DANGEROUS BIRD TOYS | SAVING MY BIRDS LIVES

  • Two very influential bird people on Instagram and TH-cam reached out to me when they saw I had cotton ropes in my birdcages and on my birds purchase around the house. You know you need to take something seriously when they care enough to take time out of their day to urge you about dangerous matters. I feel guilty that I did not take care of this matter sooner, but I thought it was important to share with all of you the common mistake bird owners make.
    Cotton can be very dangerous for birds because it can become stuck inside their body which can cause a myriad of health issues for your bird. It’s recommended that natural fibers such as sisal be used in their place. I’ll add these to my amazon link below for you if you have any desire to replace your birds perches with safe alternatives.

    I now have a male and a female Sun Conure. He is going on 8 months and she is now on 13 weeks. She is a firecracker and nothing deters her. He is a bit of a scaredycat but a very smart bird and a sweet bird. I bought some of the Sisal and the manila both 1/4". Mango is learning to climb the rope and until I got her he didn't climb much, but now he climbs up and even grabs the rope and Swings to another perch. I think he is trying to show her how much he can do. Thanks for the reply on the rope. I did what you said and they love it. Mango is the 8 month old and Peaches is the 13 week old. They both are winning my heart. She is fearless and is so much fun. He is a great bird but seems reserved so much but sometimes I think he is missing his time with me even though I am here he has backed off but finally he came over and licked my face again. I wasn't sure he missed me but with her he has been distracted. They are both children and have the playful attitudes and she is always pushing him to extremes. I think they are fighting and I seperate them and take one into another room but then they call back and forth to each other and won't settle until they are back together. It is wonderful to reach out they both want to come over to me. That Manila Rope is one of their favoriet toys. I am going to make a swing out of wood and Manila. I haven't used the Sisal and only read afte I got it that it is for a cat scratch post and said something about catnip. My vision won't let me read the fine print even with the magnifiers I have. I have one other options to read more on it but I do have a question: "Will Catnip afftect the conures?" "IF" there is any mixed in with that sisal. Thanks again for your last reply. These two birds are making a difference in my life especially that little female firecracker. I already have so many stories on her it is funny. take care!

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think the sisal has catnip on it but I could be wrong, maybe they were suggesting you put catnip on it and use it on a scratching post? Lol I’m speculating but sounds like you have a good setup and your birds are doing well. You can cage them next to one another without caving them together, so they have down time apart.

    I really enjoyed this video. You have a lovely natural way in front of the camera, and it is so clear to see how much you love your birds. Great seeing you repurposing stuff for your birds. Loved your bird that kept trying to pull your hair, that was funny. I’m trying to find alternatives to paper on the cage floor. Do you mind telling me what you use on the floor of your birds cages please.

    • @bestflockingfriends

      Your complements made me smile this morning thank you for that! I truly appreciate it, and thanks for watching!! Yes, I currently use crushed walnut by Kaytee in my cages and my perch bases. It can tend to grow mold (I clean the perches daily and don’t witness this often) but it can be troublesome if they’re playing in it or foraging for their dropped snacks. I get it off petsmart on a subscription for about $22 a bag delivered which to me is a great deal. My vet, Dr. Zellner, has encouraged me to use a shredded recycled paper and I haven’t found a resource for that yet. I also used to use paper on the cage bottoms (just rolled out painters paper) and it seems to be effective but tore a lot and soaked through with urine.

    Luckily I came across this video! I’ve had my Cockatiel for a year and 8 months and she’s always had rope perches in her cage and hanging from the ceiling and she’d always chew them. She would spend hours chewing them and I didn’t think it was that bad especially seeing that most of the stuff she chewed of would fall on the floor. But after watching this I’ve taken them all out her cage and off the ceiling. I’m not sure what to do tho as she chews everything from clothes to doors. She’s never had a blockage from the rope material before tho even tho she’s been chewing them for nearly 2 years. I do notice she does sometimes eat some of the fiber as I can sometimes see it in her poop but at least that means it was passing through. I’ll try find some natural rope perches for her but she’s definitely gonna be mad at me because she loves those darn rope perches!

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh definitely order some toys from planet pleasures!! You can encourage her to chew them instead of your house and clothes by putting treats inside she has to forage for!

  • @AlphaDelle
    @AlphaDelle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think it definitely depends on the bird. I have a cotton rope in my parrots cage and he’s never chewed it. After years it’s still in perfect condition. Therefore I leave it in as it’s good for his feet. If he were to chew it, I’d wrap it in vet tape. I definitely don’t just disregard the risk but monitor it closely.

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is important (from what I’ve been taught) to monitor their cotton ropes and toys and watch for any fraying. Even just rubbing their beak on it sideways can catch filaments in their mouth which can wind up down their throats. Use your best judgment!

      Ah that is a scary road to travel. On the opposite side, you could get a baby and teach it bad habits as it grows to an adult. (This is not unusual). I recommend doing a LOT of research and handling some birds before getting into bird ownership, it is NOT for the faint of heart!! I am happy to do another video on cookie and our journey with her. If people see the word “cotton” associated with bird play it should be obvious how that could be deadly! If someone has to research that in depth-I sure hope it’s to educate themselves BEFORE they get a bird. I’m curious if these same people have human children-and if so did they take a class on why toddlers shouldn’t be given legos to play with

      I didn’t wanna make anyone upset with my comment(so far nobody’s said anything) I’m very passionate about all birds but especially exotic birds! I’ve got an African Gray and he’s amazing-we’ve got a very special bond. Long story short we more less saved one another-his previous owners neglected and abused him-they were moving and they were just gonna leave him there to die 😭I had to move in with my parents when I was diagnosed with Epilepsy (I got him about 6 months after moving) my entire life completely changed almost overnight-I no longer drive-I can’t work and within a couple years all 3 of my kids were all grown up with lives of their own-honestly at that point I wanted (and sorta tried) to kill myself-one evening I was home alone so I went to the basement and was sitting with my back against the closed door of Greys room and sobbed-I was just about to hurt myself but suddenly I felt a sharp pinch just above my rear end-after regrouping to try it again and another pinch followed by a pecking sound on the other side of the door and then a lil voice that said HEY!of course I knew then it was my feathered angel! I opened the door and here he comes running to me and crawls on my lap and then my shoulder and he was looking at me funny and began to lick my tears! At that moment I started to cuddle him and thanking him for saving me and I promised him I’d do everything within my power to save any and all birds and I won’t let him down! He also knows when I’m about to hav e a seizure and senses when I’m acting off or whatever you wanna call it. I take anti-convulsant medication-haven’t always had good luck with the medication. The only thing that works almost 100% of the time is when I start feeling that odd feeling I go to our room and lay down with him for cuddle time! I don’t know how or why but petting him and talking to him takes my mind to a different place. He’s prevented hundreds of seizures even when the medicine couldn’t. My dream is to start a small parrot rescue here in my home-that would be amazing and 1 small way of giving back to the most amazing species on earth! So I take it personally and get highly offended when I hear stories of people who don’t give their birds the love and respect they deserve! I said short story..lol sorry!

    I have a young Sun Conure going on six months old. I got him at thirteen weeks and now he is going on 22 weeks now. I bought some
    Yangbaga Sisal Rope for him. I saw the Sisal and took your advice and got both Manila and Sisal. I think the Sisal looks best. Am I correct to make him a climbing rope? I got 1/4" dia. I am concerned about Mango's health and want to be super careful. The Sisal looks lighter than the Manila and the Manila had a petroleum smell. I put it and the Sisal outside to air out. Mango is growing and yet can't reach his cage if he gets on the floor. I had to clip him when I first got him and the Vet did the clipping. I know how to clip but I can't see. This also is a Challenge having lost my sight, it is much harder than I first thought. I had several birds out west when I was working for the Navy. I never actually used any cotton or string but did end up with a rope perch but it is cotton. I won't use it even though it is in storage right now. I am having to learn more about birds now and there has been much more available that wasn't when I had my birds in California. I ended up having to find homes for them all and miss the Cockatoo (Umbrella) that I got from a pet store when they imported Wild birds. He was a real pal. He was a Kitten in disguise. I just want to make sure for Mango. He is young and has a long life ahead of him. Just to make sure, Is Sisal a good choice? I watched your video more than twice and appreciate yo0ur making it. Thanks so much. I hope to get another bird in the future both a mate for Mango and an Eclectus or a Citron cockatoo but time will tell and sometimes things change. I do want to get more budgies to nest. I had a great little hen that was blue and she was so kind in her demeanor. She would let me pick out the babies and hold them even when she was on the nest. I only took the ones that were feathering though. What a blast to work with the babies. OK, I do tend to go on. Thanks again for your help. :D

    I love your video and the idea to reuse the wire from your rope perches. Those natural ropes (sisal and Manila) can also be toxic to your birds if they have been treated with petroleum products. Usually they smell like fumes (which you mention in your video). Only untreated natural rope should be used. They should smell like dried grass and should not stink and need to be aired. I bought 60 yards of sisal rope, but now I cannot use it as it has an unnatural fume odor which I only found out afterwards has been treated with petroleum products, and toxic to birds.

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far, so good! I did leave all of my natural rope outside in the sun and it helped significantly with the smell. I did check with some other bird professionals just to make sure. It was amazing the difference after leaving it outside to reduce the fumes, and so far we've not had any issues with them in the cages and perch areas. If you have a link or website to a place that sells untreated rope, please send it to me!

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! From what I’ve read it’s not recommended for a few reasons. 1) the pieces can become severed and cut them, 2) their feet or toes can become entangled easily and they may not be able to chew and break it to become free. Causing bleeding or losing a toe, worse; death :( natural hemp, jute or sisal can be used and I haven’t found it to be too expensive! Amazon!

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They don’t have to chew on them, even just rubbing their beak to clean it can cause loose filaments to get caught in their beak and into their mouth over time. Their feet can also get these filaments and they clean their feet with their mouths. You make the best choice you can for your parrots. If you’re willing to risk it because they’re comfy that is on you. Best of luck.
