    Can science please erase my bad memories. Every time I remember them I fall into deep depression and I can’t control it, I have mental breakdowns and really bad trust issues triggered by these memories. Sometimes I am able to forget about them and live normally for a short while, but then they start again. I am at a loss of what to do. Please. I need help.

      A drug can change the way a stress or fear memory feels, but this can also be achieved through any technique that utilizes memory reconsolidation. Two therapies in particular, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), initiate memory reconsolidation with eye movements and imagery recall. EMDR and ART both activate reconsolidation by having you use imagery to recall the stress or fear event. The recall of this stressful event activates a physical response you can feel in your body. The fear imagery is reviewed while your body’s physical responses is regulated with eye movements, tapping or even coaching with guided imagery.
      By repeatedly reviewing the fear imagery over the course of about 10 minutes the physical response is diminished and the fear is desensitized. At this point a new and desired response to that fear memory is elicited. You can imagine how you’d like your future self to feel about this memory, or imagine that you tell yourself something different about that experience
      This is called voluntary image replacement and it is used to elicit the new and desired emotion to replace the fear response. Positive imagery is used to rehearse the future desired response when the targeted stress cue is again encountered. The result is very similar to erasure, the fear memory is removed, leaving only the new, positive association.

  • @Psych2go
    @Psych2go 9 ปีที่แล้ว +162

    The semantic network model also explains how memories cues can trigger one memory activating associated memories. Hence, the more we can relate things together the more they're likely to be remembered. This also means that memories that have little amount of association to other memories are also more likely to be deleted or forgotten.

    While it might be interesting to delete certain memories so we don't have to remember trauma, or to have the possibility of reliving an amazing feeling, I don't think I would use it...
    Life is for experiencing, and memories make up who you are. We learn from memories and without them we would just end up in an infinite loop. So I'll keep them... both good ones and bad ones alike...

      As horrible as those things are, they should not be forgotten. Forgetting it doesn't erase the fact that it happened. I was thinking about physical abuse I went through in the past (including sexual) and whether or not I wanna forget going through that, and I ultimately say, no. I think it's important to move past trauma and be a strong person, but don't forget your struggles, suffering and hardships. It's a part that shapes who you are, no matter how ugly.
      That's why I don't think blacks in America should forget that slavery happened, or that Jews should forget the Holocaust. No one should forget those things, neither whites, blacks, Jews or Germans. A Holocaust survivor should not forget what they went through.

      Scott Dudok
      Nope. Still going to disagree. It's the wrong way to deal with such a thing. But that's my opinion. If someone does their own cost benefit analysis and decides that's what they want, then okay. But I'm saying, that before considering anything like that, to really look into it because a lot of things seem appealing or like a good idea on the surface.
      Also, I think the memory that you erase might even have the ability of returning somehow, and if it does, it's gonna be even worse because then the person will feel like they remember something they aren't sure that actually happened.

      Animal testing is an unforunate and necessary evil. A day may come when it's no longer needed, but I fear it won't be within our lifetimes, and I doubt it will ever come when dealing with neuroscience and psychology. The problem is living systems are just too complex for us to accurately model and/or predict the outcomes of procedures.

    Yes, I would take a pill that took away memories of particularly embarrassing or traumatic events. There is no usefulness or value to reliving events that don’t help you in day to day life. Remembering that moment you tripped in the hallway at school, forgot how to spell that word when you were called in the classroom, etc. these memories don’t help you in any way and just force you to relive the trauma over and over. Also, we know that positive reinforcement is much more valuable in learning than negative reinforcement, so removing painful memories would likely not change you in any way. You would likely still have table manners, and still retain everything you learned through life. Just remove those painful memories. They don’t do you any good.

I'm a big fan of talk therapy if you can find a good therapist. Gaining self-knowledge is the best way to overcome trauma, but it does take years of hardwork. I've done it on my own and I am amazed by the results.
      Even if it was possible to forget an event in the past, that's not going to fix all the problems which was caused by that trauma.
      If you need to talk more feel free to send me a PM.
      Thanks!

      Its easy to tell someone to deal with a problem you don't have or understand. Some people, like yourself, thinks therapy helps when it doesn't always. I doubt this person has PTSD, tried almost everything, but haven't tried therapy.

      Funny cause that's what my mom made me do my whole childhood when in reality I was young enough I would have forgotten on my own.
      It's the fault of all the therapy and talking about (that and my mom was a bitch and constantly made me feel bad about it like it was my fault) that makes the memories hurt so much. I couldn't actually take the pill now if even though I want to because I will still have the painful memories of my mother and bad therapists spread throughout my life, I would need like a systematic wiping of all the memories of my family(I would do that too actually). But for people with new trauma this pill will save so much time and hurt. Therapy and talking is not for everyone, especially a little kid who just wants to be normal. Trust me

      ***** Sorry, but I never meant to downplay people's problems. Of course it's easy to say deal with it when it takes years of hard work to over come these things, but somebody has to do the hardwork and that's the person who wishes to improve their life and well being. I've gone through a pretty rough childhood myself in a messed up country which was in the middle of THE worst war since WW2, so I guess I know a thing or two about trauma.

    • @airhop213
      @airhop213 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the way it goes is that I give you the drug and then tell you to think back to your friend's death. My words trigger your memory of, let's say, being told of your friend's death, much in the same way that the sound reminds the mice of the memory of pain. After telling you, though, your brain tries to use the proteins to recreate the memory so that you know what I'm talking about, but it can't, so the memory is gone. However, if given enough time for the drug's effects to go away, you should be able to remember everything else about the friend, so you would probably just logically conclude that the person is still alive - or at least, you don't know where he/she is or how he/she is doing.
      Obviously this is just a guess but that's what I'm assuming, based on the video.

      From what I've found in other sources, the drug propranolol seems to target emotional memories. In other words, you don't forget the events that happened nor do you forget how it once made you feel. Your brain just forgets how to summon those emotions after treatment.

A child will learn and remember small words and other things they will use more often as part of their normal development, but long term memories from before that point usually get over written.

      And I have no comfort zones!! I hate them xD It took me 10 years to learn english? yeah, let's try to learn dutch in a semester! have social exiety? I have OCD that fixates on certain events or things that people said that has driven me almost to suicide. The essential problem is the continuous looping of my brain, but the memories provide the fixation. I would certainly choose to erase certain memories if I could. For instance, even watching this video triggered anxiety about how reliable some old memories are. Ones that I like. I want to erase the former memory right now. Just an example. But the memories that drive me crazy are much worse.

    If someone died, and now you are upset about it, you forget they died with the pill, then you ask "Where'd they go?", and then you find out their dead, and you freak out again... Yeah... Not a good idea... Neither is if you forget someone died so you don't have experience with it anymore, then someone else dies, instead of feeling it for a second time, so you already know what's going to happen, you will feel the same the first time instead of knowing how to cope with the depression of someone going. This is just an example, a big example of what it could be like... Or at least that's what it seems like for me.

    How sad that they experiment with the rats with shocks when they could have done literally anything else. Give them a piece of food in a specific spot every time the sound is played and see if the rat runs to that spot; have it indicate that a door will open far away that'll let them into another area in the cage, and see if they head in that direction; etc etc etc.
    You don't have to hurt something to get a reaction from it. Sometimes I feel like scientists just choose to do stuff like this because they're lonely sociopathic animal abusers who get their jollies doing experiments that hurt things and call it "science".

      I have to point out that these "sociopathic animal abusers" tried to test the drug on bad memories which includes fear, anger, sadness, etc. I don't think that getting food would make for a memory that was required for that test.

    • @TheGoldenDunsparce
      @TheGoldenDunsparce 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FinnDuDe95 It didn't seem that they were trying to test specifically *bad* memories though; just memories that inflect emotion. Excitement is an emotion too. All they were looking for is if the rats tensed up when they heard the chime, preparing themselves to be shocked.
      Having a dog hear a bell and seeing if he drooled is pretty much the same thing, but not as cruel. Rats can be trained just as easily so they didn't need to resort to inflicting pain on them.
      There was a test where they experimented on various of rats with a bright light that shone straight down into their cage. Many were fearful of the light and would poop or run away. Some would freeze for a moment, then calm down. They bred the fearful rats and found that their children were just as, if not more, fearful than their parents. They tested drugs on the fearful rats to see if it would dull their instinct to flee despite their genetics. It worked.
      Why not do a test similar to that?
      Instead of shocking the rats, why not play a chime then turn the bright startling on for a few seconds. The trauma of being startled with the light would bring upon the same emotional trauma, but wouldn't physically harm them. Well, aside from the heart attacks and anxiety, I suppose...

    Does that mean that the elderly can't recall events properly because they'd had a very long time to reflect on the memories?

    • @WillGibb
      @WillGibb 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct!

    • @IloveJellow
      @IloveJellow 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      that's actually half the reason. The other half is the receptors are getting old and are not getting replaced ( alzheimer ) The issue is when we get older your body becomes slower at replacing cells and soon it will stop. Some actually do well and try their best, but at around age 80 its a issue that's unstoppable.
      This is my one worry about this drug that it could make this happen sooner rather than later if exposed too many times.

    • @monkgot45
      @monkgot45 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      IloveJell0w Alzheimer is not a universal thing that is going to happen to everyone. When we become older we do lose some neurons but the ones that remain are much stronger. Also through repetition (firing of the same/similar neurons) you can prevent yourself from forgetting. You only have one worry about the drug? Not the countless illegal uses it could have?.---.

    • @IloveJellow
      @IloveJellow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      monkgot45 There are already short term memory drugs in cycle and those can even cause long term memory loss how is this one going to be any different ? Oh because its medical prescribed well that changes everything.
      Also Alzheimer is more universal than you think however if you keep your brain fit you can fight it off till you hit the grave. .

    • @monkgot45
      @monkgot45 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      IloveJell0w Because it's prescribed is exactly the reason why xD. There may be drugs which already do what is mentioned but they're less available and probably not as effective (such as ether was when it was given to patients). Marijuana and Ritalin (and Ritalin drugs) are damn good examples of this. Alzheimer is prominent in AROUND 80 +-10 percent of seniors so it is prominent. BUT it is NOT the reason we forget memories at a young age. That is due to a lack of potential of the neuron firing (which can have the potential of being recalled through firing of connected neurons). Also a Popscience channel doing a video on such this subject shows that it is more public (more available) friendly than just for a scientific journal (which is typically not perfected and harder to find)

    When i was 5 years old my father took me from my mother with her conscent, to live with him and his new wife.
    It quickly bacame apparent to me that she took an instant dislike to me, more like hatered. She had four children of her own. Anyway the abuse started off almost immediately making me stand in the corner of the room facing the wall for absolutely no reason that a five year old child would understand anyway. The days went on with low level mental abuse, well to a five year old boy it was devastating. My father was a long distant driver so all this abuse took place when he was out, but he could see that I was unhappy there. So her four children started to bully me and attacked me in the house. They had a dog that use to nip me, and they would all just laugh. I started to hear her mother say to her, "Why don't you just dump him somewhere." So after a year of mental tourment at the hands of everyone in that house, she finally decided to take her mothers advice and dump me on the street I was only 6 years. So Social services placed me with a foster family but after a year the moved me to a children's home. That was a blow to me because I became part of a loving family. When I was 8 years old they moved me to another children's gome where I stayed for 8 years. I left the children's home when I was 16, then they moved me to another children's home for a year, then when I was 17 they moved me to an half way house to get me use to an independant life. I left the care system as I went in feeling alone, worried, & affraid. Of course i have not put every awful experience in this post. Thank You.
