Great recap guys and a phenomenal 2024 for this channel ! The one lesson I learned this year was that my hobby purchase patterns can change and I do not need to feel bad about it. Basically, I am leaving hobby and jumbo boxes in my rear view mirror and focusing on the cards (Singles with the odd blaster box and packs strictly for fun) that appeal to me. I held a tighter focus with this train of thought in 2024 and was able to happily strike off a few long held items off the want list and into my PC 🎉. All the best through the holidays and May 2025 be the best year yet !
BitCoin is just so much more liquid and you can move out of it in Hours. You do not even need to own an electronic wallet of Bitcoin, you can just buy the ETFs on the retail Stock markets and it would just sit in your normal Stock account. The access in 2024 to Bitcoin on the ETF make it so much easer to own and very less risk vs buying 2024 draft prospects.
Do you know why Bitcoin is so liquid? Because you have celebrities who own Bitcoin that's pushing it. Without them, Bitcoin would be nothing. If they all lose interest, so does everyone else. That's the honest truth. There's literally nothing else backing Bitcoin. It's basically a pyramid scheme.
Bitcoin is liquid, because celebrities that own it are supporting it. Thats basically about it. The rich are carrying Bitcoin. If they lose interest, Bitcoin is done. It's basically a pyramid scheme.
Ty. I would love a close up video of how you display your cards (maybe you already have one). I like the long shelving like that around the wall like that and wanted to see your set up. Appreciate it.
My biggest lesson learned is.. I caved and bought into breaks more than ever this year, mostly because I love sapphire. And the thing is, I hit big A LOT, rarely missing and mostly hitting low number/auto of big players. I say all this because… despite being incredibly lucky and successful, my ROI is in the negative, even at best. Stick to singles, buy into breaks sparingly for the entertainment value only if you see breaks as something you like. I could buy back my ‘09 trout and my other cards I miss from selling off at cheaper rates than what the new rookies are being sold for even though their rookie cards are so diluted with tons of products and parallels ugh.
Love the channel and discussions. As an investor/collector of both crypto and cards, I would say that being weary of BTC because of its ability to be hacked, is no different than any other investable asset class as it relates to assuming risk. With cards, we deal with trimming/altering in vintage, outright fakes with iconic cards like 86 Jordan, and now CAT Scanning sealed product. And the one thing about cards is, no one seems to be in a hurry to regulate the industry, and start weeding out the bad seeds, and reduce those assumed risks. I love collecting but to say one investment is sketchier than the other…
You deal with alot more scammers in Bitcoin than you ever will with sports cards. Just look around YT for Bitcoin, and every comment section is cluttered with scams. It's way worse than the card market, in my opinion.
I appreciate y’all talking about conversations many of us have in our own head. You guys help bring some reason & peace in the hobby. Many of us are hurting, because of costs & especially with these breakers - but buying singles and cards we truly envision in our PC makes the hobby fun still.
Great show again fellas. Good stuff. I've sold so many cards I thought I never would and hardly even think about them any more. Some I wish I'd have sold at certain points..
Chris here - the fact that they didn't sell out of Bowman Draft at their list price should bode well for us collectors as far as getting prices down a bit on wax. But we'll see if there's any reaction at all from Topps on it.
If bitcoin can be hacked, so can all your online bank and brokerage accounts. The bitcoin protocol can be updated also to harden it against quantum, which is still a long ways away from being a threat.
I’m no expert but Bitcoin isnt regulated right? So if someone steals it you have no recourse as opposed to someone hacking your bank account which does have regulation and safeguards to protect you.
Chris here - YES! I have several cards in my collection I bought because the price seemed great. But did I need them? no. Hard to stick to the plan sometimes.
Great convo as usual guys. I enjoy Bitcoin too, as I am a collector of many things. Let’s just say 2017 was a good year ($900 per). Which brings me to my second thought about consolidation: A good idea in theory, but be careful of what you let go of. I sold 3 contenders rookie autos of a little known Patriots QB for $1,000 each and thought it was a great deal…or how about trading a ‘33 Goudy Yellow Ruth PSA 5 for a Ruth auto? I thought a great deal at the time, but…eh apparently not so much. Don’t even get me started about selling a 2003 Exquisite Jordan patch auto for a whopping $15,000 !! It did help me buy the home I live in, but the value today could buy a house by itself. Diversification is key…take your time, and try not to spend too much time looking back.
Thanks for watching and commenting! chris here and yeah, we've all sold cards that we regretted. It's unavoidable really. One thing we try to do when consolidating, is sell ohtani cards to buy a bigger ohtani. If its possible. It definitely isn't always. Sorry about your Drew Bledsoe cards (jk)
I have to disagree. You don't need diversification if you know how to invest your money. I'm not sure why so many people stress diversification. Would you feel the need to diversify if you invested your money into only the 1933 Goudey Ruth's a few decades ago? Perhaps Mantle and Mays rookies? After seeing the investment potential, why would you need anything else? It makes no sense to me. The Ruth alone has 10-15X since early 2000s. Mantle and Mays in a PSA 5 has also 20X in a PSA 5 since early 2000s. Anybody who owns many duplicates of these from two decades ago will laugh at the idea of diversification. I'm unfortunately not one of those folks, but I'm just making a point the diversification is unnecessary.
T-Pott brought up a fair point about quantum computing, while I’m not an expert I’ve taken some decently high level blockchain courses. To my understanding quantum computing is still far from being able to pose a risk.
I think it is far from consumer access right now, but it doesn’t mean corporate entities including government agencies couldn’t hack it and access it. We are at a really interesting crossroads financially and in the world…time will tell 😬
@ Merry Christmas! The government has some ability to hack it although it’s incredibly difficult and not repeatable to scale. I think using an exchange puts your more at risk as opposed to a hard wallet. Ultimately I’m not worried about quantum computings effects on bitcoin because any other protected account we have on the internet would be equally or even more compromised
How does anyone even know exactly how many Bitcoin will ever exists? Sure, you hear the rumors of 21 million or however many, but how do we know? It's not even a tangible asset.
We also don't know exactly how many Bitcoin have been "mined". Sure, we have an estimate, but that proves nothing. What good is an estimate when Bitcoin isn't even a tangible asset?
2023 draft starting gaining momentum in march because it became apparent that Wyatt Langford was going to have a very good shot at making the Rangers opening day roster.
Hot take: “investing” in 6-7 2018 Bowman Chrome base Ohtani cards in PSA 10 is a better move than buying the same card in PSA 10 /499, refractor. The value would be roughly equal, I think. I’d rather look at the single refractor than 5-6 base cards, but it seems like base in PSA 10 are very liquid. And while Ohtani hype is high, his achievements aren’t based on speculation. Not sure the higher priced cards are as liquid. Personally, I buy what I enjoy looking at, what I think will at least hold its value. But what I’ve just proposed doesn’t seem like a totally crazy short-term strategy.
Higher priced cards are definitely not as liquid. As value increases the potential buyer pool does begin to shrink. However, I also think the volume of high grade base ohtani rookies will keep values from from rising too much. There are always PSA 10 copies available. Takes a lot more demand to send the price up and maintain it! Plus the refractor is just a beautiful card taht I would love to look at all the time!
Chris here - i'd say it depends on the quality of the patch and the auto. As a player collector, I like non-rookie cards, especially parallels and great looking autos. So i'd say theres definitely value potential. Just not as much. The cards will have to stand out amongst every non rookie Dynasty auto, and some players have a lot of them .
Bowman baseball is broken. My entire collecting circle used to rip so much but it’s not fun anymore. However, bowman U prospecting is picking up steam, what’s the major difference between Bowman U and the Bowman baseball products?
@@chrisc4264 Decades ago, Mantle and Mays rookies were very affordable compared to today. Cards in general of those players are now very pricey, which is why I got into original photos. You're right, most of us don't have thousands of dollars to spare. I've been lucky enough to acquire some big original rookie photos. While popularity has certainly picked up and some photos are already pricey, the majority of the market is still untapped. Most of what I've bought has cost less than three figures.
@@chrisc4264 Not necessarily rich, unless you're aiming for highest grades or a Ruth rookie. I personally got out of cards, due to the outrageous cost and converted to original photos. With many of those, I can often find the big name rookies without the premiums, but that's all changing as more popularity grows in the photo market.
Chris here - hopefully Bowman Draft not selling out will show Topps/fantatics that there is a limit to what we will spend on product and maybe we;ll get a slight shift downward. Of of course, the opposite could happen as well.
If you collect Lebron James, sell fast lol. B/c he is tied to Diddy and who knows how many people will be busted next year with Patel as the FBI director and Trump in office.

Probably a fair point here. So many shady people and potential scams running through our card hobby these days.

Many of us are hurting, because of costs & especially with these breakers - but buying singles and cards we truly envision in our PC makes the hobby fun still.
Jeff here: really appreciate that. I think a lot of what we collectors face in the hobby is pretty universal, so we are glad to talk about it.
Thanks for watching the channel! Chris here and I take the same approach - just hunt the single cards I want for my PC

They need to make a hobby box version of Bowman Draft similar to regular Bowman with 1 auto that they can sell for $150-200 a box.

I brought Bitcoin in 2016, and thank God I did. Always diversify is my advice.
Chris here - I agree with this advice even just within in the hobby! Dont put all your eggs in one basket
Diversification is for folks who speculate. Speculation and investing are two different terms.
I'd love to see a video of each of y'all's card rooms.
Chris here - that's a fun video idea!

Yes, but if everybody else’s wallets are getting robbed, Bitcoin loses its utility and acceptance, and therefore, value.

First, invest in bitcoins.
Next, sell the bitcoins for a return of 10 times or more.
Finally, buy a card of your choice.
