  • There are many different types of attachments to add toys to your parrot's cage or aviary, however some can be dangerous and put your birds at risk! Here are my thoughts on some of the most common ways to attach toys to your bird's cage!

    Another thing to note with the ones which are similar to pearl/pair links, but stuck here is that some of them are actually spring-loaded. So once you unscrew them, they can twang back which makes them even more risky.

    I use the larger C links for my birds. There are a few toys they like to hang from and I like the added strength. Plus luckily none of my flock are interested in messing with the connections of the toys to the cage. Thank you for your insights, they are always very informative.

    I’ve been using organic sisal twine for hanging toys, they also can impose a risk but if tied tightly, it can be a fairly effective way to hang a toy.
    We also have a thick metal quick link.

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh absolutely! Everything has risks but some are much lower than others - sisal twine is a great one to use!

    I use vegetable tanned leather, make a knot, put a bead on, thread through the toy attachment part and then thread through the cage bars. Put a bigger wooden shape (flower, star or heart shapes) bead and knot. There are no loops then. It will work with paper string too although the knots are much smaller and bigger birds would chew through it. I use paper string for busy mats (usually leave few of the strands longer when attaching items to the mat and use those to tie it to the cage) still got few pear links which I will be replacing soon. Although my Budgies are not really interested in them that much. Still better to be safe than sorry

    I usually use the plastic links. My budgies are not strong enough to chew it, but they’ve never even tried to chew it. They don’t pay attention to the hook, especially when the toy I made them is so much more exciting with their favorite textures and materials.
    Also want to talk about o-rings. They’re the things usually used to attach notecards together. I saw them on a cheap toy I previously bought, so I thought they were safe. But they are usually not made of bird safe metal and can be toxic if they lick or chew it. If you do find one that is stainless steel, it will be a bit safer, but it still poses a pinch risk if your bird figures out how to open it. Also it’s just a hassle in general cus it’s pretty hard to close.

    Great information. I have an adorable 3-month cockatiel ;D Can you make a video on how to get your cockatiel to accept scritches and like it? I have been trying for a couple of days and whenever I try to, my bird accepts the scratches but I don't think my bird enjoys it.

How long should I wait to get a new female budgie to pair with the male budgie? Please help with any other info I should know or tips for after loosing a bird😢. Thanks and have a blessed day. I’m sorry the what that 💙 any new bird that comes in will need to be quarantined elsewhere in the house for 30 days anyway to make sure they aren’t unwell, but it really depends on how he copes with the grief.

    I use leather strips and natural string with quick release knots. You can get them really tight but can pull it off instantly should an emergency arise.

      Great point! Most horse people know how to tie a quick release knot, but it's a really useful for thing for everyone, especially pet owners, to know; anyone reading this should go look it up and learn how to do it :)

      @@idahoe7581 untreated cord like sisal, jute or hemp. Sisal is a favourite with mine. Cotton causes crop impaction. No brands just untreated cord so it doesn't have chemicals on them.

    My amazon can undo the small pear clips, but he has only done it one toy, that he didn't like and threw to the floor. I got some of that sea grass rope, and I go a coconut rope, I haven't put them in any cages yet because I read somewhere they can cause impaction too. I haven't found any evidence either of either hurting birds, would you know anything about these claims?

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those two shouldn’t cause crop impaction as they are natural materials which can be digested or can move through the body!

    • @GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals
      @GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IDK about you but I sliced my finger trying to open this up many times before, I bet a bird can slice their beak, also you have to remember than the bird beak is a much better tool to open this up than our thick chunky human fingers, they can easily slide their beak and stretch it up.

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I have seen many birds get stuck or injured on split rings - some will be more stuff than others but they are relatively easy for bird to manipulate!
