  • When choosing toys for our parrots, we need to make sure that we are picking things that are species appropriate. No toy is 100% safe, but there are definitely some things out there that are 100% dangerous. If you have any other toy safety tips, I'd like to hear from you in the comments!

I own a 10 year old Quaker. I’ve had her her entire life, but only started making improvements to her care the last few years. She’s always been territorial and whenever someone made her aggressive by being near her cage, she would grab a bell and start flinging it around and screaming. I recently removed all bells and got all natural toys. I noticed improvements to her temperament and she’s become more interested in chewing new toys too!

My birds love bells. They don’t trigger hormones or aggression in my birds, they just love to ring them and tap them. They like that it makes a sound. And we get stainless steel bells for them, so we know it’s safe. Our budgies are not strong enough to bite through and break the stainless steel bells and clappers, so there’s really no danger there.

Every bird is an individual, so I try to generalise where appropriate! As your birds play with the safe kind of metal and they don't have any negative interactions with them then that's great :)

I live in Australia and we unfortunately don't have many options for where to buy bird toys for an affordable price or shipping so i like to shop from chipper parrots (im pretty sure they are a charity that supports a bird rescue) and Queenslander aviaries. Not everything they sell is bird safe but majority of it is and chipper parrots actually sell planet pleasures toys!!! Plus chipper parrots sell cheap toy parts like 72 finger traps for $20AUD, 50 natural corks for $22AUD, 20 mahogany pods for around $20AUD. If you live in Australia and are struggling to find a place to buy bird toys i highly suggest you check them out!

Pablo's parrot toys online have great toys made by hand by a lady in Melbourne. Very reasonable prices and a flat rate postage. My Grey loves the leather and wood ones. They last a long time and every part can continue to be reused. Hope that helps you.

My cockatiels opened the carabiner and it went threw his lower jaw and out the side of his beak. I had to take him in to emergency and do ten days of antibiotics and pain medication. It cost me close to $1000. With the the little charges and for emergency care.

A person can get wooden hangers and kraft paper rope to hang toys. Tinybird prefers balsa wood and sola strung on kraft paper rope. All natural without dyes.

Thank you for all the info, I think knowing your own birds individual habits and interests are so important. I have been wondering if you have any advice on how to get your birds more used to new toys? My budgies can sometimes take months to even approach new toys. It’s very difficult to rotate toys with them since it takes insanely long for them to get comfortable with them, I try to do it monthly at least but they refuse to use them most of the time…Side note your Jurassic park shirt is really cool! Here in Sweden where I live I only know of 2 bird stores, I recommend Zooingvar if any swedes come across this comment :P

@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you for answering. Yes, I have indeed, it's a very good video! My biggest issue is its very hard to work with my budgies as they aren't at all tame. Since they are not comfortable around me I can't help them/encourage them. I'm currently training one of my budgies with the hope she will get more comfortable with me but that will take time I'm sure (she is 9!). The majority of their toys are shredding toys/sticks so I tend to give them a lot of them. Foraging, activity and foot toys go completely ignored (even with millet in them!). I really want to introduce other toys to them I'm just unsure of how to go forward. I always thought they just didn't enjoy the toys but since watching your videos I'm wondering if they just don't understand how to use them. Hope you're doing well!
