    The 60mm 2.4 is the most underrated lens by Fuji. That lens is 🔥

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No doubt. Mine gets used a lot!

  • @AndrewGoodCamera
    @AndrewGoodCamera 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Totally agree. I compared the speed of focus between that 60mm and other portrait lenses and the difference was nearly insignificant. Everyone said it was slow to focus, but on modern Fuji bodies, I just couldn't see it.

  • @lefthandright01
    @lefthandright01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You completely missed the most valuable knowledge of these lens out.
    These three were designed by a separate fuji team. They had a design brief fuji that these three had to have a,"Magic touch." and be "perfectly imperfect." They didn't focus on MTF scores..just on contrast and fidelity. To achieve it, they made the A.L.M system. The downside was that because all the len elements move when focusing, its a bit slower and noisy. That was the trade off.
    It still irks to see people complain about these lenses. They work exactly how they were intended. To update them is to ruin them.

    Loving your passion for the OG line-up. I've often wanted re-reviews of older gear after firmware updates and newer bodies. Was hoping you would have had some footage of focus speed and performance on the newer camera.

    Excellent video DB. The original trio are still my working lenses today married to the impeccable X-pro 1. Really, they are all you need. Learn to use their full potential and they will reward you.

    The 60mm is a terrific lens, yes it's slow in "macro mode" but in normal distances it's fairly quick and it can deliver fantastic images with lots of Fuji magic. I am 56mm f1.2 owner as well and in some cases I prefer the 60mm.

    I love my 60mm, always a little stumped as to why it gets trashed so badly. Renders really nice portraits. I was aware of the macro limitations before I picked it up ($280 on ebay) but have actually been pleasantly surprised by that function. It's just a fun little extra on a great portrait lens...

    Fully agree, even in 2022. In the past two years I'll tried almost all Fuji prime lenses and the only keepers are these three lenses in my bag. They all got style, at least for my way of shooting. No need for those fancy new lenses. Thank you very much for pointing out these lenses and wishing you all the best. Kind regards Michael

    I love the 18, and I’ve got the 16 (and a lot of others). I recently made the mistake of leaving it behind on a trip to Columbia. 16 was often too wide and the 18 would have been perfect.

      What body are you using? I'm using X-E3 and planing to get 18 f2, not sure if it's going to be faster (focus) than the older bodies.

    Hey Damian,
    What a fabulous video. Keep up the good work. What! I mean great work. Yes, I got the 18mm with my X-Pro 1 back when the excitement was palpable. And for years I shot with it. I moved in, out, up, down, way up and way around and this little fella did it all for me. After years of 50mm I am now hooked on 28mm. I use it most now. The real 28mm not the Hollywood which is really around 42mm or so. I hear the 28 being bandied about as the Hollywood and yes it is on a crop sensor. But, then is it a 28? O.K. enough about that. If one wants the Hollywood then get the 27mm and now you have a Hollywood 42mm and a pancake lens. I think I am right about this. Please let me know if I have got it wrong. I know nothing about video. That’s why I have the D3, D700 and the DF and dream about an M10. I want nothing to do with video. Anyway I have the 18, the 27 and the 35mm f1.4 and I adore them all. I have been trying to find another lens for my X-Pro 1 (yes, I still have it and love it). And recently bought the XE-2S. and I do not want to go above say 75mm and I use my Zeiss 50mm f1.5 for that. As a film shooter for years I never hurried then and don’t now. You take your time as above and get the shot in camera and move on. Thank You for your common sense video. You are a Star. Please let me know if there is a 50mm auto focus that may work better. I have been looking at the Zeiss 32mm? for Fuji? I believe these Leica like bodies should not have a giant lens hanging off of the end. I suppose the newer DSLRs type little Fuji’s work better for that. Cheers’s.

    Our friend AP says the 60 is actually a better portrait lens than the 56 - unless you're of the school that wants only the pupil and not the eyelash in focus.....;-)

    I had the 18mm years ago that I created some magical photographs on the X-Pro 1 and X-E2. I decided to try out the X100 series and sold the lens...I’m still regretting doing so. Now that I recently purchased the X-T2, I am in the market to buy another 18mm as a permanent glass in my collection. Awesome insight!!!!

      Hmmmm depends how up to date you want to go. The T5 could be a great shout but if you don't need to spend the top price, the T4 or if you don't need IBIS, T3? It also depends what style you prefer, maybe H or Pro?

  • @gerben4875

    I got these three lenses with my xp3 and think they are awesome. I like the styling and rendering better then the fujicrons. Autofocus is good enough with my xp3 even the 60 when turning the focus limiter on (so that it doesnt rack through al focus distances when focusing)

    LOL “respect the legacy” :) In all honesty, the 35 and 60 are the only lenses I use on portrait/engagement shoots. Only for actual weddings do I bring out the 16-55. The 60 is perfect for me and if I ever have to replace it, I don’t think I’d “step up” to the 56, i think I’ll just buy another second-hand 60. Great video bro

    I sold off the 35mm 1.4 and 18mm 2. I couldn’t live with the annoying focus noises and slower focus. I find the 35mm f/2 superior. And my 16mm f/1.4 completely demolished the 18mm.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't argue with the quality of those lenses to be fair. Love the 16 too but really appreciate the size of the 18

  • @tamilhoward9708
    @tamilhoward9708 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have the 18 and the 35 and they are good lenses. Picked 'em up used. I'd rather have these than spend a ton of money on so called "Art" lenses.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ye can't beat the originals, unless you really must have the smoothest, weather resistant, lenses.. these are just fine and have some real nice quality to them.

      @tamilhoward9708 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damian, I finally received my X-T3 and popped the 35mm f1.4 on latest firmware for lens and body and it was super snappy to focus. So these lenses still have plenty of life in them.

  • @henrysiegertsz8204
    @henrysiegertsz8204 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Speed of focus is an irrelevance for almost 99% of photography. FFS what did the worlds best photogs do before autofocus? Arguably, they took better photographs! I love my 35mm 1.4, it clunks and chunters but never disappoints, the 18mm is parked on the second body, for the money it is still a remarkable little lens. Another entertaining vid Damian, I swear each is better than the last!

  • @teashea1

    good try on talking up the 18 but it has the reputation it deserves - slow clunky AF ======== fair image quality - time way past for an update from Fuji

    • @superash82
      @superash82 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thomas Shea the 18mm is one of my favourite lenses. If you use it correctly it creates unique photos that the newer lenses don’t do. It’s designed as a wide angle portrait lens, so when shot wide open, the corners are soft to isolate the subject better. Just stop it down to sharpen the corners up. It’s a lot like a vintage lens and I feel designed that way. I have the 35 f2 and just find that lens too sterile

    • @teashea1
      @teashea1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like sharp lenses. The 18 has the worst IQ of any Fuji lens. I do not want to have to stop down to have acceptable sharpness. Hopefully they will come out with the 18 mk II soon.

    • @foreigncreep92
      @foreigncreep92 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fell in love with my 18, you need to be aware of its limitation to make it shine. I don’t use it much for landscapes. The focal length is my favourite and it creates amazing environmental portraits, how it renders images is quite unique and a lot of times prefer it to my 16 1.4.
