    I think Ohtani still has room to grow value-wise. He's already accomplished something only Babe Ruth has ever done. If he racks up something like 55 HR's this season and then comes back with 50+ again in 2025 along with a "solid" pitching year ... then I see Michael Jordan type love in the hobby. If by chance he gets a World Series Ring? Fugetaboutit' ... to the moon! I will still be looking to buy some non-auto early year low pop refractors which are still affordable. The auto stuff is likely forever out of my price range.

    Phil made a great point halfway through. It’s almost like supply counts twice. Even with fixed demand, less supply means a higher price. But these days low supply is actually DRIVING MORE demand, when they should be separate variables. I think supply should matter, but I think the trend of supply CAUSING more demand is temporary and actually leaves an open opportunity for growth in medium pop base cards when you can see a clear hierarchy.

    We need an Ohtani hierarchy project similar to Cajun Cardboard’s MJ hierarchy. Regarding pop counts, if they are too low, it’s hard to find comps and then some potential buyers may be hesitant for fear of overpaying. A large portion of the ~100 pop count for the Acuna sapphire will probably get vacuumed up if he has another MVP-caliber year. I think everyone has said this before, but the market is still in “show me” mode for him. Thanks for the episode!

    Another thing people don't take into consideration with Ohtani is the fact he is a right hand pitcher and a left hand hitter. It's not a coincidence that he struggled in batting the season after Tommy John. It goes back to the mechanics of hitting, being a left hand hitter he is going to get a majority of his power from that right arm because that left arm basically just follows thru with what the right arm is doing. Another example of this was Bryce Harper last season when he struggled to find his power. He may not have any pain with most things but that arm is not strong inside and with the vibration of hitting a pitch at MLB speed is not enough to affect it mid swing surely reaching out or just swinging oddly will be painful.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a really good point. Ohtani will need time to build up the strength in his right arm.

    For once I'm on Team TeaPot on this one. Is Ohtani a unicorn? HOFer? yes! Key is though, *at these prices* to me he's priced to be a perennial MVP contender and elite pitcher. To buy right now, with his pitching career on pause... I'd have to expect him to win MVP this year. The risk/reward isn't good. I went with his Gold Update rookie in a BGS 9.5 over his Psa 10 bat down. I got to thinking are either of them really low end when his psa 10 bat down costs about the same as a raw copy of his White Jersey w/ glove? Is his Gold Update really low end at $600-$800?

      Hey man -Chris here. I can’t call a $600 low end. To me, low end is a card if I want it and I see it, I buy it. No wavering. Just snatch it up. And at $600, I’m contemplating. Probably over-contemplating.
      Congrats on your gold Acuna. I like the rookie update image.
      I’d love to see a pic of your Acuna ssp collection.

    Please discuss hyper inflation of the US dollar giving Ohtani cards extra padding against any downward movement. That actually plus a part in all this because a lot of legendary cards didn’t hit there growth spurt during hyperinflation.

    super curious what yall think about holding sealed wax in the breaker era. it seems like such a higher percentage of boxes being opened compared to even 5 years ago. i have become more patient with my purchases because it seems like more cards are making it to market. i know Phil has a sweet rookie red refractor of my boy mister pete alonso in the case behind him that I'll never get to have, lol. do you think sealed wax is the way to go or has no impact

    • @Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin
      @Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not sure about sealed wax - especially in this era of expired redemptions- but I love it! Especially from years with big RC classes, like 2018. I stay away from sealed wax from the last couple years, however.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Chris here - it’s very possible that more product is getting ripped today than ever before. However, I think we can also safely say that print runs are higher than ever before as well.
      Blabbin’ makes a good point about redemptions as well. Sealed wax where the biggest autos are redemptions has very limited potential. Some 2018 Ohtani rookie autos were redemptions so do your homework before buying. Same with Gunnar in 2023 and Bichette/Yordan in 2020.

    Question to clarify, are you referring to Ohtani Rookie cards or just his cards in general?
    IMO there's a great opportunity to grade and sell Ohtani NON rookie refractors to Ohtani collectors and use that money to buy a few good rookie cards. My next question, what is your recommended Ohani Rookies? 2017 Bowman Prospect rank? What's the best Rookie Auto for the value? (Donruss?)

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We were referring to Ohtani cards in general.
      Chris here - interesting idea you have, but in general as you get further from his rookie year, Ohtani cards will get more an more limited on upside.
      Jeff and I made a video on our Blabbin’ ‘Bout Slabbin’ channel in which we break down what we think ohtanis best rookies are.
      It seems like the hobby has made his bowman chrome hitting image is the choice for top base card rookie.
      Refractors are beautiful.
      I cannot recommend strongly enough that you avoid the non licensed MLB cards if you’re looking for value.

      A players first topps rookie card in a psa 10 will always hold some value. Just keep an eye on the PSA pop report on their website.
