

Wow- this review is disappointing for a 2D pixel art game that has been in development for three years.
It's a bad review from a person that doesn't like the genre.
I see that a lot of people is not happy with this game.
The main complaints that I have heard so far are:
-The game is not hard enough.
-You use one weapon the entire game.
-Stamina bar limits momentum too much.
-A lot of content showed in the trailer didn't make it to the final game (just like hyper light drifter)
I think the game is challenging and hard but it do not reach the levels or trolling that the souls games offer at least not the regular boss fights (not sure about the heroics). This is something that seems to be bad for the souls players but for me its ok.
You can switch weapons but they all feel almost the same, the stamina bar limits way too much your attacks. I have never liked stamina bars specially when you limit the amount of time a character can attack. I know that this is souls inspired, they wanted the stamina bar to be in but if they were going to add it at least use it just for blocks and dodges but not for attacks.
Like hyper light drifter in previous trailers you can see a lot of content that was removed from the final version of the game and this is really disappointing.
Death's Gambit is still a candidate for indie game of the year in my opinion along with Bloodstained Curse of the Moon, The Messenger and Dragon Marked for Death.
NeoKurow Some challenges (trophies and mortal run) and some heroic battles are INSANE. Galaxy Asshole and Endless Heroic Rematch are just soul crushing. I doubt anyone who said it was too easy did any of this.
@@paledrake Amulvaro was crushing and not FUCKING ELDBITCH? Amulvaro heroic is my favourite boss in the game and once you practice it enough, he will be your favourite too! He is insane but not BULLSHIT and broken like Eldritch!
@@nicecoat5004 I don't dislike the fights, they're amazing! Amulvaro got a lot more doable for me after his Space Squid nerf, haven't tried beating Heroic Endless yet though. Amulvaro is probably my favorite fight out of all the bosses yet, hopfully the DLC will add some more amazing bosses.
@@paledrake Well, i wouldn't try if i were you, Endless heroic is insane! I beat Eldritch by using Leaf of gaia like 7 of them but Endless is almost impossible because the fight takes too long an its almost impossible to not get hit while doing damage!
And btw, could you tell me about the space squid nerf? What was it like before? It is already an annoyance because it almost one shots me when it connects how could it be worse?
nicecoat5004 There are orbs that produce a red line in the Amulvaro fight that can be used to kill the Squids. Before it only lasted 1 second, now it lasts like 5 seconds which gives you plenty of time to kill them with it.
Pixel art is beautiful but the game's artwork is really good, makes you think how the game would look like with an engine like this.

This game feels like an inferior version of Dead Cells.
This game has more character progression/story. Dead cells sets you back to the starting point after you die (Rouge like)
