I use Ecosia and with the money from my searches they could already plant 82 trees. Not bad. But I'm still coming back to Google for important things from time to time because the results honestly are noticeable better.

I think TechAltar is the one that taught me how becoming the core that competitors rely on is even more vital in the long run than being the dominant service for users. Google and Bing obviously aren't threatened by any one of these little guys, but integrating themselves with all the other search providers makes it pointless to existentially challenge them at all. In a way, these other engines create new "brands" for the big engines. If a privacy-focused search engine relies at least partially on Bing results, and pays to use them, they become a privacy-focused alternative brand of Bing!

DDG imo, has more utility than Google. Especially for software development. It also has interesting features like bangs which allow you to directly search a specific website. For example, you can go on DDG and type "!yt techaltar" and it will send that query to youtube, and then redirect you to the youtube search results page. Depending on the website, it can take you to an exact page based on your search query. It also highlights different types of search results most likely relevant. So if you search some word or phrase, on the top, you can select whether your looking for a Meaning or Definition. One of the biggest things about DDG is you also don't need to leave DDG most of the time. Not only do search results come as links to websites, but DDG will also parse the most relevant result and display it on the search results page. IMO it is a more pleasant experience than Google.
I do still use Google, I just like the presentation of DDG better. I use Google when DDG fails me, but I have also found that Google fails me at an alarming rate. More than it should tbh. I have had actual Google searches return 0 results. Idk how that happens.

It's funny, I always try Google first, and if the results are not relevent enough I resort to DuckDuckGo. 90% of the time DuckDuckGo has more relevent results to a very specific thing I am searching for (I am a software developer usually looking for something really annoyingly specific) If only it had those quick Information cards I might actually use it as my default.

Am I the only one that finds the new labeling more conscise? Its less irritating while still letting me skip the first few entries almost immediately. Using flashy colors only made me more likely to look at the advertising link. Not going to lie I genuinely believed this was an apeasement move and not a predatory one

    • @MathiasBacher

I don't agree because I am so used to seeing the ads on top of the search result that I don't even look at them anymore. I immediately scroll down to the actual results as if the ads weren't even existent. But now with the color missing I have to take a look at them to even know where the actual results start.

I never knew that there were that many trackers and other bs around, till I started using Firefox and it blocked them all for me. I also don't really worry anymore about the cookie popups, Firefox blocks them anyway if you set it up to do so, even if I accept them. It comes with the added benefit of not giving the Internet to Google by letting everyone use Chromium based browsers.

A very important revenue and traffic model that you failed to mention is ad arbitrage, that is, search engines paying for traffic from Google Adwords, and then monetizing the same with sponsored listing and affiliate results on their end.
Ask.com was entirely reliant on this model in the past, and even today, there are a number of search engines that do this at a smaller scale.

I started to use ecosia when I realized that when searching on google a lot of sites didn't appear on the search results. Besides if you try to look for example, the untucked chapters of RPDR I never found them on google, but when changed to ecosia it was all there. Same thing when looking for manga that's not licensed in the US much less in my country, when I searched in google I couldn't find a site to read manga online, when I searched in ecosia there were multiple.
For me the monopoly google has is starting to crumble, we'll see in the future how things play.

3:20 So that's why most of the ads I see on DuckDuckGo are intended for the US while I live in (somewhere completely different from the US)! The ads being shown for the wrong country because I don't get tracked is one of the things I like about DDG, though I do occasionally use Startpage. If a web browser doesn't allow me to select either of the two, I select Bing instead.
10:53 I imagine it's so that Google can keep Android partially closed-source. Ugh!
