Are Sticker Autos A Stain On The Hobby?

  • Everyone loves autographed cards, but not everyone loves sticker autographs on their cards. In this episode the Spitballin' team debates if sticker autos have a place in the hobby and if we would collect them. Some team members passionately say no, while others think there may be a path forward for sticker autos in some circumstances.

Any cards I get signed in person are always for my PC and more of a memento for me when I'm an old man. Like Jeff noted, I've also been on a kick of picking up authenticated signed notecards even of HoF players/managers that have been long since passed. It's like I have my own little Cooperstown, learning the history of the sport -- helps me feel connected to those old legends.

It is so easy to get a card autographed by a baseball player. I had Carlos Correa sign a SSP that I got for $5. Now it is super valuable to me. Not a rookie, but a cool looking card. Stickers do absolutely nothing for me when I can get the cards I want autoed anyway.

😃 on card Auto when pulled 😐 sticker auto when pulled. I'd much rather have on card but I'm not totally against stickers in certain situations. Like 80% on card to 20% sticker autos when opening product but I never really buy stickers for PC. Sticker autos are like your cousin you seen twice a year and at first you'd try to avoid him but by the end of the day you find it he's not that bad but know you can carry on just fine without seeing him more twice a year. As much as I hate sticker autos, having auto's in products is better than not having autos. Would you rather open up 10 blaster boxes for an on card auto or mix in sticker auots so there's an autograph every 5 blasters? With that said, putting a sticker auto on anything numbered /50 or less should be a criminal offense, right to jail

One aspect of sticker autos I’m in the middle about is when someone signs such a volume of sticker sheets that it can sustain card companies for years (and honestly, we’d probably never know about it).
Imagine a player debuting in 2021 and they sign an absurd amount of sticker sheets (they need the money, or whatever the reason in this theoretical would be) and throughout 2021….. 2022…. 2023….. maybe even 2024, you’re still pulling a sticker auto from that 2021 session.
It’s also apparent of a star player who signed an amount of sheets and then passed.
Diego Maradona passed in 2020 and sticker autos of his were in 2022/23 soccer product (and maybe the last few sticker autos might be rationed out for a few more years).
Stan Musial passed in 2013, but it looks like he still had sticker autos as recent as 2022 !

Really enjoyed the topics in this episode! Overall, believe any collector would prefer on-card over a sticker auto. However, to each their own. Collect what you enjoy whether it's an on-card auto, sticker auto, or no auto. Question to the SC team: what are your thoughts on getting vintage cards autographed by HoF'ers? Do they increase the value or do you think it's consider marking/damaging the card since it wasn't a card that was manufactured for a certified auto?

In my PC I only have 1 sticker auto, and he only has the MLB debut patch auto thats on-card (Andruw Monasterio). When I was looking for a Jordan Love rookie auto last month, I went for the on-card playbook patch auto for half the price of his prizm sticker auto. Stickers just look cheap to me, but if its my only option (like 2023 sapphire) then it is what it is.

Donruss used to have the silver stickers (like Phil mentioned) on a much thicker cardstock (Look at about any 2004 Molina RC auto) and the sticker would usually be hidden inside the card, it looked much better and as a kid you didn’t even realize it was a sticker.

Sticker autos were originally created to allow for card companies to replace damaged cards.
Then some bright people figured out they could save the company a lot of money.
The original signed sets, as opposed to rare inserts, came out in the last 90's and players had little trouble signing
thousands of cards (some loser players had friends "help" get them signed and as there was no witnesses it happened.
Players today get paid too much money to bother with it anymore, so they often get contacted after getting drafted
and sign pages upon pages of stickers for a small amount of money. These stickers are then used for years.
For HOF players they get used even after the player has died. At that point, the ridiculousness of saying its a signed
    card really hits home.
Thankfully, for most sports, the ability to sign a piece of memorabilia by slapping a sticker on it has never caught on.
I personally no longer by sticker autos if there is an alternative unless we are talking rookie year stuff.
I made an exception recently to get a Chuck Norris auto from Leaf for example, and I likely paid too much given that
more of them are coming onto the market.
For card companies that do, do sticker auto products, they really need to make the cards unique in some fashion to prevent
fraud. Some of the earliest cards to have autographs were just the same card only autographed and maybe embossed with a seal
that was not hard enough to fake.
If you make your cards too cheap eventually you damage you brand.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hey man, thanks for watching and commenting. That Chuck Norris card sounds cool and if there aren’t any on-card options, your hands are tied!
I agree completely they sticker autos on baseball cards - especially when there are thousands of on card autos every year - just look cheap and cheapen the brand. Like 2923 sapphire update. Went from high end brand to crap in my (Chris here) opinion.

While I do prefer on-card autographs, I feel like sticker autos still add rarity to a card. Jeff mentioned in-person autos, I do not collect those because they were not pulled out of packs that way. Sticker autos add another parallel of rarity. Agree that sticker autos are an abomination 98% of the time. But like your Soto, Scott, or a product like Topps Chrome Update where on card signatures are too difficult to obtain on a timely basis, stickers have a place.
Now, what Panini does with sticker autos is an insult to collectors.
I pulled a dual auto /20 Trout/Ohtani from 2022 Topps chrome sonic (an otherwise terrible product). And I’m torn about holding vs selling because the autos are stickers. (It’s my only Ohtani… and I don’t want to risk not getting his auto down the road. Thankfully, i did luck into a Bowman Sterling on card Trout /99 that will be in my collection forever.)

On card autos absolutely done for the 1/1 and the serial numbered cards say to 50. Sticker autos should be meant for the higher serial numbered cards or the non serial numbered cards. I still buy both, but the on card autos look better and you have that value that the player touched the card. I like in person autos for the memory of meeting the player and the experience surrounded it, so those cards would be for my PC. Now what are you thoughts on the actual auto? A lot of modern are disappointing because if the auto wasn't on the players card, you wouldn't be able to connect it to a player. Is this is because of the casual culture or that the players are asked to sign a million cards? Take a minute and look back at some of the older cards and the autos are pretty clear and sharp. Lastly, the Juan Soto auto that Scott showed is a nicely done auto. Maybe you guys could do a show about the auto quality? Thanks for the show and listening to my rant.

I know I'm late to the party, but I think a lot of the hate comes from base cards being on card, and sticker being inserts often times. Topps specifically has shown us it is not an issue with getting the players to sign on the cards, they literally got over 100 signees to sign thousands of on card base cards, but yet an insert auto with only 20 copies is a sticker is completely bull. I understand like the soccer situation, I could totally see how a having them sign stickers could be a way more effective way to push out products, but as far as the big 3 American sports go, stickers in general are just cutting cost on the manufacturers part. I personally have only bought 2 sticker autos, and hundreds of on card autos, with the 2 stickers being a local kid for a buck, and my favorite player insert auto with only 26 copies, that I am not even convinced he gave permission to Topps to make the card, I bet he wouldn't have signed them if Topps asked him to😂

So a sticker auto is not like getting a hard case signed (a comparison someone made). A sticker becomes a part of the card (just like memorabilia imbedded in a card, or a logo embossed on a card). I think of stickers as more analogous to cut auto cards. I have the player's auto and as an auto collector (mostly) that's fine. However, I agree that on card is better than a sticker, and stickers can sometimes look 'out of place'. Finally...best in person autos....RCs of HOFers...as long as they are not old and fairly rare RCs...so, '82 Donruss Ripken in person (psa mint 9/10 auto)....cool...'54 Topps Aaron in person (even psa 4.5)...not cool.
