Bioshock Comparison: Original vs. Remastered (The Collection) HD

  • I make a graphical comparison of the original Bioshock 1 & 2 from 2007 & 2010 with their current remastered counterparts of "Bioshock - The Collection" from in HD.
    I play the PC versions, so the difference may not be that obvious in comparison to the original console versions which had lower resolution textures.
    In some instances I think the original version is better... more detailed textures, for example the handrail of the stairs at the beginning of Bioshock 2, more atmospheric lighting...

    You can update the textures all you want, but it's the art style and atmosphere of Bioshock that cements it as a beautiful game.

      Both 1 and 2 remastered run on a newer modified Unreal 3 engine, not the older modified Unreal 2.5 engine.

      the difference isn't just about the graphics: you get all three games, the DLC of all the games (and you don't have to download the DLC or pay for it..it comes included) and there are loads of extras like the Museum about how Bioshock series was made...and there are several audio diaries that only exist in the remastered edition (if you can find them). also you get weapon perks and upgrades in Infinite. the only slight issue is that some moron placed Bioshock 1 and 2 on the same disc in the PS4 version...so you can only have save files on ONE of the games...not both. so you have to delete your save files from B1 to play B2 or vice versa.

      There is huge difference on consoles in the form of 60 frames. Package already worth for that alone, sea weeds and and other small enhancements are only bonus. For PC it is not much to write home about if you already own whole trilogy and all DLCs.
      So basically on consoles worth it, on PC only if you dont own games and DLC.

      1.Is guy not guys. 2.Everyone is entitled to his own opinion. 3.You don't have to be all sarcastic about it.
      There are far better remastered games out there: The Last of us, Uncharted Collection. Even Metro and TombRaider were ok-ish.
      At least Tomi Valkonen made a good point stating the difference between remastered PC and PS4. And I can agree to that. At least for someone who didn;t play them back in the day. But for me, that I already did, and after I saw this clip, not much of a difference.
      But then again, maybe is because I have "no eyes". And maybe the majority of the comments in here don't have it either, because they say the same thing. Or the recent articles out there that write what a big disappointment this is. In the visual aspect of the game. Not to mention all the technical issues the PC release got.

    I've seen some comments saying they're is nothing changed or some arguing that nothing is changed in Bioshock 2, but marginal things have been done in the first one;
    Based on what I've seen, Bioshock 1 does look allot better, from better textures, increased physics and additional Vegetation and basically sea stuff, its not the biggest re-texture I've seen however, but I think it looks allot better, from more sea life when you enter Rapture to the rust you can see on Big daddies.
    Bioshock 2 is allot harder to see a difference, but side by side you can still see the difference to a degree; Mainly I see lighting changes which have a better level of shading in proportion to objects in the environment where as before it looked like lights were static, some slight texture changes that add more levels of detail and what looks like a minor improvement on water, though I imagine there is also a physics boost as seen in the 1st game's remaster.
    Not the biggest or best remaster I have seen, but I think it certainly looks better for it, I've seen a fair few "Looks better but ruins the original atmosphere" posts also, which is laughable, the atmosphere is way better now, just look at the opening in Bioshock 1 with all the new vegetation and tell me it looks worse or has lost its luster;
    In Summary, Wait till they patch the things people want added, FOV, Lighting etc; And then its a good pick up.

    • @TheCutRat

      I completely agree with you in the first game but for Bioshock 2 the version originally released looks better in some places (If you pause at 16:06 the machine looks more detailed)

    • @CraigTheJOKR
      @CraigTheJOKR 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +LazzarClips Kinda, personally I see a lilttle more dirt and rust from the look of it, at the top of the Machine, but if you go to 16:00 and pause (Try to pause in the first few frames where light is directly on the machine) you see for the whole the machine looks better I.E more detailed rust and metalwork, you also see less dirt here as well; I think this machine if not all of them were just changed to be less dirty, which kinda makes sense considering some crazy Splicers make alters out of some of them.
      As for 16:06 it seems the top middle part where the machine name is displayed looks the same as does the curved part, only the white bit actually looks different, which feeds back into the part you can see at 16:00.

    TH-cam doesn't really do these kind of videos justice. If there was a way to see it in person I think the improvements would be more clear. I could be wrong about that but from the eye test every game looks worse on youtube than in person

    • @GameIntrosFinales
      @GameIntrosFinales  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, in a way you are right: TH-cam has a bitrate cap of 12000 for 1080p videos so if I capture in 20-30000 or above and Yt compresses it, it gets very blocky, especially with fast movements and particle effects like smoke. When I compress it in my video editing program, before uploading, to a value under 12000 it is blocky, too. That's why I'm using still pictures to show some differences. - In the case of Bioshock: if you play it there are some aspects that are worse in the remake and some aspects are better. If you look at my Call of Duty Comparison sometimes the remake looks worse although it was better while playing, and that is due to TH-cam's compression. But always look at the stills, they show the real differences.

    10:05 always kills me…notice the metallic looking textures on the arch-like glass supports in the original, and you can see they have been removed in the remaster. However, once the player traverses the plane tail, those textures are back in the remaster-so they removed those textures for half the bridge. Why? You can even see them farther down the hallway as the plane hits.

    It gives you a good idea of what to expect, especially the 1st example (the original Bioshock) had clearly better textures in the remastered version, so that will be the one I'm going to install.
    As for Bioshock 2, I couldn't see any difference whatsoever while Bioshock Infinite (I assume that was the 3rd example, yes?) seemed somewhat inconsistent. I'll probably go with the remastered version although there were some examples where the original IMO was better (see f.ex. 16:29, the candles and the door in the background).

    • @GrizzV991

      graphically its sharper, while sacrificing many important things. in the bioshock 1 segment where the tail of the plane crashed through the pipe, watch when he goes down the stairs and looks at the bulkhead bursting....
      in 1 theres an animation where the water shoots out, in the remaster it appears in full with no animation, this happens many times in the remaster
      in 1 where a big daddy smashes a guys head through some glass, there is an animation, you see glass fall from the position it should fall from, in the remaster the glass disappears and Glass Gibs appear. lots of corners get cut and the overall immersion is ruined, the lighting in much of the remaster is white while the lighting in the original is yellow.
      Bioshock 1 looked excellent for its time because of deliberate decisions that took a lot of these sorts of things into account. the remaster looks worse because of lazy decisions that show no passion or sense of atmosphere

    For everyone saying that there wasn't much of a change in the remaster, I think that the devil is really in the details, This remaster really gave the game an extra bit of polish. For an idea for what I'm talking about, let's pause at 9:10
    The pipe the splicer is holding in the original looks flat and almost completely smooth, like a peice of PVC pipe painted grey, and the splicers clothes look really...plastic-y. like an action figure. The texture and reflections on the pipe in the remaster give it a more rough, metallic look that you would expect from a cannibalized industrial pipe. And while the splicer's clothes still look a bit off (unfortunately, until we can run accurate cloth simulations as part of our normal graphics, we'll probably never get clothes quite right.) they definitely have less of that odd sheen in the original.
    That, and many of the models really were improved on. Look at anywhere with a lot of curved surfaces, and it's night and day. Exhibit A, the statue at 4:11
    Exhibit B, the spider splicer's hooks at 5:35 and 5:43
    Exhibit C, Jack's fingertips at 8:12
    Do you want more? 'cause I can get more.
    There's also a clear improvement in framereate.
    That said, what's the deal with 2's remaster? I really can't see a difference. was there an error editing the video or something?

  • @lunestiacrescent827
    @lunestiacrescent827 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure which one I like better. Personally I prefer the original seat and wallet textures at 0:27 but the remastered smoke and sweater are really nice. Not sure who's fire/water is better but the original lighting at 2:09 is spot on, gives a lovely sense of foreboding! 2:17 shows off the slick sea saturated stone much better in the original, remastered is just TOO DANG CLEAN. 2:22 shows good detail in the remastered but the oxidization in the original is much better. The remastered textures at 2:33-2:39 and 2:53-3:46 are really good. I like the added sea life sort of growing over/around the city and the grit meshes well with the new details in the remastereds floating sequence. 5:08-6:30 (and everything else after, really) shows the rift between the remastered detail and the original lighting; the detail is great but the remastered lighting kinda kills the mood. The point is that you aren't supposed to see everything and know exactly what you're getting into. The grit goes back and forth at this point and if I gave examples on everything we'd be here all day but 9:10 the splicers dirty clothes and 9:43 the Little Sisters dress and Big Daddys drill grime is MUCH better in the original, you can't expect him to wash her laundry!
    I almost couldn't tell between the beginnings of Bioshock 2; but again at 14:58 the details are much better in remastered and at 15:13 the grime is better in the original. At 15:48 the remastered guy's clothes are too clean and the bright lighting of 16:35 throws off the mood. The remastered even took out the roughness and chips from his drill at the very end 16:45!
    They just made the new versions too clean. This place is supposed to be festering in its own rot and bile, not just looking like the janitors got a little lazy. ~SIGH~ I have spent WAY too much time on this!
    TL:DR - It is hard to pick and the remastered could have been done much better.

    In Bioshock, I do see a lot more detail and a lot of additional touches as well as some full changes overall. Bioshock 2 I don't see as much change to it aside from some newer enemy models, some better textures on a few things, but not as heavily as the first Bioshock's remaster. Though to be fair, the first Bioshock is an older game compared to Bioshock 2, and even when B2 was first released, it was a huge graphical improvement over the first game as it was.

    You know. in bioshock 2007 they couldn't make a model of each character (Atlas, Tennebaun, Peach, Steinman, or the Doctor in Arcadia) so they used the splicers models
    9 years later when he already saw Tennebaun, Atlas models, in remastered STILL used the splicers.

    Anyone else notice that the Gatherer's Garden Adam containers (the ones you can see inside the machine) are just a 2d texture? I've played both versions and I only noticed on my remastered play through. I have no idea how much pressure these artists were under, but I've got to imagine they could have taken the time to copy and paste an existing model (updated or not) and throw it in there.
    Maybe it's just a minor detail, but you see these things all over the place, I feel like it would make sense to focus on elements you see over and over again, this is the same reason why they spend a lot more time and hardware overhead on the models and textures for the hud, your arms, any weapons or equipment you can see - BECAUSE you're seeing it all the time. I guess it's not that big of a deal, just seems like an odd thing to skip. Who knows though, it's possible they weren't given much time.
    This seems to be indicative of the kind of studio they're running though, they make these amazing games but they don't seem to care about anything other than money. I know, I know, they're a business, they're in this business to make money, but seriously, WTF - they had this amazing studio, they had all this talent; They put together one of the best games (IMHO) of all time in Bioshock Infinite, and then they turn around and FIRE just about everyone involved with the project. I could be wrong but it seemed like they didn't give them any warning whatsoever. These people got them where they were, they put that game on the map and they just threw them away like garbage. Maybe it wasn't like that but that's how it comes off.
    I know some people will say that's way AAA games work, you hire a core team to focus on the important elements, then hire a bunch of less experienced people to fill out the rest of the game assets. I get that - but there's an easier way to do that, it happens all the time in the game industry and it DOESN'T involve hiring people and then surprise firing them when they can be dispensed with. It's called CONTRACT EMPLOYEES. Or hell, here's a SHOCKING THOUGHT, why not just hire them like normal and tell them before they take the job that they will ONLY be around while this ONE game is being made. Problem fucking solved. No one needs to freak out, no one needs to have to wonder where their next paycheck is coming from. But a lot of companies (possibly even Irrational) WON'T do that. Why? Because they think it will distract their employees. You know, all that pesky time consuming stuff like putting together a portfolio. Talking to people off hours so they can make sure they get a few references. Putting money away for cobra payments so their kids won't be without health insurance. Why allow that when you can straight up lie to them. This is the kind of shit that is destroying AAA game companies, the same reason why indie studios are bigger than ever, because at least some of them are built on mutual loyalty, trying to build something together rather than lying to their faces. These companies are finally getting what they deserve, and I hope every one of these money grubbing bastards gets what they deserve.
    To be clear here, I'm sure there are large studios out there that actually give a damn about their employees, and hey, more power to them. It just feels like they're getting fewer and farther between and that's a shame because there is so much potential out there, so many hugely ambitious games out there I may never see because of all this.
    Well that kind of got away from me... in any case... yeah, how about those 2D textures? WTF right? ;)

    I think most of you don't know what to look for in the comparison, which is why you think the remaster *looks worse*. Not only did you miss several new (adjusted) animations (like the cigarette-holding hand), new textures (aside from existing textures redesigned like the wooden floors), and proper lighting, but you also missed how the "shaders" look more correct now.
    I'm guessing most of you were expecting this remaster to be on par with Majora's Mask compared to N64/3DS in terms of extra detail. If that is the case, the game wouldn't be at 60FPS with less loading times.

    Bioshock Remastered seems to add cross-hatched wear lines, like an additional template put over every sepia picture. Either that or they make likes that were there but very faint no longer faint. Distracting, even. But then it makes improvements that are quite welcome, especially the sea life which makes me think that they could actually eat food down there. I remember playing the original on a gaming laptop I had with a really good 17" 1080p HD screen that made it look unreal and so crisp. I swear it looked like real water and real bricks to the building at the time. Most games now are made to look cartoony and not even real. The remake to me looks like it's more cartoony and less realistic with added things. I think I will stick with playing the original one. I will find a way in the files to make it go higher than 1080p if I have to and it will look better anyways. Basically that is all the new one adds so if you don't know how to tweak the resolution then maybe the remaster one will be for you.

      Comrade Hatuey Yep they're missing many bits of specular lighting in the remastered version.

    The best news is that physics frame rate is lifted. I tried playing Bio again just before this RM...I completely forgot how console hardware limited that game feels.

      Ronnie Neill They're both great, new content, better optimization, slightly more refined graphics for LL and a massive boost in graphics for 2033, oh and not to mention more immersive gameplay than both of the originals provided.
      Meanwhile for Bioshock Remastered.
      *Crickets*
      A massive shame, Bioshock is one of the greatest franchises in the 21st century and the chance for a redux was wanted by all and all we got was a complete mess.

      It's a shame Ken and Irrational didn't get more input. Still, if it brings the games to newer consoles and more people I don't see the point in complaining.

      ***** I suppose, it's just a shame that it was a purely wasted opportunity, Bioshock 1 and 2 with Infinite's engine and style would've been beautiful, also the PC version is complete trash...Again. But if the PS4 and Xbone peeps get introduced or reacquainted with such an amazing line of games, well, good for them!

    Played this already. I really like the look of the 2016 version. More vivid sea life during the descent. They got rid of the Thuggish Splicer's bulge after the initial plasmid injection. That didn't need to happen. There were some creepier moments in later levels that didn't appear in the original. I really liked the film reels hidden throughout the game.

    This is a late comment hell I don't even know why I watched this video. I played the originals and the collection and love them both. Fuck all the hate on that shit, I love bioshock the collection no matter how different it really is from the originals. Anyway I also want to say that if you consider this the worst remaster, then you obviously haven't seen or played other remasters. Also I love every game in the bioshock collection, even bioshock 2. Fuck all of you haters on bioshock 2, and the collection. If you haven't played bioshock before, the collection is the perfect place to get back and play them. Plus if you already played the Original bioshock games, then this is definitely worth revisiting those memories.

    I’m going to play Devil’s advocate and say that the ‘lighting’ in original Bioshock 1 looks better in certain areas is because a lot of surfaces are incredibly reflective. You can see in the comparison that even rocks, rubble and concrete are highly reflective, even though realistically speaking, they have rough surfaces and shouldn’t reflect that much light. Now since beauty is subjective, I can’t say whether toning down reflective surfaces is good or bad, but it is definitely more realistic to have them toned down.
    What I can say with certainty is that the opening scene of Rapture is definitely more improved in the remaster, simply because they added much needed marine life (corals, plants, jellyfish), while keeping the overall tone the same as the original.

    That's a great attempt of refreshing Bioshock...but it's obviously notv PC friendly:
    -Can just toggle Anti alias, Verttical Sync, Anisotropy on/off, that's all for the graphical options.
    -Not every Resolutions are displayable.
    -Default settings are Controller..... SERIOUSLY !!!!!!!!!!!
    -Mouse sentivity cannot be set precisely, so for me it's too fast or too slow as an exemple.
    -Sound is 3D, so if you just have stereo sound system, you are to play with a headphone or sound location is screwed.
    -Key config sucks

    • @BlazeyKio

      A) IT'S A REMASTER THAT YOU GET FOR FREE. IF YOUR PC CAN'T HANDLE THE TEXTURES, WHY ARE YOU PLAYING THE FUCKING REMASTER?!?!?!!
      People bitch that you can't toggle the other settings down or up, in the remaster.
      iF YOU CAN'T RUN THE GAME ON THOSE SETTINGS PLAY THE ORIGINAL. wHY WOULD YOU WANT TO TURN OFF CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE GAME WHEN IT'S REMASTERED TO LOOK BETTER? Fucking hell.
      B) There's patches being worked on and released, they didn't anticipate it not to work
      C) Sorry mate, does it really matter? You can still use mouse and keyboard to disable the controls in the game, so you're just being a lazy bitch. Also C) Continued here, it's not default? At least not for me. And I actually PLAY with a controller
      D) Yeah the sound is fucked I give you that
      E) Key config was not changed at all and works perfectly fine, I've no idea what you're bitching about there.

      @BlazeyKio 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      overdonenames Im not fanboying, im just getting mad at allot of people bitching about you can't turn down the settings in a remaster.
      If your PC can't handle the damn thing, why do it. I'd say this about every game that's been remastered, there's literally NO reason to have graphical settings in a remaster. Because if you turn down the settings, then why not just play the original? Which will probably run smoother and faster anyways because of the millions of bugs in the current remaster.
      Such as audio issues (The ingame audio slider doesn't work) Your arm clips through your screen with expanded FOV and it is prone to crashes after you play it for a long period of time (Every 2-3 hours, you'll get a crash.)

    • @overdonenames

    The world looks bigger in the remaster. From 7:41 to 7:55 I see that the staircase seems thinner and longer, the "welcome to rapture" sign seems smaller and farther away, and the gatherers garden seems farther away.

    I think the Remastered version looks more washed out. On my system, the original looks better in every area, except the cutscenes. And if you turn on subtitles, the Remaster has a clearer font.
    All in all, not much of an upgrade for PC users. I could see how this would benefit the console users though, if they're willing to shell out $60.

    The intro was changed slightly to account for the hijacking twist I think. In the original the plane itself shakes violently whereas in the remaster Jack is almost seen standing up
