So what if Mozilla's role in the industry is 90% Firefox? A free, modern, stable ethical web browser from a non-profit is such a huge accomplishment already. We get regular updates literally in exchange for nothing.
Firefox has gone from 30% market share in 2010 to 10% in 2019, that's the problem. He brought up their lack of bargaining power with Google, if they're limited to one product then as their market share continues to decrease they will be paid less for search engine placement and continue to be forced to lay more people off.
If Google is paying Mozilla so that Google can't be called a monopoly (Tech Alter's conjecture not mine not confirmed) then Mozilla is complicit in Google's unethical ways because it's preventing anti-trust laws from breaking Google's effective monopoly. Also if Google decides to take Mozilla off life support then Mozilla is gone unless they diversify.
@@nahometesfay1112 I wouldn't say they are complicit because clearly it's government's role to step in this matter. I hope everything works out for Mozilla. It's hard to be both "pro consumer" and "profitable" these days. The only companies that can pull this off long term seem to be companies that sell multiple services/products. Giving them the ability to lose money with a "pro consumer" service in the hopes to attract new users and beat the competition. I actually believe this is what Mozilla is trying to accomplish right now. If they can provide other services or even develop tools and utilities at a reasonable cost, they might be able to keep FireFox going. My business believes in the same standards for privacy as Mozilla. FireFox is installed on all company computers and many of our employees actually switched their personal browsers to FireFox after being introduced to it at work. We need to fight back against the horrific web standards that have been set in place by the likes of Google. I know that I'll certainly be making some donation to Mozilla. And if Mozilla VPN meets the same standards as Mullvad, we'll give it a try at my business.
It’s really depressing seeing the market share drop year after year for FireFox. I really love FireFox and I want them to succeed. This video gave me some hope for the future of Mozilla.

@SnoopyDoo There's a difference between standards, and competition. And I believe you're mistaking Firefox as an anti-standard browser. The solution isn't to give all the power to 1 company. Going back to the EV situation: Creating a standard would be for ALL EV's to use a single charger, NOT for everyone to rely on Tesla to make their cars. This is pretty much what you're proposing since Google is still the maintainer for Chromium. Which means that any changes will have to be approved by Google. Now, you could try pulling a Brave Browser, but Google would still make feature related decisions that violate privacy (limits on ad blocking extensions). Also if you are the only major implementation on the web standard - you more or less are the web standard; and monopoly is generally considered bad. So it would be better to have competition.
@SnoopyDoo Just as a side note. DevTools in Mozilla are better than in chrome in my opinion. I know you won't accept it. Ah and mozilla is far from a shit product. Anyway, enjoy your google privacy
@SnoopyDoo chrome is closed source and has far more telemetry than firefox. you're clearly a person that gets offended when someone values their privacy based on your wall of text 🤷♂️
The biggest problem Mozilla has is its CEO who takes millions in bonuses and has a huge salary while at the same time firing security and engine development teams. If they went on and charged 1$ a month and gave me a browser without bullshit integrations with third party services I'd happily pay for it. But that wouldn't be enough for that CEO.
@Ganga Din But he was part of the problem, at least. They had a marketing strategy, that made people like me who prefer to focus on technical merits not wanting to use Firefox. Presenting themselves as something like a charity while trying to sell a false sense of safety seems scummish to me. (I can't find the proper words in English) Also he should have avoided doing that while being a Mozilla CEO, especially in a case like that where both sides hold irrational positions.
I love Mozilla and I think I would only buy an VPN from Mozilla. This is a really smart move and I hope they use enough marketing to become the dominant VPN provider
I had been using it since it was called Phoenix back in 2002. It was one of the browsers I was testing websites I developed, and became my favourite. Recommended it to everyone, installed it to replace MSIE in computers I had built/repaired for family/friends (MSIE was/still is a security hazard). I swapped over to Brave after discovering Mozilla had decided to become 'Woke' and started advocating censorship. The only downside is that cloudflare treats Brave as it would a bot and I get captchas quite regularly, but that's the price of privacy.
Wonder what if Microsoft chose Firefox instead of Chromium as the base of their new Edge browser since one of their motive during that is their "we love opensource uwu" thing.
The reason why Edge is still in the game is because they're bundled as the default browser in Windows, and many of the normal users don't even change their default browser.
I've been using Firefox since version 2.0 and never looked back. Yes it has a lot of drawbacks, but I don't know, using Firefox kinda feels satisfying because of their so-called principle. At the very least, they're trying to stay true to their principle.
After using Chrome for many years, I actually switched to Firefox again recently. I was wondering if Mozilla can start a website building service like Wix and SquareSpace at competitive price/plan. With their reputation for privacy, they might have a good chance to attract customers.

I found one AMAZING advantage of Thunderbird that I wish they would realise and exploit. I had a computer that ran on Outlook. All my email was held on a server and the IT guys said the server is full and I had to clear my emails (turns out they were lieing). I did not want to clear my emails as I used all my emails into a ongoing search archive (nature of my business). . The day came where I had to switch to a new email account (long story) and that my emails would be cleared off the server. I downloaded Thunderbird, it automatically took on my emails, and (unlike Outlook) I was able to download all my emails onto my computer's hard drive. I was then able to disconnect Thunderbird from the internet and have it on my machine as .... well as an app to access my old email archive. I was now free of the IT guys' server and I had all my emails available to me to research my 10 years of email discussions and archiving through the search function. Oh and I could do this offline! . Now for the clinch.... I was able to download a second Thunderbird package, link it to the network (with my new email address) and I ran it along side my older-disconnected-archive-thunderbird-package WITH all my old and new emails stored on my machine. This way I was able to show the IT guys my middle finger when they want to restrict the server usage. Much to the dismay of the IT guys who for some reason believed I had to run my computer to their standards, I now had zero server usage. . I backed up my own machine onto a portable drive on a weekly basis. This was important because I traveled a lot and used the portable drive as a mobile archive while traveling (very handing when working off line). I also learnt that if your hard drive is about to crash, it generally starts showing signs and does not crash immediately (so I would have enough time to transfer files if there was trouble on the horizon). . Can you believe it- on one day the server crashed and the entire company's computers where down (we had about 2,500 staff) and I was the only guy still working. The CEO had me and the IT guys in a meeting - it did not go well for the IT guys and from that day onwards, not only was I allowed to continue using Mozilla Thunderbird but Thunderbird was actively encouraged at the company. . I now have a business of my own and I only allow the use of Mozilla Thunderbird on all our computers.... but we also only run linux (ie: no outlook or apple stuff)
As an IT person, I despise outlook. But I'm stuck with it as our organization is tied to Office365 MFA, and app passwords disabled. Thunderbird at least stores email as separate files which are easily searched. Outlook forces you to use PST files for it's archives, and if those get corrupted, then you are done. The entire archive is lost.

Mozilla needs to make their VPN available here in Germany, because here, Firefox is the second most used Browser. I think they would make good profit from that, and i hope that they will stay relevant for enough time to bring their services on the right way. Pray for Mozilla.
Google can easily kill off Firefox, all it takes is for them to stop paying mozilla to use google as their default search engine and then the open internet will disappear. Some simple drama could easily make it happen. It's quite scary really.
It could be not that bad. If we also kill Safari. So we have one engine for rendering web content. It will speed up progress and make it much easier for web developers. Firefox is really good for web developers. Just saying that if that happens, it seems not that bad. I use Brave, it's Chromium based but not chrome. Firefox I use on my phone sometimes. I have some bugs in Chromium browsers on my android, relative to permissions, IDK why. And Firefox just works
Same opinions as you. Even though i miss some things in Firefox (like that overly popular automatic translate), I'm ready to trust Firefox and I'll happily live without some features to support my favorite browser since I started browsing the internet. ❤️🦊
Mozilla was once the go-to browser for most people. But they never adapted to change, never took inputs from its users and went along a sordid narrow path of stagnation. For example, Mozilla still does not support multiple infinite open tabs and after a certain number, you need to scroll tab windows. Whereas Chrome has no such issues. Even though this was raised as a concern on multiple forums, Mozilla turned a blind eye.

One thing I'd like Mozilla to do is go all-out on the ability to customise Firefox. Yes, it's already pretty strong on that front, but they could go further.
Here is how Mozilla gets leverage back when negotiating with Google for default browser. They need to track how much revenue they generate for Google. Track everything. Then when time for payment comes up they can say "We are generating $X for you and you are only paying Y% and here are the numbers. You need to pay us a bigger percentage." Effectively Mozilla is an ad revenue company just not directly, but as a middle man. By tracking ad revenues generated they regain all the leverage they need to negotiate for better payments on par with the revenues being generated. Google is not paying them all that money because they are barely making money on it. Also even just a simple search without any ads is still growing their company and their is profit tied to that as well as it helps to refine their systems which evolve over time constantly. --- In the back of my head I get the sense that Mozilla was really just a stepping stone company setup to interrupt Microsoft long enough to allow say Google for instance to come and get in the game. This would highly explain why little has been done to finance the company and basically keep it around until it served its purpose. This coming from an active user of Firefox/Cyberfox for many years now. The reality is that by Mozilla having made Google its default search provider, that instantly boosted Google's reach over night. They paid big dollars at first but are certainly winning on this deal every year since. They operate with non paid staff for this same reason, there was no long term vision or plan beyond being a disruptor. This is why now they are looking to branch out and see what else they can squeeze out. If it fails no biggie, if it succeeds though then everything paid for itself. Large companies like these are typically just different cards in one man's hand and I suspect this is no different.

@@DonVigaDeFierro Android and chrome are pieces of open-source software. They can be used without any connection to google. TH-cam and Gmail are web services. You're mixing 2 different things there.

Giving them the ability to lose money with a "pro consumer" service in the hopes to attract new users and beat the competition.

Now a year later Firefox is borderline spyware..
Mozilla, my default browser from past many years. I love to see them flourish.
Fun story!
Maybe I'll check out Thunderbird then.

Mozilla was once the go-to browser for most people. But they never adapted to change, never took inputs from its users and went along a sordid narrow path of stagnation. Yeah their not the best, Brave has better security & there have been some security issues with firefox in the past. But they fix their mistakes & improve while putting their consumers first. Because of that gold service they've made me a Mozilla fanboy.
brave went into the route of weird crypto stuff so their now a big no for me
The second most successful Mozilla Project is Rust.
it will the 1st very soon
@@FedJimSmith Nim will overtake Rust soon. Industry won't succumb to another C++. Rust is not for the average Joe.
I am not a big fan of Rust BTW. Yes. I do realize its safety concerns and all. But Rust is not at all an easy to grasp language to work on. To one person that may be like not a big deal. To a company or startup that is horrible to think on.

Thunderbird is the best Email client, Firefox is the best browser the Developers, I think Mozilla need a serious Branding campaign
I guess there was some money from google involved when Microsoft decided to port Edge to use Chromium in the backend. The way Microsoft is starting to embrace open source, they could have just as easily used Gecko (Firefox Web Engine) in Edge's backend.
I have watched a vid on YT on how micrasoft embracing open source s a farce and ultimately it comsumes the said open source and absorbs it.
@@aniketshm Embrace Extend Extinguish has kind of became a meme between Linux fans.
@@404Anymouse "Embrace Extend Extinguish" is an actual internal quote from Microsoft. It was found during the anti-trust cases.
@@LaZZeYT Yes, that is the origin of the meme.
I think a lot of people are forgetting, that Chromium is actually open-source, it's "Chrome" that isn't. I would still much rather support Gecko, Khtml or even WebKit.
I've been a chrome puritan for years...just recently went back to using Mozilla as well because they've made serious improvements

@@Gruuvin1 Well yes. I think the first time was around 2000 when I first heard about it. Before that I used Yahoo and Altavista and a handful of others that were especific to my country.

7:38 I would be very interested if Mozilla were to make a paid privacy focused email service.
Firefox is awesome. Love the fact that one can install extensions on the mobile version.
You need to pay us a bigger percentage."
Effectively Mozilla is an ad revenue company just not directly, but as a middle man.
---
In the back of my head I get the sense that Mozilla was really just a stepping stone company setup to interrupt Microsoft long enough to allow say Google for instance to come and get in the game.
@@capofantasma97 1. tracking users is exactly what Firefox promises not to do
It is exactly what they do.

Yes, finally, some other tech vid that is not about mobiles. If you were to post another video today about mobiles, I was going back to my BlackBerry Bold 9000.
The channel is about education than product placement/gear
The add-ons on Mozilla is the game changer! No scripts, ghostery, adblock plus, geasemonkey. etc... all these saved me from the danger of the internet. Can’t fucking live without them anymore.
They could easily start an ad network of their own. There's heaps of open source groups that would run non-tracking ads just out of support.

I switched to ddg like year or two ago. And it's about as good as google in terms of search results, but you get dark theme and piece of mind of not being tracked. In other words - it's better

Honestly, this video here was pretty poor. He missed a ton of stuff, such as mentioning Pocket, the only successful investment of Firefox, he hinted at donating to mozilla yet when you donate it doesn't directly go to the development of the browser. And he forgot the CEO of mozilla is paid 2.4 million dollars.
Time to switch guys.
@@mikedw6748
Well unlike what a lot of people think, a CEO is an employee that answers to the management and he is not necessarily the visionary leader. And he doesn't have to believe in the company's philosophy as long as he does his job well and adheres the management's plans and recommendations.
I've been using FireFox exclusively since day 1, but I ditched it once Mozilla decided to kill my add-ons & push down my throat WebExtensions.
So now I'm using WaterFox Classic. 💗
