- Designed by Brian Chan, the Ruby Eyed Leech is a deadly leech pattern. No stillwater fly box would be complete without a few Ruby Eyed Leeches in a variety of colors. Wow !. Nice job !! I caught 18 inch rainbows and Brown trout last week with a red one similar to yours. Thank you for the lesson. I'll tie this forever.

Phil, this is the other Phil. This was a terrific video. The techniques that you used clearly can be used for the bruised leech. It was of particular interest to see how you loaded the dubbing loop. I will give this one a try later today and report back. It should be easy, but my skill set for dubbing is still under development. Cheers

+Philip Rowley I love this pattern and been looking for ages trying to find the 1/8" red bead with the silver lining that the hole of the bead would actually fit into the hook. Any suggestions Phil? TIA!
Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment. The glass beads can be challenging to find at times. Sometimes you can find them in craft stores you could also check for Killer Caddis Beads, size small should work. Here is a link I found doing a quick Google search, www.bearsden.com/product12624.html.

Great vid. I’m working on building up a box of the patterns you and Bryan come up with as I am rapidly becoming addicted to these small leeches. I was wondering if you have any opinions on using a heat gun versus the hot water technique for training the dubbing fibers upon completing the fly.
Hi Ehren, Brian and I hope our leech patterns work as well for you as they have for us. I have never tried a heat gun. I am not sure it would work and I would be concerned about too much heat singing the dubbing fibers. Perhaps a hair dryer might be worth a try?

Is the process the same for tying a dubbing loop on the rotary vise? Antron spins nicely around the thread in rotary - but I haven't found it works well with stringy material (yet).

Hi Andy, thanks, glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. You can certainly use a rotary vise. Once the loop is formed and twisted tight simply spin the fly to wind the dubbing in place. Be sure to sweep back the fibers with each wrap to avoid trapping too many. I still tend to tie the old fashioned way. Old habits die hard I guess. :)

Hey Phil, Hope I am not being a pain. I saw Brian Chan tie this with a 50/50 blend of AZ semi-seal of black/red, and red. He used a dubbing brush which would make the fly a little heavier. I use stanless steel wire to make my dubbing loops, he used copper. Is there a reason for the copper? I can do it on my Nor-vise with copper or stainless. I just wondered. Further, do you make this leech in a balanced fly and if so do you put the cone and bead onto the pin? All the best, Sean
+Sean Mooney Hi Sean, I think Brian uses the copper for two primary reasons, one it compliments the dubbing mix and two it twists easily without breaking. You should be fine with your stainless steel wire. I have made this fly in a balanced configuration and it works well. I most often use a regular gold tungsten bead and a red glass bead behind it on a pin. I found the tungsten cones not to be a shiny as the regular beads. The good thing is that the fish don't seem to care.

Great video .Are these used for wild fish or stocked trout ?
Hi the Ruby Eye works for both wild and stocked trout. I have even caught other species such as smallmouth bass on this fly.

Do you think marabou mixed with a synthetic would work for this fly ?
@@rouryglen Yes you could certainly use a tail of marabou or even a tuft of rabbit fur.

Tyson Seafoot Of course I do. It’s not uncommon for a fly pattern to be featured on a number of different channels. A number of my patterns can be found on other channels too. Brian and I have been very good friends and business partners for many years so I have been able to see the creation and development of some of his patterns first hand. I have also featured a few of his other patterns as well as those of other fly tyers too.

Want to add to Phil's reply. Phil ties this fly differently than how Brian does and brian adds a bit more weight to his as well. I love that both Brian and Phil have their own variation of this leach pattern which is the best I have ever used. Unfortunately, I don't have the patience for tying, so I bring samples back from trips and have a friend tie them or I buy proven ones like these. Nice vid Phil.

In the past I always took samples back for a friend to tie for me. Also had an elderly gent in princeton tie for us years ago.
