    I agree, XFCE is great. I use Debian with XFCE and LXDE and they are just fantastic, they just work.

    Yet another awesome vid! Ebeez you inspired me to return to my Linux daily life, yet again. I had my ups and downs switching back and forth by distro hopping or going back to windows, but from now on - thanks to your quality reviews - I'm definitely permanently back to MX! My Lenovo T430 already has it, and my main gaming rig will be turned too in the upcoming days (AHS). I'm so happy that youtube recommended you, because you're just like me: loving games. While I'm a programmer, I do love to game also, ALOT, and I'm so happy that Linux has finally reached the support from steam/proton to make it possible, to natively play on linux without any hassle.
    One question to the end: Can I ask, what conky are you using and where could I get it from? It looks amazing, I love the green color, would fit well to my Nvidia theming. Couldn't find that in the MX Conky manager collection, but maybe I missed it out somehow.

      'what conky are you using and where could I get it from?' It looks like Steve has modified the provided 'MX-bridouz_mod-arial-Clem' conky to suit his hardware and his wallpaper colours.

    Ebeez, I switched to MX linux after watching your videos. I love the fact that MX linux comes with NVIDIA drivers tool right out of the box. NVIDIA drivers/settings was a PITA before I discovered MX. Keep making your videos and thanks for your enthusiasm!

    100% right! I am somewhat new to Linux and looking at MX as an option to Mint. I appreciate your video as it's helping me decide what my next move will be.👍

    MX Linux has been innovative and highly dependable right from the start ten years ago. I've been banging the drum for it since then, when the community was still worrying and wondering what had become of Simply MEPIS. I even supplied graphics and backgrounds to the project over the years (the default 'MX Night' live boot and GrUB screen is my work, as were the placeholder backgrounds on the recent alpha and beta releases). It has a terrific team behind it who are finicky about 'getting it right first time', which they consistently do. There's a reason that it rides high on the Distrowatch page hit chart - it's simply THAT GOOD.

    Forgot my pop os password on my old all in one and just switched to MX Linux based on them using xfce as the default. So I figured it was pretty well optimized. I was right. I had no issues setting things up

    I prefer Linux Mint or Linux Lite, but this looks slick! Never tried it before, but I don't really like the UI of MX Linux that much, although I do like the fact they provide an XFCE desktop environment, which means its great for older PC's and laptops. I personally use Linux Lite, but was previously using Linux Mint for a year, but I really like both Mint and Lite, although Lite definitely feels faster than Linux Mint Cinnamon. I have tried MATE & XFCE, but I really like the Cinnamon desktop most. Perhaps I will give MX a go in the future, maybe when I get myself another old PC or laptop, I have plans on getting an old laptop soon, will probably run a Linux distro on that, maybe Puppy Linux, its great for older machines as well. Perhaps you should review Puppy Linux.

    I'm going to give MX a spin on my 970m laptop. I have been running Debian mint for the last month and it has been a really good experience, in my experience it has been the best optimized for X11 and desktop experience with my Nvidia graphics card. I don't get any lag on window dragging as I would on other distributions like Pop and Ubuntu.

      If Xfce isn't your cup of tea, KDE is also supported by the MX developers and comes with the Advanced Hardware Support repo designed for newer hardware. Further, one of the time saving MX Tools is an Nvidia Driver Installer.

    and they say there is no "best" ..............mx is it!

  • @raphael2407
    @raphael2407 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    well, "the best" is subjective.
    For new Linux users coming from Windows and looking for the easiest way out, in my opinion nothing beats Mint.
    MX is Debian without systemd and with a butt load of "userful tools", all things you can easy do on the terminal if you spend some time to learn. If you want to point & click, use the tools. It's a stable out of the box experience. It's Debian after all, with tools.... (it's pretty "dirty" underneith the surface though).
    For me, old Debian head, nothing beats Debian. The flexibility and stability of a core base Debian without the bloat of tools that I don't need, nothing beats that, FOR ME. But I would never recommend it for new Linux users who need a more click & work out of the box experience.
    There's countless distributions nowadays. Look around some, eventualy you find your cup of tea, and then you stick with it and that's your personal "best" 🙂

      @savagej4y241 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well technically, MX comes with systemd so programs that rely on it are supported. It just doesn't boot using systemd. I tried Mint years ago as a first Linux distro and it was a terrible experience. Plus its an Ubuntu derivative that doesn't want to be Ubuntu. You may as well use LMDE instead, but then, its not where LM Institute's resources mainly go to.

    • @stationsixtyseven67
      @stationsixtyseven67 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd agree that Mint is the best option right now for people new to using Linux. I also agree with you that 'best' is subjective and entirely depends upon what a user decides they want to do with their machine(s). We find our own 'happy place' in the world of GNU/Linux and that can take a long time due to the vast array of options that Linux offers.

      @@stationsixtyseven67IMO if you have to manually install network drivers for a wireless NIC, then that distro is a non-starter to begin with. This has been the case with Mint, whereby the recent solution is updating the kernal in the Driver Manager, but of course you need a network connection for that. If a wired connection is unfeasible then you're SOL.

      @@savagej4y241I can 100% recommend the latest edition of LMDE, which is Debian bookworm, themed, with "useful tools", just like MX.
      Rocksolid distribution, very beginnerfriendly "out of the box" experience for most users on most hardware.

    • @raphael2407

      @@stationsixtyseven67usuly new Linux users do (and should) spend a good while with "distrohopping", until they realise it's all just flavour & theming. Then you go either base Debian or base Arch, or the rpm route with Suse or Fedora.
      The true difference boiles down to: "systemd or not / which package management do I prefer / rolling release or point releases" and that's that. You can install every desktop environment or window manager on every distribution and make it your own and after a while you really don't need all the fluff and bloat of "useful tools"....

    MX so far has been running like muck of a stick. Disabled Docklike Taskbar though and use Window buttons because you can't drag an drop on Docklike and it has some weird other issues when you change it. For instance Window manager opens with workspace icon and when I pin it and hover the pointer above it, it shows Workspaces🙄🤔 BTW why is the conky on the right showing October 2023 and not today's date?

    I agree if you have an older laptop or desktop, but if you just purchased a brand new laptop with maxed out ram and 1 TB hard drive, there's few limitations here and you may want to run something like Gnome, Siduction or Debian testing.
    LXQT is a Windows clone start menu type desktop and I believe it uses less memory than Xfce and others. LXQT is very basic though and no modern desktop features.
    I absolutely despise those KDE or Plasma desktops. Talk about a memory hog, these desktops suffer from feature bloat. When KDE 1.0 first came out it was great. Not anymore. It's pure trash.
    All the Gnome tools are not so great, but the base desktop environment is very modern and handles multitasking and multiple desktops better than anything I ever used. I don't have a touchscreen, but if you do and want to use the touchscreen, you better get Gnome.
