This is the kind of video Firefox themselves should be putting out. Very well done Michael, learned quite a bit. Will look forward to more on container tabs, and would love to see more on how you set up the bookmark search shortcuts. A really well done video, top notch.
@@SimonWoodburyForget Tabs are not something I rely on other than loading pages, I dont think it makes sense to save anything like what you are talking about because if I close the browser I am no longer running the same session. Vim stuff is available with addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tridactyl-vim/ The extensions were broken once because they changed the API used to make the extensions. They don't "keep breaking them" it happened once and that is all and it was planned and warned for 2 years yet some devs didnt bother to port. Why are you saying signing an extension is bad? Reason #1 & #2 of this video are why I use Firefox.
Pocket is a choice that you can use or not. Firefox doesn't claim that all tracking is evil, they are of the opinion that some tracking can be beneficial to the user as long as the user has the choice to participate or not. This applies to Pocket as well
@timeofsage Google tracks you everywhere. From the Google search engine, Google own sites (which direct you to a Google page, then redirects you to the page you want to go) and it even applies to pages not own by Google! I highly doubt of Google Do Not Track option, it is a functionless feature, only to make it look like there is a Do Not Track feature.
@@AlfaPro1337 Every single browser has that 'do not track' feature, and that's not a privacy protector, instead it just asks sites to not track you, that's not Google's fault if the website rejects your requests and still track you, Mozilla has a do not track feature as well, and it's the same as Google's, it depends on how ethical is the website you're visiting
Wow, the bookmark and container extensions are really a game changer! I definitely have to use Firefox more... Looking forward to the follow-up video's. Another very good en well explained video!
Thank you very much and I am looking forward to making those videos . . . a lot of people seem to want those. :D by the way, the bookmark system is built into Firefox, you dont need an extension for the stuff I showed off on those. :D
My top reason for favouring FF is its configurability. I can make it look like Netscape, I can harden it for privacy and security, and I can make it as fast as anything. All through a combination of tweaking the config, installing addons, and changing css files.
i was a chrome user for 5+ years and when i installed firefox i thought its worse then chrome but ive been using firefox for a couple of weeks and i find that its better then chrome
Glad to hear it, I think once all the value of Firefox is seen it's easily the best option but it takes way too much effort to see the value because they don't make the cool features default for some reason
I did a "trail" to switch to safari/chrome a few months ago. I end up switching back to FF because of all the add-ons I am using. There are things Safari / Chrome do better, but FF win over all for me. I used Safari for few years and loved its pinned tab, which is handled separately from other tabs, and won't disappear if you close the wrong window last. FF team refused to change the pinned tab behavior and I have to live with it for now. (Though I am changing to a new work flow and get rid of all my pin tabs). Chrome has most the plugin I use in FF, but can't stand the lack of build-in proxy support. On a Mac, the Chrome proxy setting button actually open the OS network settings. Though proxy add-on is working.
The main reason I believe firefox doesn’t eat RAM so much is because of the extreme effeciency of the Rust programming language implemented in the browser. It automatically puts memory on the stack that is in a scope, and you can easily assign a variable to a new variable, without creating 2 new copies, so that after the redefined variable is run, x = 6 to y = x, the 6 is merely moved between this variable, and when it leaves the scope {} it uses a drop function built in rust.
I switched to Firefox for the same reason I switched from daily driving Windows. Privacy. I run Firefox with privacy badger. I love the article you had up about fakebook and the other social medias being garbage. I feel the same way. I'm trying to get away from google, Microsoft and Facebook as much as possible.
So far I only used these keywords on search engines but seeing how this words on basically any site with a search page, it makes browsing websites so much better! That said, yes, I'd welcome you to do a separate video on Firefox keywords! Firefox ftw!
I switched from edge to Firefox because I really don't like that Microsoft is tendering to its chrome audiences and switched to Chromuim I was furious when this happened I've never regretted my decision of switching to Firefox.
Agree with @@TOMinPDX. If you're extra paranoid, there is also Brave (based on Chromium), but I personally just use Chromium (but thanks to this video, I'm trying Firefox again). _If you don't like the taste of aspartame, you should stop drinking soda and switch to fruit juice._ Wut?
@@dmhendricks Using Firefox is also keeping the alternative to Blink alive. Brave, Opera, Vivaldi are all great but we cannot let Google control the web protocols with the monopoly of Blink.
@TOMinPDX Google creates Chromium. Using Chromium or anything based on Chromium benefits Google by pushing the Blink engine. I think people should use whatever they want to but Firefox is the open solution and beneficial to the overall health of the web. Only one web engine would be way too much power, especially for a company like Google to have.
@@michael_tunnell Yes you are correct. I started using Chromium because I found Firefox had become too slow, sadly. It was a real memory hog on my Linux box. I don't like using Chrome because of the strong Google aspect but I really ought to start using Firefox more again.

@@UtwoBed "all the new operating systems are spyware" this only applies to Windows. I use Linux and I never have to worry about whether or not my OS is spyware because its guaranteed not to be . . . I dont even have to worry about spyware and malware from 3rd parties because Linux is designed so much better for security to not be a virus playground like Windows is. :D by the way, if you insist on needing Windows you could still do that in Linux as a VM and still have whatever you need without having to worry about viruses . . . even with Windows XP. I can show you how to do that. :D
@@michael_tunnell Right you are, in fact my newest computer is a Linux system. The only reason I still use Windows XP is because of my large investment in proprietary software that will only run on that OS. Interesting fact... MS has a special arrangement with the IRS to keep their XP system running because nobody can figure out how to update the system.
@@michael_tunnell I really do not worry about viruses. Malware-bytes and script blocker keep me out of trouble. The biggest issue is compatible hardware drivers, and I don't think doing a VM in Linux will work.
This video was incredibly informative. I switched to Chrome long ago because it's a lot faster and has better dev tools/extensions, but your #1 and #2 tips _alone_ has made me want to try Firefox again. I just need to figure out how to accommodate my development needs, but I think it's worth the effort. Nice work! EDIT: I had actually been considering Patreon for awhile now because of This Week In Linux, but this video finally made me overcome my laziness and do it.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you found it useful and I agree #1 & #2 are such great features they alone are what keeps me on Firefox. Thank you so much for supporting the channel! That means a ton to me!
@@michael_tunnell Oh no! I've been trying Firefox again, and while the speed is acceptable and the killer features are... killer, I think that I may have found a deal breaker: *Tab switching!* It is extremely unpleasant in #Firefox: 1. Sometimes it has delayed responsiveness, even on my 32GB i9. Very minor, but noticeable if you switch tabs frequently. 2. The thumbnail gallery thing is incredibly, visually jarring and in-your-face. 3. *Worst:* Control+Shift+Tab doesn't work unless you _first_ hit Control+Tab to bring up the annoying thumbnail gallery, and only _then_ you are allowed to tab back! This is not consistent with _any_ other program on macOS (and I'm assuming on Windows as well - Linux I have no idea because I only use command-line Ubuntu or CentOS [because #GUI == wasted resources], but nothing is ever consistent in Linux GUIs [GNUIs?] anyway). It is *quite* frustrating when you switch tabs very frequently. :(
@@dmhendricks ok so there are a few things to unpack in your comment. (also sorry for the delay in response, TH-cam decided this comment needed review for some reason and didn't bother to tell me that) #1. Firefox default tab switching system has become a weird experience. I agree. I think that Ctrl+Shift+Tab activating that weird dropdown menu is just super awkward. I also agree the thumbnail gallery for switching is rather inefficient and annoying. HOWEVER, thankfully . . . you can turn this crap off. -- Go to Preferences -> General -> Tabs and you will see an option labeled "Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order". Uncheck this option to go back to the normal Ctrl+Tab forward and Ctrl+Shift+Tab backwards. #2. Delayed response should be gone after unchecking that weird setting as well. #3. a GUI on Linux is not wasted resources. If you are using Linux on a server then sure that would be wasted resources but Linux on the Desktop is awesome and certainly having a GUI there is fairly needed, I'd say. :D #4. Nothing is consistent with Linux GUIs? That's not fair to claim because there is a lot of consistency however through innovation there will be differences and thus not everything is possible to be the same. Windows and Mac don't innovate . . . anything well not for decades anyway. It is possible that Apple innovated the dock paradigm but Linux had that very early on as well . . . so hard to know but Apple probably did that one. However, Workspaces aka Virtual Desktops are now in both macOS and Windows but those were innovated in Linux so this lack of complete consistency is what allows innovation and what allows macOS and Windows to steal their ideas. #5. with that said, there are a lot of differences and that can totally be jarring to people so I don't deny there is an issue there. That is one of the reasons I made my channel to help people transition to being Linux users and find out why Linux is such an awesome option for the desktop computing. :D
I've been off and on Firefox since way back, but definitely back on for the past year or two. In addition to the features that you mentioned, I like Tree Style Tabs. Vivaldi has grouped tabs, but not tree-style. Chrome has/had a tree style tab, but it was in the form of a separate pop-up while the the top tabs remained in place. With Firefox Color (thanks for the suggestion!), my total-dark theme is almost perfect. I still have to wrap my head around containers, though... Great video, sir.

One keyword search i use ALL the time is for TH-cam. I have used it for many years. Whenever i want to search something on TH-cam i just open a new tab and type "yt " and the search terms. The way i achieved it was to right-click the TH-cam search field and click "Add a keyword for this search" and set the keyword to "yt". This is much faster than typing "TH-cam.com", waiting for the site to load then searching what i need. Great video overall, and i think you should make a video on the more advanced keyword usage!
another reason is that google blocks you from other websites saying its not secure but when i use firefox it allows me through that website and its says secure
I would love to use Firefox. However, Vivaldi is the only web browser that implements tab stacking in any useful way and until other browsers get on board i'm stuck where I am.
Did you know that Google who owns Chrome also own TH-cam? They purposefully disable the animated thumbnails on Firefox to make it seem worse than chrome, however there's many sites that DO use the animated thumbnails in Firefox. They also make TH-cam a tiny bit slower for FF users. Not sure if that's still a thing tho.
Google most certainly makes things not work right. They even do it for Google Docs as well not allowing copy and pasting with the mouse. Google is malicious to competition in some ways for sure
@@michael_tunnell Yeah, same thing with Google Earth. You cannot use it in Firefox. It just shows how far they will go to shy away people from using FF.
Windows 10 user here. Loved the new FF but man does it eat up memory contrary to what your saying. I switched to IE Chromium Beta that seems to be the best of using less Windows resources. Ill update the latest version FF and see if its different now.
I am curious how you were testing the memory eating issue. I don't use Windows so that could be why I don't experience a similar problem but I am still curious what your experience was like.
TuxDigital yeah, Windows 10 desktop. I would just use it over several days accumulating tabs and with Excel and Outlook running I would have to close FF to reclaim memory. Probably would drop from 80% usage to 60, sometimes 50. That was many months back as i started to use IE Beta Chromium with better memory usage. Ill spark FF back up and see how it goes and let you know.
I'm still using chrome just because it has built-in webpage translation. Do you know any extension that can provide "accurate" translation like chrome does? Another issue is that there is no Mailtracker extensions for Firefox :/
Translation can be done with Google just like Chrome = addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=Google%20Translate Not sure about mail tracking but that isn't the only extension to do that. I've never used these before but check out the options at = addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=mail%20track
My favorite features from Firefox are: 1. Use about:profiles to manage more than one profile. You can launch more than one profile at the same time, and the new profile will exist in a new window, with settings associated with the new profile rather than the default profile. You can set different proxy that Firefox will use only for this new profile, and the settings are completely separate from your default profile ;) 2. If you have hundreds of tabs open at the same time, making it hard to notice the page title of each tab, but you have a rough knowledge of the title. Search the tab instead. Use shortcut "Alt + D" and prefix your search terms using percent sign '%'. For example: '% 7 reason why' 3. You can copy a list of plain text URLs, and paste it directly into Firefox bookmarks. And they will be stored as new bookmarks. Try copying these sample URLs *FROM A TEXT EDITOR INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY FROM THIS COMMENT* th-cam.com/channels/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html th-cam.com/video/bGTBH9yr8uw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/channels/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html/videos th-cam.com/channels/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html/playlists So you might want to copy then paste these to Notepad or any text editor first to correct the disrupted 'Enter' character that is supposed to separate each URL. From that, you can copy then paste directly to the Firefox bookmarks. Open bookmarks with Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks Or just do Ctrl + Shift + B, or Ctrl + Shift + O Create a new folder to contain the copied URLs, then paste them After that, you might want to click right on this new folder containing the recently copy/pasted URLs, then click "Open All in Tabs" This trick is helpful if you want to read manga that doesn't have a "Show all in one page" option
Thank you so much for the detailed comment! I was aware of #1 but never tried it, I need to do that. I've used everything else except the copy and pasting URL list. I was not aware that was a thing, thank you! :)
@@michael_tunnell Oh minor correction perhaps. You need to copy the said list of plain text URLs from a text editor to make sure the 'Enter' character that will supposedly be the delimiter work. Copying the list of plain text URLs from the TH-cam comment I made disrupted the 'Enter' character in between
Whoa, keywords sound really powerful! That's something I don't think Chrome does, unless a custom "search engine" is created for every single website...which is stupid compared to how Firefox does it. I have to agree, they need to make the keyword field visible when adding a new bookmark. Also, used Firefox Color to create my own theme. In a recent month, I downloaded Firefox just so I could give my website an automatic light theme (default is dark), but found myself using it more than Chrome! Now I basically never use Chrome, unless it's Google's Keep app or Chrome Remote Desktop (since at least that won't suspect me of non-existent "commercial usage" unlike TeamViewer...). After hearing about how ad-blocking is going to be basically destroyed in Chrome, I think I've made the right decision going with Firefox. (Also, used Firefox on Android because add-ons are a must, so I can send tabs between devices too!)
Sorry, you cannot easily disable telemetry. Only when one installs configuration file prepared by Librefox, Firefox really "shuts up" until it is asked to load a page. But I agree that FF is the best browser right now. I like Vivaldi also, but they don't give an option to fully disable connections to google and perhaps other entities.EDIT: 60 tabs - LOL; I currently am juggling 437 tabs in 3 windows... :)
Interesting, I'll need to look into that telemetry issue you mentioned. I was actually laughing at the 60, that's my minimum usually lol I typically have about 150 but limited it for the recording lol
I assume it is connecting somewhere because it asks DNS to resolve names like shavar.mozilla.com or whatever. It's probably something benign, but I have my ideal - no connections when I'm not asking browser to connect. And right now only Firefox with Librefox configuration does this (which involves lots of about:config options). And I'm not pleased that Mozilla starts doing some questionable things; in comparison with Google it is minuscule, but still I don't like it. Like disabling unsigned extensions or requiring to install some extension to update certificates for extensions signature-checking.
@@horserehab8454 "extensions 98% broken" - Most addons are transitioned to the new Quantum engine or I found alternatives. I am very happy with it right now. "Who are you then?" - just a regular Firefox Luser (L=Linux user=user)
@@horserehab8454 Overall it feels a bit snappier and lighter. The old one was a bit clunky. And besides that, the old version was on its limit, while the Quantum is still in heavy development and the change to the new addon system was a good decision in the end. In example it allows for the addon developer to release same version on all platforms (with slight modifications), in example in Chrome. Most or some addons are even available in mobile Firefox browser. And performance and memory usage and so on is a huge improvement, depending on the system.
I just switched to Firefox and am getting through setting everything up. I must be going insane because I cannot find in any documentation anywhere what the keyboard shortcut is for the tab right click context menu like you show in your MAC portion of the video. There is no way to get to it quickly now other than right clicking with a mouse? Did Firefox remove the shortcut?
I use Chrome and Edge all the time. How would I even begin to migrate away from these to Firefox? Do I eventually delete/disable them so I as to free up those resources? It seems like Chrome is pretty integrated considering gmail and such.
Thanks for commenting and those are great questions. I'll do my best to answer them. Migrating isn't that big of a task as it might seem, for example bookmarks can be automatically imported from both of those other browsers. When it comes to passwords, you should not store passwords in a browser regardless because they tend to have poor security for that. You should migrate your passwords to Bitwarden password manager bitwarden.com/dln (#sponsor) This way it doesn't matter what browser you use the passwords are always accessible and the security is much better. Otherwise, I'm not sure what else you may need for migration tips, feel free to ask questions. Chrome is integrated with Google services which is to be expected due to Google making Chrome too but nothing is really a deal breaker to using Firefox. I also have Chrome installed because of garbage stupid websites that require it for their service but I absolutely hate those websites. There used to be a time where jerks would be like "best viewed in Internet Explorer" and now we're driving right into that stupid wall again just with Chrome this time. A single browser engine is never good because it destroys innovation and competition. Firefox is really the only true competition since everything else just seems to use Chrome's engine anyway. So you may still need Chrome but 99.99% you won't. I very very rarely open Chrome. At most once a week but usually once every few months. Firefox has so many more awesome features that Chrome is of no interest to me. Personally, I'd LOVE to see a how to video on the keyword shortcut stuff ... I am doing bash scripting now and that exact example you showed (search for packages in different browser bases) would really come in handy .... hell I am thinking of different sites I visit unrelated to that, where this type of thing can really come in handy

I think there is no way to convince you to consider alternatives. You want it exactly the way you want it and that's fine. I adjusted my workflow to the new Firefox and I think it is better than what it was. You don't and that's fine but that does not mean I am wrong just like it doesn't mean that you are wrong either.
Before the most recent update (67.0.3), Firefox not only blocked the sound but also prevented the video from playing unless you clicked on the play button (e.g. TH-cam videos did not play until you hit play). How to get this feature back?
Had used firefox/mozilla browser for about 10 years. Then used chrome for about another 10 years. I switched back to firefox a few weeks ago. BUT IT DISPPOINTED ME QUITE A BIT. The iphone version and Macbook version of firefox don't sync with each other. When I register my icloud email on one of them, the other one doesn't see the registered email and asks me to register the email address again. So the same email address are used for 2 different sync accounts and they don't sync with each other. This is apparently a HUGE BUG. I reported at Firefox Service web site a few weeks ago and no answer yet as of today.
Your discussion of features seems focused on and advantageous to those who use the keyboard frequently. I do not. I use the mouse mostly. Therefore mouse gestures concern me most. Firefox has much better mouse gestures than Chrome. Chrome gestures on the Mac (my main platform) are too often flaky. The Chrome gesture add-ons developers say it's not their fault; that it's the nature of how Chrome is built; which interferes with how the Mac uses the right context menu button on mice. They do their best to fix the issue but like I said…it's still flaky.
my only problem with Firefox is they remove the tab group feature ... i normal get around 150 to 300 tabs open at a given time ... (while i work i keep the tabs that get stuff i use and close them after) can we switch between container groups ?? that would fix my problem...
I agree. Tab Groups used to be my #1 and I was so mad when they removed them BUT Container Tabs are much better imo. You can switch between containers though it's better to just reopen a site in a new container tab. I demonstrate it in the video. All you do is right click a tab, press E and then the first letter of the container you want. However I might be misunderstanding your question so please clarify what function you are looking for with the switching?
@@michael_tunnell well with the tab groups i could switch all the active tabs out from ex. work group and then back to personal .. so show 1 group and hide another.

I agree that this feature is awesome BUT to clarify something, Bookmarks Sidebar was not taken from Safari at all. Mozilla Firefox is a derivative of the old Netscape browser. Netscape and therefore Firefox had Sidebars way before Safari ever existed.

It could have tremendous features but it drags my computer to a near standstill so badly that videos fail with it. That put a stop to me using it much. Chrome and Opera do not have that problem with the same setups.
This is an excellent video. I recently went back to Firefox after dropping it for a couple of years, and am enjoying it overall. However, as someone who likes to keep the bookmarks sidebar open, WHY on earth did Mozilla ruin the dark theme by making the "Search bookmarks" space at the top of the sidebar, bright white? It's so distracting.
Thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed it. :D As for the sidebar, I don't see the issue you do. My sidebar is nice and dark theme on the search box as well as the rest of it. Maybe its something to do with your system theme?
At the top of your bookmarks sidebar on the left it says, "Search bookmarks" with the very tiny image of a magnifying glass. The background of this section is white like mine, because I can see your bookmark sidebar in your video. This strip of white should have been black like the rest of the sidebar.
One comment and question altogether: Thing I dislike the most witth FF is not being able to group tabs (eg. Safari). I've searched for plugins but havan't found anything close. Do you have an idea? thanks
Simple Tab Groups is a good extension for this in FF and it works with the container tabs extension for even more awesome. Firefox is currently working on making this a built in feature as well based on a couple reports recently
You know a couple of years ago at my last IT job I used Firefox exclusively. I'm running it on Windows 10 home version and it constantly screws up. It can take as long as 10 minutes to load a page. It seems to have suffered a quality issue. I have to clear my cash almost every time I log into it to get it to function correctly any suggestions

My phone is already hacked, & cannot put a new OS onto my laptop, since win7 went down & I have several LINUX DISC's, none of them will install onto laptop. Thanks F.F. for requiring a pass-word to use your Browser.
What? I'm confused by this comment. Firefox doesn't require a password to use a browser. That doesn't make sense. Maybe their sync service but that is not needed for using the browser. You don't need Windows to work in order to put Linux on it, all you need to do is boot from the Linux Disc/USB drive and overwrite Windows so not sure about that either.
It's my favorite because for years I used Chrome. Then I realized it was disrupting any videos I tried to watch on my Windows 10 computer. After switching to Firefox no problems anymore
I use Ffox for different reasons, but a warning about Sync: every time I use it I lose bookmarks. I drag my laptop out once or twice a year, and Sync cannot handle two computers that have very different bookmarks (even though they were once identical).
I dont use Sync at all. I see no need because I only need to sync once in a while just like you so I dont bother with that, I just export the bookmarks with html onto a thumbdrive and then move them over. Takes very little time and is always guaranteed accurate. Though I would assume that Sync would have an option to set one computer as a master source to always pull from but that's just something I would expect them to have. not sure if they do
I've been using chrome for such a long time, but was wondering why computer was so slow. Then I checked out task manager and found out why, apparently chrome uses 40% more memory and a shit ton more cpu, seriously chrome cpu usage varied from 12%-100% while firefox uses 1-8%. Not to mention I can import all my chrome bookmarks, so i'm extremely happy now. What's your opinion on Brave though?
I'm glad you found Firefox to be the best :) I agree. As for Brave, it's got some cool ideas but it is based on Chromium, just like Chrome is so it's also going to be bloated.
Container tabs It would be like having 'incognito' windows but classified, wouldn't it? I am wondering if I can use the contents as Workspaces, since I have Workspaces in Edge that open specific sites 🤔
Hey there thanks for commenting, It doesn’t work like incognito at all, it saves history but also Container Tabs does not require multiple windows which I believe is better. Yes you can make sites only open in specific containers if you want
is there any reason why Firefox goes black screen in milliseconds before I go full screen when I want to watch youtube videos on low performance laptop?
That is "normal", it happen on my Mac too. It is not hardware related. I actually have more issue FF go "white screen" when loading site, happen on all platforms and can't be changed with any themes/add-on.
@@LizziesLukas On a Mac, Chrome use a transition effect to switch in and out of video full screen instead of the blank/black page. Opera is using the same browser engine as Chrome call Blink. And Blink is a fork(variant) of webkit, whcih Safari uses. So you see similar transition in safari too. I am ok with black screen transition. Same for Edge as its engine is base on Blink starting this year(2019).
I have a question for you I would like to use Firefox but what happens when you download it ie do I delete google chrome on my Android phone if I do does it screw up my phone also I have a Mac and an iPad can I use fire fox with my Apple devices and does it screw them up. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I need to know this before I do it thanks.
with Android you cant remove chrome without going through many unnecessary hurdles. I just install Firefox and ignore chrome. with that said, install Firefox Preview as that is the better version these days. same thing is true for Apple devices, you cant remove Safari

One of the best Firefox videos I’ve seen. One of the best browser videos I’ve seen. Much appreciated! 👍

This is the kind of video Firefox themselves should be putting out. Very well done Michael, learned quite a bit. Will look forward to more on container tabs, and would love to see more on how you set up the bookmark search shortcuts. A really well done video, top notch.
Thank you very much for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Maybe I should tweet at Firefox :)
I didn't realize all the improvements Firefox has had lately. Thanks!
There is a preference option built in to keep all tabs on restart. Activate it.
What extensions did you lose that aren't available in Quantum?
@@SimonWoodburyForget
Tabs are not something I rely on other than loading pages, I dont think it makes sense to save anything like what you are talking about because if I close the browser I am no longer running the same session.
Vim stuff is available with addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tridactyl-vim/
The extensions were broken once because they changed the API used to make the extensions. They don't "keep breaking them" it happened once and that is all and it was planned and warned for 2 years yet some devs didnt bother to port. Why are you saying signing an extension is bad?
Reason #1 & #2 of this video are why I use Firefox.
1. FireFox doesn't track you every single website you visit, downloaded, etc. No tracking.
2. FireFox doesn't eat your RAM
Neither does the language they used to rebuild it, rust. Mozilla has the #1 browser and the #1 Systems Programming language: Rust.
I don't think the do not track is an issue of ethics but agreed on the rest
Wow, the bookmark and container extensions are really a game changer! I definitely have to use Firefox more...
Looking forward to the follow-up video's.
Another very good en well explained video!
Thank you very much and I am looking forward to making those videos . . . a lot of people seem to want those. :D
by the way, the bookmark system is built into Firefox, you dont need an extension for the stuff I showed off on those. :D
Check out Firefox Relay!
My top reason for favouring FF is its configurability. I can make it look like Netscape, I can harden it for privacy and security, and I can make it as fast as anything. All through a combination of tweaking the config, installing addons, and changing css files.
that is a fantastic reason too! :D

Subbed and waiting impatiently for BitWarden video!! ** twiddles thumbs **
It's coming :)
I’ve been using FF since about 2005 and I honestly don’t get why people like chrome so much, especially since they broke adblocking.
Really helpful information about several add ons that make Firefox even better than it even is without them.
I am glad you found this video helpful. Thanks for watching!
Idk why but Firefoxs logo and name just gives me this chill warm vibe
So far I only used these keywords on search engines but seeing how this words on basically any site with a search page, it makes browsing websites so much better!
That said, yes, I'd welcome you to do a separate video on Firefox keywords!
Firefox ftw!
Yea this is a super powerful feature and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I think I will make a video on this in a Quick Tip form

I switched from edge to Firefox because I really don't like that Microsoft is tendering to its chrome audiences and switched to Chromuim I was furious when this happened I've never regretted my decision of switching to Firefox.
If you don’t want to use google spyware, then definitely Firefox is the browser to use. If only it was better on iOS.
You can use Chromium it is what Google uses to to build Chrome but it doesn't have all the tracking and extra stuff that Google add to it.
Me too, great cross platform product and the only browser that still works in Windows XP
Why would anyone use Windows XP in 2019??
@@souvik.mondal Because it does everything I need. Because Outlook Express is still the best most efficient Email Client. Because I have 10K worth of software that works better than any of the new crap and they never updated the software for newer OS. Plus, all the new operating systems are spyware.
by the way, if you insist on needing Windows you could still do that in Linux as a VM and still have whatever you need without having to worry about viruses . . . even with Windows XP.
The best reason is because Firefox is not going to remove extensions that block ads like

I've been trying Firefox again, and while the speed is acceptable and the killer features are... killer, I think that I may have found a deal breaker:
*Tab switching!* It is extremely unpleasant in #Firefox:
(also sorry for the delay in response, TH-cam decided this comment needed review for some reason and didn't bother to tell me that)
Firefox is faster now
I've been off and on Firefox since way back, but definitely back on for the past year or two.
Thank you for the feedback, hopefully my video on container tabs will help when I get that finished

I agree with that search, I use it one for TH-cam as well though I limited it even further to just "y" :)
another reason is that google blocks you from other websites saying its not secure but when i use firefox it allows me through that website and its says secure
Great video. Looking forward to the containers tabs video.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you are wanting the container tabs video. I'm looking forward to making it :)
I would love to use Firefox. However, Vivaldi is the only web browser that implements tab stacking in any useful way and until other browsers get on board i'm stuck where I am.
I agree with the stacking and the tiling, it's very cool. I use Vivaldi as my secondary specifically for that feature :)
no pinch to smooth zoom, no gifs for youtube thumbnails etc... It lacks so many features that people use every day.
Translation can be done with Google just like Chrome = addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=Google%20Translate
Not sure about mail tracking but that isn't the only extension to do that. I've never used these before but check out the options at = addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=mail%20track
@@michael_tunnell Thank you :)
You're welcome! :D
I have used FIREFOX since the beginning....love it!
Same :)
My favorite features from Firefox are:
1. Use about:profiles to manage more than one profile. You can launch more than one profile at the same time, and the new profile will exist in a new window, with settings associated with the new profile rather than the default profile. You can set different proxy that Firefox will use only for this new profile, and the settings are completely separate from your default profile ;)
2. If you have hundreds of tabs open at the same time, making it hard to notice the page title of each tab, but you have a rough knowledge of the title. Search the tab instead. Use shortcut "Alt + D" and prefix your search terms using percent sign '%'. For example: '% 7 reason why'
3. You can copy a list of plain text URLs, and paste it directly into Firefox bookmarks. And they will be stored as new bookmarks.
Try copying these sample URLs *FROM A TEXT EDITOR INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY FROM THIS COMMENT*
th-cam.com/channels/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html
th-cam.com/video/bGTBH9yr8uw/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/channels/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html/videos
th-cam.com/channels/myGZ0689ODyReHw3rsKLtQ.html/playlists
So you might want to copy then paste these to Notepad or any text editor first to correct the disrupted 'Enter' character that is supposed to separate each URL. From that, you can copy then paste directly to the Firefox bookmarks.
Open bookmarks with Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks
Or just do Ctrl + Shift + B, or Ctrl + Shift + O
Create a new folder to contain the copied URLs, then paste them
After that, you might want to click right on this new folder containing the recently copy/pasted URLs, then click "Open All in Tabs"
This trick is helpful if you want to read manga that doesn't have a "Show all in one page" option
Copying the list of plain text URLs from the TH-cam comment I made disrupted the 'Enter' character in between
Oh that's interesting issue, I'll keep that in mind, thanks 😎👍
Great video! I haven't been using Firefox for a long time, but you've just convinced me to give it another try. :)
Glad to hear it, thanks for commenting
I think you made the best decision as well :)
Yes it's a search engine per site in Chrome, far from ideal. :)
Like disabling unsigned extensions or requiring to install some extension to update certificates for extensions signature-checking.
i am sticking with Mozilla Firefox .. simply, it dose everything quick, a lot of add-ons, and i love it :)
Me too. Firefox is my main browser since before version 1.0.
@@horserehab8454 "extensions 98% broken" - Most addons are transitioned to the new Quantum engine or I found alternatives. I am very happy with it right now.
"Who are you then?" - just a regular Firefox Luser (L=Linux user=user)
98% broken is a massive exaggeration. You can't find replacements? When was the last time you checked?
@@michael_tunnell .. EXACTLY .. very much indeed
But they can't fix the constant crashing
I don't even remember the last time Firefox crashed on me
I just switched to Firefox and am getting through setting everything up. I must be going insane because I cannot find in any documentation anywhere what the keyboard shortcut is for the tab right click context menu like you show in your MAC portion of the video. There is no way to get to it quickly now other than right clicking with a mouse? Did Firefox remove the shortcut?
I’m liking the Smash Button so hard right now...
You should migrate your passwords to Bitwarden password manager bitwarden.com/dln (#sponsor)
This way it doesn't matter what browser you use the passwords are always accessible and the security is much better.

I just switched chrome to firefox months ago because chrome is eats too many ram firefox is the best web browser
The biggest complaint I have about bookmarks is the inability after a research in them to find from what folder it comes from.
Honestly that is one of my pet peeves with the Firefox system, it doesn't let you know where it's located in search. That's very annoying.
Quite right, Firefox is my favourite browser as well.
I didn't know about the mouse gesture differences, that's good to know. Thanks for the feedback!
my only problem with Firefox is they remove the tab group feature ... i normal get around 150 to 300 tabs open at a given time ...
@@michael_tunnell well with the tab groups i could switch all the active tabs out from ex. work group and then back to personal .. so show 1 group and hide another.
the bookmark thing u did was great , please make a video on that
One more thing my morzilla has recently seriously started to lag and use high cpu with just over 7 tabs open any fix for that ?
I will totally do that video. Your lag issues could be a variety of factors but usually due to extensions going rouge in some way.
My second favorite for all these reasons. For many of these reasons and more my favorite is Vivaldi.
Customization: Vivaldi- 100/10, Firefox- 10/10, Opera- 8/10, Chrome- 6/10
I have heard about the container tabs but this is the first I have seen it implemented. Thank you. I look forward to more of the same on this.
I'm glad I could show it for you. The next video for that is going to be much more extensive and I will show my custom setup that makes it so much much better! :)
How do you get the minimize, maximize, and close buttons in the upper right corner inline with the tabs like chromium. My navigation has always been above the tabs taking up more verticle space than I would like. I have been removing borders in Plasma as a workaround, but I would much rather have it native.
When I print to PDF does it recognise the page name and use it for the PDF file name?
And does it retain all the hyoerlinks of the page in the PDF?
I also LOVE the Bookmarks sidebar. Taken right from Apple's Safari, it is just AWESOME!
I agree that this feature is awesome BUT to clarify something, Bookmarks Sidebar was not taken from Safari at all. Mozilla Firefox is a derivative of the old Netscape browser. Netscape and therefore Firefox had Sidebars way before Safari ever existed.
The Bookmark system is AWESOME!
Absolutely! Love the bookmark system
I started using Firefox when explorer kinda stop updates with the older systems. I never used Google and chrome. Now this all the bad press I wont use it. I am very happy with firefox.
I know im late to this i used google for my whole life and recantly i swaped to firefox and i can't say im suprised that it is better than google fire fox is my go to from now on
EDIT:Its actualy sad that you don't have firefox already installed on ur pc when you first get ur pc cuz its a lot better than google in every way
Firefox is certainly the best and welcome to the team :)
As for the sidebar, I don't see the issue you do.
It's dark on my current sidebar, that's what I was referring to. I must have made a change somewhere that I don't remember I guess
Okay. I wish you could remember what you did to make it dark, because in your video here, it's bright white. See at 17:02 mark.
Very true, I don't know how I forgot that was a thing. I'll look into it. Which operating system do you use?
One comment and question altogether:
Thing I dislike the most witth FF is not being able to group tabs (eg.
What version of Firefox do you have and which extensions installed?
As requested, I liked the smash button. Very much appreciated your tips re: bookmarks & containers. Consider this my twist to your arm for a deeper dive.
Deeper dives are on the list for upcoming videos :)
IT IS ALSO MINE, WHAT BOTHERS ME IS - one has 2
sign in every time it is opened,
Thereby showing one's p.w. 2
whom ever has ability to see it. My phone is already hacked,
& cannot put a new OS onto my laptop, since win7 went down & I have several LINUX
DISC's, none of them will install onto laptop. Thanks F.F.
for requiring a pass-word to
use your Browser.
Felt like I was too reliant on Chrome; it's nice to try new tech now & then.
best video about firefox. i love your tempo and calmness. subbed, liked, shared to friends.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
Though I would assume that Sync would have an option to set one computer as a master source to always pull from but that's just something I would expect them to have. not sure if they do
did you ever make the bookmark and the container tab video?
Not yet sadly but I hope to have at least one of those done this week
@@michael_tunnell looking forward to that i'm already enjoying containertabs
how did you make your bookmarks side bar dark? mine is still white ? could you help?
You just go to the hamburger menu -> Customize -> at the bottom left you'll see Theme drop down -> select the dark theme
@@michael_tunnell cool, i've been seeing people saying to sue duckduckgo on firefox. Never used it before, what are it's advantages ?should I use it?
*_INTERNET EXPLORER LEFT THE GROUP_*
Using a walker.
Wish i started using firefox earlier! Proud user of firefox
Bookmark is the one primary reason I use Firefox. I use the sidebar like you do with hundreds of bookmarks.
It's such a nice feature right? Do you use the search keywords function I mentioned
@@michael_tunnell I replied with a long comment. I don't see it here. ;(
Great video, thanks
is there any reason why Firefox goes black screen in milliseconds before I go full screen when I want to watch youtube videos on low performance laptop?
That is "normal", it happen on my Mac too. It is not hardware related. I actually have more issue FF go "white screen" when loading site, happen on all platforms and can't be changed with any themes/add-on.
but it never happen when i used Google Chrome or Opera or Edge or even IE
@@LizziesLukas On a Mac, Chrome use a transition effect to switch in and out of video full screen instead of the blank/black page. Opera is using the same browser engine as Chrome call Blink. And Blink is a fork(variant) of webkit, whcih Safari uses. So you see similar transition in safari too. I am ok with black screen transition. Same for Edge as its engine is base on Blink starting this year(2019).
Would love to see some additional video tutorials on the bookmark functions and container tabs please.
Will do! Thanks for the feedback
I'm only using Firefox, too. I didn't think about why I use it but this video shows it 😅
I'm glad :)
@@michael_tunnell thank you
ETA on that follow-up video for containers? 😉
Either this week or next week. I'm not sure just yet but by next week for sure 😎
@@michael_tunnell YASSSSSSSSS
okay... im asking.. how to enable autoplay youtube on firefox?
please answer...
now im using opera
thanks
I'm confused, TH-cam plays automatically on Firefox by default
did he ever do the firefox keywords tutorial? I can't find it in this channels library
no, the Container Tabs video is the next video I will be making on my channel and the Bookmarks will be after that. I planned on making those videos last week but I got sick so very difficult to talk with a sore throat.
@@michael_tunnell cool, thank you!! feel better #hopeitsnotcoronaviruslol some vicks and 7up will cure that right up
Mozilla is OG! Always will be loved. 💯
agreed 😃
upgraded from chrome to firefox really so good
