Hey everyone, I notice this video is getting quite a bit more views now. Thanks so much for all the support! I plan to make a video similar to this one about Sonic Generations in the future. DOWN WITH MAD SPACE.
DOWN WITH MAD SPACE!
Also new viewer here. Hi. Based list.
I don’t know if it's just me or if it's the "mic" or whatever you use, but it sounds a little... how do I put this politely... deep-fried(?). Great content though, definitely keep it up.
Also, definitely consider either 1) making a new list including music, or 2) make a music tier list. Easy clicks.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah I have a really deep voice so some of that is kinda unavoidable. I may make a music tier list sometime, but I'd definitely want that to be its own video as it's a lot more subjective.
When I was trying to 100% this game. I got to mad space and It was so unfair that I looked up what the hint systems mean to where the emerald shards are. I didn't do that for any other rouge/knuckles stage because it felt like cheating but mad space is just not fair. Also about Iron gate the pacing is a lot better when you use the hover ability as you go down the elevator. I know you don't have it instantly but it enhances it a lot
@@frostbyteskylight I could imagine a deep voice would make that more difficult. A really good mic could fix it, but I doubt you’re willing to invest so heavily in one, at least for a while.
A music tier list should be fun to make, especially with the 6 distinct unique genres of music for each character. Also, controversial videos tend to do well on TH-cam.
Hi hello hi
Eggman: You have ~10 mins.
Child me: Oh, good. Sounds reasonable.
Rouge: 5 mins will be plenty.
Child me: ...why?
Seems she had a death wish. Good thing Shadow came back to save her ass.
No, Eggman told Shadow to set the timer on the detonators for 15 minutes, while Rouge declared she could get the Emeralds in 5 minutes.
5 minutes for the heist, 5 to regroup, 5 to leave the blast radius
I enjoy every level except the kart racing stages.
Also the Mad Space hints aren’t useless, they tell you the opposite of what to do,
Also glad someone agrees Final Rush is the best level.
So mad space was already using the ability to alter gravity at that time? And then that Sonic lost world copied this mechanic from Mario galaxy, while Mario galaxy copied this from Sonic adventure 2.
Well Mario did it better than sonic initially did it.
@@johnpett1955 Yeah, it did. But it doesn't change the fact that they implemented this idea over half a decade ago.

I just replayed SA2B recently after watching your video and when I got to Mad Space, my final emerald piece was THAT emerald piece, I tried getting it initially thinking "okay, how bad could it really be to just land on the platform, line up with the emerald, and jump" but yes, it is indeed THAT BAD to get with the controls, so I feel your pain!

@@frostbyteskylight ngl sounds like a rickr0||
For someone who hasn't played this game, you made it understandable and concise. You deserve more subs than this XD
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Hints in Mad Space aren't useless; you just have to use a bit of logic to figure out what's negated in the second hint. Usually it's easy, like "a high/low place". The first hint is always poetic and useless in every stage. The third hint tells you exactly where it is but adds a "not". I've never had issues with the hint system there.
In a stage with as much annoying crap as Mad Space, the last thing I want to put up with on top of that is a hint system that is cryptic and indirect just for the sake of it. It wasn't necessary at all.
@@frostbyteskylight easier to find the emeralds yourself than paying attention to whatever the hint try to give you
@@frostbyteskylightokay but why would the game give u a free win yall complain about the level when they already give u a radar that tells you how close u are to the emerald why want anything more at this point why even play the game if u want all the scores handed to you that easy
The hints lie. If it says "a low place", it's actually in a high place, and vice versa. (This does not apply to the hints with backwards text.)
wow 10,000 volts just got directly put into my system because this list. i guess you weren't lying.
LOL, is that a good thing or a bad thing?
@@frostbyteskylight probably bad ._.
i've never gotten past pumpkin hill but your voice is nice to listen to so i like it
I appreciate the compliment. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I had the most trouble with the last room in Crazy Gadget and in the Knux section of Cannon's Core.
Despite flying out of range of what a usual level would be, I'd throw Core somewhere in the middle.
The time stop mechanic was interesting, and it's like combining an Ark level with SA1's Lost World in a way.
If the Kart stages make it, then there we go. I'd even replay Mad Space over the Karts, so it's my bottom 3.
Idk how I feel about Cannon's Core. I agree the time stopping mechanic is pretty good, but some of the passages you have to maneuver through are ANNOYING. If I had to guess, it would probably be in the 14-18 range.
Thanks for watching!
nice video!
Mad Space at last. Already I fully sgree lmao. I cannot stand playing that stage, ESPECIALLY the 100 rings it takes me like half an hour it feels like. One thing I disagree with is Mission Street. I absolutely hate that stage just because of the 100 ring mission. There aren't even 100 on the stage so you have to get to the end without getting hit collecting as many rings as possible and replay part of the stage. For me it's genuinely the hardest bonus mission in the entire game and I always dread replaying it whenever I replay the game.
It's nice to see Meteor Herd so high, I've always loved that stage, I would have put Cosmic Wall as the highest mech stage personally, I think the low gravity just enhances the mech gameplay so much. Also agree with Final Rush being the best. City Escape is great but the Final rush is so satisfying to play, it's the perfect sonic stage imo. Great video!
If I ranked all of the stages and added points for each placement I think egg man and tails would be at the bottom for me. But this was a good list with well explained reasons for each placement
YOU WERE RIGTH! IT DID SHOCK ME
Very unique list. Personally, I would say I dislike Eternal Engine as much as others dislike Mad Space. I always get very frustrated with that stage. I feel like all the pitfalls and air locks there exacerbate the clunky jumping physics of the mech. The Artificial Chaos in Eternal Engine are also the most annoying in the game, having to wait until they stick their heads out of their bodies before you can shoot them, by which time they've already stabbed you with their lightning-fast tendrils.
I used to like Meteor Herd a lot, but grew to hate it when I tried to collect 100 rings there. Many times I would be at about 80 rings and then, unless I had a shield, a meteor would hit me out of nowhere and take them all away. I also find the verticality of Meteor Herd to be somewhat tedious to navigate.
The stages I tend to most look forward to playing would be City Escape, Metal Harbor, Pumpkin Hill, Aquatic Mine, Pyramid Cave, Crazy Gadget, Dry Lagoon, Sand Ocean, Radical Highway, Weapons Bed, Security Hall, White Jungle, and Cosmic Wall.
Gotta be honest. Sonic adventure 1 was better. It had a hub world, better running animations, better treasure hunting stages. The story is just as good and all the stages are just more fun
I prefer Sonic Adventure 2 by a wide margin, but to each their own.
I actually like Mad Space. Sure, it's frustrating, and the control are shit, but i really like how big it is, and the gravity gimmick is pretty cool, even thought it's poorly executed. My favorite Rouge Level
wtf is wrong with you.
@@flubberisagoodmovie I like hard things, what can i say?
I was surprised you had eternal engine so high up, I figured cosmic wall would be the highest shooter stage. But I agree about final rush being the best sonic stage
Rouge and Knuckles stages always felt like a chore
Some do for sure. I think the biggest problem is the change made to the radar. It was just a lazy way of padding out the stages by forcing you to search for one emerald piece at a time. Taking away that player choice definitely hurt some of the stages.
I liked them infinitely more than the mech stages. At least I felt like I had some freedom and skill.
Ngl i cannot hate any of rouge's stage cause they have the best music imo
Good list. The only disagreement I have would be with your point on if Final Rush showed up earlier in the game, that it would be as iconic as City Escape, or enjoyed more. As cool as the stage is, it is not designed well enough to be an intro stage for new players, and it's music/set pieces don't really match the same excitement that City Escape provides.
Regardless of my opinion, I think you make a really valid argument, and I think it's really close between those two stages for top spot
You make a good point there. Final Rush is a great stage, but not a great FIRST stage. Final Rush doesn't have a huge GUN truck, but I just find the grinding really exhilarating.
Thanks for watching!
@@frostbyteskylight
Im gonna have to replay final rush to give my opinion because all i remember was it being a pain in the ass because i could never grind rails good
@FrostbyteSkylight the rail grinding is so good though haha. I love playing it when I'm grinding chao garden
The grinding controls are stupid. You have to press jump button and left or right at the same time to change lanes... It's so frustrating when you press correctly, but the game tricks you and you are pulled off the rail in the wrong side...
Eternal Engine made me cry when I was a kid
Great video. Screw Mad Space.

@@frostbyteskylight sonic adventure 2 was never my fav sonic game (infact I think it’s very overrated) however I’m still a sonic fan and can appreciate original content 🐟
I fucking hate the one where you have to chase after the president using tails.
Surprised Green Hill wasn't on this.
I’m with SomeCallMeJohnny on this one, I just don’t enjoy the treasure hunting stages, but I enjoy the others pretty well. Edit: Except Pumpkin Hill is pretty tolerable, because of the atmosphere, the song and pretty intuitive level design.
The biggest problem is the radar.
I like the hunting stages but whenever i play sa2 on pc i always use the better radar mod.
If sega ever re releases sa2 i hope they change the radar. If fans can...sega can.
Your voice sounds so eerily similar to robbit watch. XD He does yokai watch content.
I agree with number 1 and 2
I wouldn’t agree with some rankings being mission street and final rush since I don’t like those 2 as much compared to other levels but this video was entertaining
I think the slow elevators leading to Shadow were meant to be a reference to Akira, but it's totally not worth it
I'm shocked pyramid cave is as low as it is on the list. Thinking about it, it is probably the worst sonic stage, but it's not bad at all. I'd definitely place it above hidden base and lost colony to name a few. Of course, that's my opinion though. I know the speedrun tricks to break that level in half, so I probably have some bias considering how cool of a level it is to speedrun. Regardless, I always love it when people can back up their hot takes. Awesome video!
Unpopular opinion: i dont really like pumpkin hill but i find aquatic mine really enjoyable.
Final rush was the most frusterating to get every emblem in though.
amy usually gets done dirty every time she is playable too, maybe rouge and her need to be playable again soon so sega will get them right
for the reverse clues just pause the game and take all the time to read what they say lol
Mad Space, personally wasn't THAT bad, but I agree it's frustrating
Well when it makes me rage quit the game twice I have no choice but to go on a rant lmao
@@frostbyteskylight Guess so, keep the content going!
Mad Space is quite awful. Certainly one of the worst, if not the worst for me.
It’s actually that bad. It’s so bad that the garbage devs basically played into it. The hard mode emerald pieces are seeded, and one of them on mad space is literally just sitting in the open on a platform. They know you can’t grab it without immense frustration because the mechanics in that area are so bad. It’s like they are spitting in your food so they can watch you eat it. Fuck whoever made this stage.
What about Cannon's Core?
As I said in the beginning of the video, I didn't include Cannon's Core.
Definitely disagree with some of these (sand ocean and eternal engine) but overall this is a very well thought out list. Well done m8
Thanks! I know the mech stages aren't everyone's favorite thing, but I enjoy them for the most part and I do think some of them are really good.
@@frostbyteskylight sand ocean in particular is very unfun in full playthroughs, because you don’t have hover, forcing you to wait on the slow platforms. That’s my reasoning for ranking it far lower. Eternal engine I just find frustrating, do to poor enemy placement, and lack of control of lock on with the bombs.
Pyramid cave is the best stage in the game
It might be my favorite speed stage.
Good on you if you enjoy it, but it's kinda bland to me more often than not.
I personally think aquatic base is worse, don’t get me wrong, mad space is still trash but at least it’s open and you have some idea of where to go if you read the backwards hint boxes correctly, but levels like aquatic base and death chamber are just cramped, huge corianders that do not work with the treasure hunting gameplay, I genuinely hate corridor treasure hunting levels as they don’t work with the character s known for exploration of open levels.
My favorite is White jungle
A solid choice. Thanks for watching!
Good video. I have many opinions different from this but I want to mention the most different one. Hidden Base should be WAY higher. I don’t buy the complains with Hidden Base because you can destroy the dynamite from a long distance. I also like how much open space there is in that level, how has the least dick-ish enemy placement, and how much horizontal movement is emphasize which leads to it having a fast pace.
Green Forest is peak 🤷🏾♂️
I hate Mad Space... it's extremely huge, it's confusing, the controls are messed up, and you sometimes can't escape a planet!
No level in any 3D Sonic game has ever made me angrier than Mad Space. It's not even close.
the fact that this man has only 40 subs, just reallt sucks
LOL thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the vid. I'm working on another one that will be up soon.
@@frostbyteskylight Subscribed, cant wait

21:27 I'm going to need to disagree on this. NOT on your assessment of Final Rush being better, but on switching their order. City Escape NEEDS to be the first, and Final Rush NEEDS to be the last. If City Escape didn't train players on how to control Sonic and how rails work, Final Rush would be regarded as a Kaizo Trap hellscape of a level. Imagine a 9 year old with no prior gaming experience being thrown into that first rail grind and not getting any tips on how it works
Yeah, you have a point there. Others have said similar things. For the sake of difficulty balance City Escape definitely should be first.
the 5 worst
mad space
death chamber
eternal engine
mission street
sand ocean
The 5 best
metal harbor
city escape
radical highway
white jungle
final rush
Now imagine mad space without the radar...
I only have two disagreements.
1) My favorite stage is Metal Harbor, but I'm willing to concede that the reason is probably because it also has my favorite music track in the game, which I know you did not take into consideration in your list.
2) I didn't like the mech stages as much as you did.
Great list, though. I found myself nodding along quite often.
This is a really solid list. The only thing I heavily disagree with is Security Hall being Rouge's best stage; I absolutely hated that stage as a kid (most likely due to the timer), and even now I would say it's her second worst after Mad Space.
Edit: Seeing some people say that the Mad Space hints aren't useless. Actually, the devs messed up and sometimes the hints are straight up wrong in that level. As far as I know that's the only level with this issue.
overall i mostly agreer but i feel metal harbor is above final rush
also wheres green hill lol
LOL, there was no way I was getting all A ranks just for the sake of unlocking green hill.
@@frostbyteskylight LMAOO valid
I think mad space is much better than one stage. AQUATIC FUCKING MINE. I spent 30 minutes to beat the stage. I would get a single beep for 25 FUCKINGMINUTES.
Yeah, Aquatic Mine can be frustrating sometimes. The construction of the stage can deceive you into thinking you are way closer to the emerald piece than you actually are. Not to mention getting the air necklace can be a nightmare if you don't know the optimal route.
For Final Chase, skill issue lol.
Hopefully I become as skilled as you are one day, since you're one of those perfect gamers who never feels challenged by anything.
Final Rush always felt clanky to me, for exemple you can die if you go too fast on some of the rails, and man does it feel wrong trying not to go too fast in a sonic game
Weapons Bed: "Cheap enemy placement and explosions are pretty rampant. If you go too fast you might take a permanent swim at the bottom of the ocean."
Eternal Engine: "Its not hard because of cheap bullshit."
Be for real, you're capping. You just put this here to be controversial.
Lol, really? I made the list as I saw fit. You're free to disagree, but it's pretty dumb of you to think I did the list that way for 'controversy'.
I might be one of few, but I actually enjoy all the treasure hunting stages. They have a lot of strategy to them. Expecting to master the different levels on your first run through is unlikely, but having to slow down and get good at something is not inherently bad. I can understand that they really break the pacing if you prefer high-speed game play. Also if you find omochao he directly tells you in mad space that the level is designed to confuse you. As a 10 yr old I just pulled out a pen and paper and got to writing. Eventually I just learned to read backwards.
30. Mad Space
whoever designed this level deserves hell
29. Route 280
kart level
28. Route 101
kart level
27. Death Chamber
not absolutely awful like many say, but I find myself running around trying to get the radar to go green for befuddling amounts of time
26. Sand Ocean
this level is so incredibly slow and without the thrusters it's even worse. cool vibes tho
25. Lost Colony
not that bad of a level but why in the name of god is it so dark
24. Mission Street
janky ahh design, really puts the jank of the mech controls to its fullest potential
23. Egg Quarters
just easier Death Chamber with water, very intimidating considering how early in the story you play it
22. Aquatic Mine
I hate water I hate water I hate water I hate water
21. Hidden Base
tons of cheap deaths, super slow
20. Prison Lane
almost a good level but so many sections that stop you dead in your tracks
19. Eternal Engine
challenging but sometimes annoying, feels like an eternity
18. Security Hall
timer used to terrify me as a child, not that bad now, solid
17. Dry Lagoon
very nice vibes and fairly fun but traversal is tedious
16. Weapons Bed
very lazy design and throws a ton of annoying enemies at you but it still quite fun
15. Iron Gate
just a solid level
14. Meteor Herd
quite cool, not much to say
13. Sky Rail
wasted potential, but fun nonetheless
12. Crazy Gadget
a very good challenge once you've practiced it, admittedly some very cheap parts though
11. Pyramid Cave
would be very fun if not for those damn ghosts, also the hoops you jump through are.. inconvenient to jump through
10. White Jungle
solid level, just not especially great
9. Cosmic Wall
everything that makes weapons bed fun and more, and actually well designed
8. Final Chase
honestly a pretty fun level once you get used to the gimmick, really feels like you're chasing someone down
7. Pumpkin Hill
classic, cool vibes, although not very fun to traverse
6. Wild Canyon
fun to traverse, fair emerald placement, very good introduction to treasure hunt levels
5. Metal Harbor
running up to the rocket and getting bounced off the corner of the guardrails because you spindashed slightly wrong is infuriating, boarding section is annoying, that said very fun level otherwise
4. Radical Highway
goofy hitboxes for the rails on the bridges, only issue tho
3. Green Forest
very good level, quite cinematic, strangely easy
2. City Escape
classic, very good introduction to the game
1. Final Rush
most fun level in the game, makes very good use of Sonic's moveset, makes you feel good at the game
Final Chase is the worst speed stage but I'd still put it above a lot of the Treasure Hunting and Mech stages. Also if you have mods for the game, you can give Shadow an instant spin dash like Sonic has in SA1 which allows you to spin dash on the spinning cylinders, making the stage much more bearable and actually pretty damn enjoyable. The level unmodded though does have some really cool ideas and there are a few really cool skips you can do to skip over a lot of the more frustrating sections of the level
I disagree with your placement of Pyramid Cave, while it's not one of my favourite speed stages, it's still very much enjoyable. Those long hallways you speak of do have a lot of rings you can jump through for extra points but it's also fun to just spin dash through them because of the downward slope of these hallways. The only issue with this stage is the key finding sections which drag the pace a little bit but they're not that bad
1. green forest
2. meteor herd
3. dry lagoon
4. wild canyon
5. aquatic mine
6. cosmic wall
7. pyramid cave
8. city escape
9. pumpkin hill
10. security hall
11. metal harbor
12. white jungle
13. hidden base
14. death chamber
15. prison lane
16. egg quarters
17. sand ocean
18. final chase
19. lost colony

In my opinion, the game would be the best if Tails, Knuckles and Rouge weren't playable. Their levels sucks! It gets worse when you try to do the challenges. The controls of the game are terrible, too. Only Sonic Team could think placing most of the moves on a single button would be a good idea.
