  • We are talking about the Spirit this week, how it leads us from time to time. What it looks like to minimize or maximize trials. We’re learning how we can look back at scripture stories to find answers for our own lives. How is the Lord instructing you right now? What does it mean to liken all scripture to yourself? This week in Come, Follow Me we will be studying 1 Nephi 16-22 in the Book of Mormon.
Here are the segments you can look forward to:

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Even before Dave and Grace mentioned the word "wade," it had already hit me hard. So, being the person that I am, I wrote a poem about it.
    Wade
    keep your head above water
thought it's deep and wide and cold
    don't sink to the bottom
just keep struggling against the current
    it may take a while
but like they say, slow and steady wins the race
maybe you're not swimming right now
but maybe that's to teach you
    every step is a journey,
    every footfall a victory
when you wade through the water

I saw God in the small things in my life. One day i was in the temple when the button came off my top and I needed to sew it back on and the needle was so fine I couldn't see the eye to thread it no matter how many times I tried so I prayed for help. I told God that I couldn't see it but that I knew He could and I needed His help to thread the needle. The next time I put the thread near the needle it threaded and I was able to sew the button back on.

For all of you who have read 1 Nephi 1 dozens or hundreds of times, I recommend writing your own, for me it was 1 Kathryn 1; it is probably the most fun I’ve ever had writing. It was a fabulous way to begin an account of tender mercies I have seen in my own life.

I absolutely loved when Grace was talking about her scriptures. How she carries them around to remind her of God and Jesus Christ. Just like Jesus carries us around in the palms of His hands 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 ~ Then, when you talked about God will lead you to the better parts of this journey, it just remined me: the journey may not be easy, but it will be worth it. ~ Chapter 17, when you said that when experiencing trials, Nephi maximizes blessings and minimizes trials - WOW! I wish that I could do that. The trial seems to take up all of my focus. I need to not let the trial(s) be so big. ~ I can go on and on. ~ I've typed 5 pages of notes just on this lesson! Thank you for all the inspiration that you brought. My heart is full.

On the everyday Book of Mormon. I have a tiny pocket size Book of Mormon that my grandpa (1912-2001) carried with him everyday as he was farming. My mom said he had multiple copies and was never without a pocket sized Book of Mormon.

I love the Mercies of the Lord poster, but because I am NOT teaching, the poster part has less appeal to me than do the beautiful prints that you have provided. So, I decided--for me--I would cut out the print for each week and paste it in the place provided in the journal each week. A great reminder of the tender mercy discussed!

Reading about steel bows for archery provided some insights into Nephi & his brothers. Steel bows could become brittle & break if the user applied too much force. And bows could lose their springs if they weren't maintained properly. Gives me things to ponder as I apply this to myself!

    • @JesseClaus
      @JesseClaus 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

What I’m inferring in your comment is a direct commentary on how Nephi and his brothers used and maintained their equipment. Steel, when it goes through many cycles gets work, hardened, think of a paperclip, being bent, repeatedly, back-and-forth, or guitar strings as a vibrate overtime will become griddle and break instead of gaining flexibility. Nephi bow may have become brittle because it was being used so much or have been used for so long to provide food for the family. and the other brothers, it seems couldn’t have cared less about the functionality or longevity of their equipment.
The analogy of constant and consistent use versus occasional use with neglect bears a striking similarity to their testimonies.

My thing that reminds me He is with me is my car. Each time I see it out my window, and when I get ready to go somewhere, I think of Him as I saw His hand in how I got the car and I thank Him for it each and every time. I know it is one of the blessings He is pouring out to me that He has promised. And there is more coming and has been for years since I started looking for His hand in all things. Only when I stop looking do I not see it.

I will always remember the time I came across the passage in isiah ... Will a mother forget her sucking child??? I was caring for my mother inlaw because she had dementia... we were out at the weekend... i bought her an ice cream, and she told the vendor that we were both in love with the same man... I explained that Bobbie was much mother in law...
I later realised she had forgotten Paul by name... that was her way of saying who we were and how we were connected. It was a poignant reminder of the progression of her disease.
The next day, I continued my study of Isaiah and read those very verses that comforted me greatly. I seemed to hear that day "Yes a mother may forget Lydia, but I remember and know you"

As you were talking Grace about even when Christ being with his disciples during their tempest. It made me think as I compared these stories/passages. I thought, “wow! Christ can calm my storms but…then I thought He can calm me like Nephi said in v.16 “I did look into my God.”

I thought I would share a fun little thought I had while reading these chapters. In 1 Nephi 16:18 where Nephi breaks his bow, I have a little note that says "Did the Lord actually break Nephi's bow?" even thought Nephi says it was him. I always thought that the bow suddenly breaking was so odd. I actively participate in archery as a hobby and I've gone archery hunting a number of times and it is NOT easy to just break your bow (unless you don't know how to use it -- but I would assume that Nephi is very very knowledgeable about weapons and the materials used to make them since it's noted in previous chapters that he's familiar with them when he admires Laban's sword). Nephi says in that same verse that he's the one that broke his bow but part of me wondered if it was actually the Lord who broke it, to remind them of who is guiding them, to remind them that the Lord is providing for them. Would love to know everyone else's thoughts on this!

I would like to say that if you felt like the women being strong like the men was not an “insult” or “not a blessing” then you’re not the only one. I think that it is truly a blessing that the women were able to adapt and be strong and striving for the journey. Women in the church are allowed to be strong! 🫶

38:09 38:09 . I have the feeling that Nephi might have been aware of or been involved in some kind of manufacturing process either through a friend, neighbor or even his dad. He seemed to be acquainted with a bellows and how to use ore to make tools. Either this or God instructed him and we aren’t told that He did. What do you think.

“The new home-centered, Church-supported integrated curriculum has the potential to unleash the power of families, as each family follows through conscientiously and carefully to transform their home into a sanctuary of faith. I promise that as you diligently work to remodel your home into a center of gospel learning, over time your Sabbath days will truly be a delight. Your children will be excited to learn and to live the Savior’s teachings, and the influence of the adversary in your life and in your home will decrease. Changes in your family will be dramatic and sustaining.”

You may have found it by now, but I have been looking and today I found it. At least the Instagram place you can get to her account. The art piece is titled "Love Without End" -lightyourhome- I hope that helps. It's beautiful!

I always pictured the “rude” in that as vulgar and turning away from the spirit. You stated it will with they turned from God and started praising themselves or even just forgetting Him

Are they reliable? Lies are pretty rampant about the church. I believe even Joseph's signature has been forged a number of times for various reasons. The devil runs rampant trying to make truth look untrue. Sad.

@@sherriemota7348 Sorry my comments are being deleted for some reason. You can start with the LDS Gospel Topic Essays that confirm the Smith's lived very close to Dartmouth college.
Next you can look at the Dartmouth archive site to verify that Hyrum Smith was on the class membership roles as a prep student. Also, the archive has Ethan Smith and Spaulding listed as students of Professor John Smith, who was Joseph's Uncle by his father's father..
The Dartmouth archives on line will also allow you to read Professor John Smith's writings which show strong similarities with the BOM and DC.

Of course, we know that Ethan Smith would go on to write the View of the Hebrews which also has strong themes related to the BOM, Ethan was Oliver's family pastor.
