Thank you Peachy for the little feature of our game Novus Malum at 1:52:46; much appreciated! So glad you had Max on the podcast; who knew your week could be greatly improved by listening to various conversations about root vegetables!
If you had told me to imagine the man behind Turnip28, with no prior knowledge aside from the game itself, I think I would have pictured someone very close to Max. Of course he has a magnificent moustache and a fine waistcoat. There could be no other way.
Buckfast is brewed just down the road from my cousins in Devon. Its bottles are found in two distinct places. The back of drinks cupboards in Devon, and then smashed in great numbers on the railway lines under bridges in and around Glasgow. There are sections of the Scottish railway which are paved with broken green glass, golden bottle caps and faded yellow labels. Its legendary
I did the subcrawl a few years ago with a friend from Glasgow, and one of our challenges while we were moving around the city was to shout out bucky bottles.. needless to say we gave up after a while..
Buckfast is the love child of Jagermeister and Wine - blessed with caffeine and 15% - brewed by monks of Devon and has the best common catch line - ‘Buckfast gets you F*cked Fast’
AKA 'Wreck the Hoose Juice' because it has that great combo of getting you drunk enough to make very bad decisions whilst having enough caffeine in it to really energize the chaos.
the first time i drank buckfast i ended up in a bare knuckle fight with my best friend outside st. paul's in brum. i was being a funny fucker until i accidently knocked his kebab clean out of his hand and he went feral. we both took the tram home together and cried, my mate realised he lost his keys and i left mine inside. we ended up sleeping outside mecca bingo, spooning to keep each other warm. it's the kind of drink where you open the bottle and all you can smell is vinegar. it takes like flat cherry cola mixed with benadryl. you take a sip and it's nice, until you swallow it. before you know it the bottle is gone and you're hanging from the ceiling. the trick is to drink enough so that when you inevitably fall down the stairs you can no longer feel it anymore. it puts you in a bizarre intoxication where you are very fucked up but also very aware and energetic. liquid speed. please drink responsibly! it's hella fun to look back on, but it could have ended a lot worse if we were the type of people to pick fights with strangers.
Watching Rob try to scrape a functional, orderly interview out of the guest every episode is a beautiful reflection of every conversation I have ever had in a room full of neurotypical folks, like an alternate universe where neurotypical and neurodiverse are flipped. I may be biased, but it seems more fun overall.
Max is fantastic- really enjoyed this episode - generally really loving all the Boutique Gaming (TM) content. Juggz is my absolute favourite thing on the internet currently- thank you all for being such glorious little crazy people. ❤
If the past episode was "Sugs self-diagnoses her childhood ADHD," this episode is "Rob learns to not challenge ADHD hyperfocus rabbitholes" while outnumbered 3 to 1.
Just 15 mins in and already a little anxious that this is going to be over too quickly... Juggz is easily my favourite parasocial friendship simulator ❤ thank you, lovely people. PS I'm definitely a Dave, there's every chance I would've eaten poisonous Peruvian potatoes just to see if they were delicious
Rob love that you’ve been putting out so much AOS content, but I didn’t realize I was missing your Juggz until you put out a new episode! Keep all the great work everyone!
Will you PRETTY PLEASE check your audio podcast feed? New episodes still aren't getting pushed out on Spotify. Episode 8 is the last audio podcast of Juggz released. Thank you!
I made up a very complicated and probably unsave setup on my painting place to be able to watch the Video while painting because the audio version was not available yet. 😅 I love your show and just could not wait.
My head canon is that the Silver Bayonet setting leads directly to the outcome of Turnip28 and that they share a universe and a timeline. And this makes me very happy
PSA for kopi luwak (the poo coffee): most of it is battery farmed where civets (the cats) are kept in cages and force fed coffee cherries. Quite outrageous for debatable flavour gains. Great video on it here: th-cam.com/video/pkbuFwHnJQY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Oz4VGKblaC0TfhIh And here is the wiki en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_luwak
Funnily enough it actually used to be much better back in the colonial days as the Civet would eat only the ripest fruit and their stomach acids cleaned the beans better than the cleaning tech at the time. But yes, nowadays it's all farmed and awful and non Civet coffee is much better
I really love the concept of "restriction breeds creativity" and I think Max did a fantastic job with Turnip28. Imo it is the main reason that the lore and world of AoS does not feel as great as it could (though it slowly get better). Just thinking about root vegetables gets the creative juices flowing. Like what about a ginger root "last samurai" themed army, being rival to the cultists of Horseradish in their quest to establish the one and only spicy root? Fun stuff!
Thanks so much for introducing me to Moonstone. Love it and have ordered the starter set for my birthday. Really looking forward to painting the Goblin on the Pug and the Grub. Thanks guys!
As Max said, SAGA is an awesome game. Really great set of mechanics in the dice allocation for the Battle Boards which adds another layer of tactics to the game. Means that you can have very "basic" mechanics and all the intricacy is then in the Battle Boards for the factions. It works so well. It's a perfect introduction to "historical" wargaming in the Dark Ages because it takes from the idea that these are sagas (hence the name) so it can be larger than life and more Hollywood.
I don’t think people know how correct Rob is. Vegetables are a culinary category. Spinach is a leaf, potatoes are tubers, broccoli is a flower, corn is a grain. There is no such thing as a vegetable outside of the kitchen. Rob wins again.
Turnip28 looks so great, there's something wonderful about unique auteur visions becoming real things unaffected by corporate marketing or focus groups. Somewhat reminds me of Fallen London/Sunless Seas although those are video games rather than wargames. Plus any 'boutique wargame' that pushes kitbashing and making your own things really harkens back to the old days of GW with orange spiked cacti and deoderant stick vehicles.
Hey guys, bit late to catch up here, but just wanted to mention that I've been using the Sony A7IV for filming day long build / paint sessions for around a year without hitting any overheating issues. Perhaps I can offer a couple of suggestions. I always run it with the screen fully open, away from the body, which seems to help the heat dissipate from the back of the sensor. The bodywork there does get noticeably warm. There's also an option in the menu to control the Auto Power Off Temperature (it's in the yellow menu block), which you may be able to set to a higher setting. If you're still having issues after trying both, maybe it's worth returning yours? Seems like we have pretty much identical use cases, in the same climate, so you'd probably expect them to perform similarly.
I like how this Max guy thinks, 'let's make something awful so we can succeed', 'you're not really saving money, you're just spending on more stuff'... great words to live by from a wise man. I'm all in on the how bizarre can we make this sardine can battle wagon belching oily smoke, it popped in my mind the second he mentioned the canned fish. Also wanting a crabbernaught wearing a tuna can for armor with it's pincers waving about as weapons. I feel like brainstorming with this guy would be like the best race to the bottom. I'm thinking hagfish bro, the ultimate snot armor. Stoked about speedy Orc paint up Louise, maybe in addition to moving your hands faster, wear something red.
Max is pretty cool, i love his take on things!! I have heard so much about Turnip28 and seen some really cool miniatures being done on line!! Now i need to go learn more about this game that evolved from a joke!! As it looks and sounds amazing 😊
Buckfast is a tonic wine brewed by monks at buckfast abbey, in Devon. It’s mostly consumed in Scotland, and often materialises in hedgerows. Source: lived in Stirling for 4 years for an expensive piece of paper.
i fuckin LOVED this what a great bunch of people. I had heard about the turnip game and thought "that sounds like bullshit" but the setting/models/artwork look awesome!
The army size discussion is why I love 2nd ed 40k. My last CSM 1500 pt army was 2 characters, 3 squads, and 2 vehicles. 7 units and 20 models for a full game.
I'd like to make a plague marine turnip or adjacent root vegetable soldier. Seems good. GG. Will also loudly chew ice to drive the room mad for the lols. 10 juggz hype
Hey I’m also excited for the new episodes to show up in podcast format (because the show is amazing and I listen to it while going for runs), but I also just want to say: Rob, I see you apologizing for issues with the release schedule and stuff, and I want you to know that you are a GIANT among adhd-adjacent creatives for organizing all the stuff you do and keeping on nurturing an honest and independent hobby community. I have no idea how you manage it - the stuff you’re naturally great at you do effortlessly of course, but the fact that all these projects keep growing and stay active even though there are periode where things go a little off the rails and it’s hard ti keep up is WAY more impressive. Lots of respect.
I"m getting over bronchitis and this whole episode has me hacking up a lung every time I laugh which was every 30 seconds. The whole thing is a fever dream of glorious mayhem, much like Turnip28
Turnip is so inspiring to me. I don't think I have anyone to play it with, but I have an army in my head. I now the name of my Toff and the theme, and I've started sketching. My plan is to sculpt most of it. We'll see how it goes...
You can absolutely tin things up in a can. If you go that route, make them a size that would be useful as something. Maybe a dice cup? Or something that can fit the minis after they are assembled.
My brother brought me back a bag of cat poo coffee a few years ago. Added way too much to the cafetiere by mistake and drank more than I should have... spent the rest of the day lying on the floor sweating and feeling like my heart was about to explode. Tasty though
Really enjoying this video. I love SAGA. I’m currently umming and ahhing over maybe doing some Moors. I backed the kickstarter for Turnip. Love the models. Also Max is very swish. Love it!
I love what you guys are saying about starting at a squad level and developing characters that can scale up into your armies. I also think that what Max is saying is completely true - it's just too hard to systematize that kind of thing. It has to be done on an individual level - and I think that's why GW campaigns seem to be "asynchronous." Like, I can still engage with my own narrative campaign in Kill Team even if the bloke I'm playing with isn't. Same for Warcry. Maybe there is a game that has it all done tidily.
1:41:09 bro I feel that. I think I'm a happier person the more I paint 😂 Which is a bummer because I don't have a routine down to get painting done regularly
Thanks for reminding me about civet coffee. Not had it for years. Despite the bean's less than appetising journey, it actually makes quite a nice cuppa.
Buckfast isn’t Scottish is the slightest! It’s actually brewed just down the road in Buckfast Abbey on the road between Exeter and Plymouth. Other interesting points, is that despite it being Devon produced you will struggle to find it within 3 miles of where it’s brewed. Oh and it’s more expensive in Exeter than it is in Glasgow. 😅
@@mikedaknight8854 which they’re of course welcome too. English drinkers just don’t drink Buckfast, hence why it’s more expensive the closer to where it’s brewed, for we drink cider instead. I could be wrong but I don’t think you Scots/irish have cheep strong cider in the first place.
Oh no coffee made from seeds fermented in a cats belly. Gross! Meanwhile Brits: addicted to fermented wheat beverages and if that's not enough, marmite... You guys are hilarious 😂
I appreciate how peachy is lower definition, you assert your dominance rob!
It's because of his times in the smelting pits of Germany in his childhood. They cause you to steam slightly
I wondered if there would be a comment on Peachy's fuzzy demeanor
There’s a fuzzy peach on Juggz.
"Crusty old Games Workshop Rejects" should totally be the new name for Juggz. Nah, I'm just kidding. Juggz is the perfect Juggz.
Thank you Peachy for the little feature of our game Novus Malum at 1:52:46; much appreciated! So glad you had Max on the podcast; who knew your week could be greatly improved by listening to various conversations about root vegetables!
😂 I love hearing max talk in general let alone about root vegetables lol. 😍👍
My favourite takeaway from this episode is that Trish gives Louise her excess rhubarb like they are just normal people.
"Cathedral's ain't edible either"
"Thanks baby"
-best moment 😊😂
If I had the time I would make a Turnip warband called the Ru-barbarians. Rubarb themed vikings. 😅
Would their warlord be called Barbara?
“Tough to be a dead man in the hobby” was a nice quote to sneak in under the wire at the end.
If you had told me to imagine the man behind Turnip28, with no prior knowledge aside from the game itself, I think I would have pictured someone very close to Max. Of course he has a magnificent moustache and a fine waistcoat. There could be no other way.
I feel I would have pictured with a fancy hat. Like a Bowler or Tophat

Prior to this i didn't know what max looks like and i would only be less surprised if he was wearing a bowler hat
I want the confidence in life that Max has with his wardrobe. It's beautiful.
Cheers for another fantastic opportunity to look at your Juggz, folks.

As someone who lives and grew up in Blackpool, I can confirm that Swill is essentially a historical game by its description.
This is 100 per cent my fave podcast just peak performance and I love the conversations.
I love that in addition to insightful and fun wargaming content, we also get extremely niche information about life in a particular part of England 😆
The top of a potato plant is poisonous, but the potato itself was not. It was staple crop long before it was brought to Europe.
Headed to Nottingham in a few weeks for a day trip. Thanks for all the intel on what to see and where to go.

As a Weegie - Buckfast is tonic wine. It's brewed in Buckfastshire Abbey down in Englandshire, but consumed in bulk by the jakeys and NEDs up here...
For reference to North American viewers, Mad dog MD 20/20 fits the similar niche; cheap, high alcohol %, and easily available.
@@Soestinightnot quite as Buckfast has caffeine in it. In a sense it’s what a jagger bomb was before the jagger bomb was a thing.
@@Zabzim I did forget about that fact. Thanks.
Saw Louise and Rob walking through Nottingham the other day and it took all my restraint not to yell out "Hey guys, love your Juggz!"
Buckfast is indeed a tonic wine. And rank :) Also...national drink of Scotland might just be a little known thing called Whisky.
Love the show. Great guests. Thanks for introducing us to such introducing people from the world of tabletop gaming.
Always fun with the juggz crew! Remember- if you complete 20 episodes you are in the top 1% of all podcasts
Thank you, Max, for such a great game and the crazy fun world it resides in.
Nice to hear a shout out for Ramshackle Games. Love their whole aesthetic. Could you get Curtis on for an interview?
