In Contact Harvest, the jackals were raiding those unmanned human ships for fruits and things like that. In the first contact meeting between humans and covenant Sgt Johnson’s team prepares fruits and vegetables for jackals. They weren’t expecting brutes.

I'd say the talk between the brutes in that cutscene in Halo 2 can only be taken with a grain of salt. They more than likely were just trying to intimidate or frighten the Arbiter, considering the current Brute-Elite relations, and the hate for this particular Elite. They probably do eat meat, and would eat an Elite if they had to... but I doubt that Brute was actually hungry.

Elites live on a planet alot of water and in Halo Fractures (minor spoilers) the Half Jaw tells a story about how he used to fish in rock pools when the water receded, so i think it's safe to assume the Elites also eat some form of sea food.
Also in Contact Harvest (minor spoilers again) the Jackals steal fruit from humans, so they are at least capable of eating safely eating vegetation even if it isn't one of their primary food sources.

*San'Shyuum* = Omnivorous/Herbivorous (speculation as early San'Shyuum were described as hunters while the San'Shyuum in the Covenant appear to support an herbivorous diet supported by their physiology)
*Jiralhanae* = Carnivorous (stated in several sources of their love of meat)
*Lekgolo* = Everything (herbivorous decomposer, scavenger and mineral leeching) Note: The Lekgolo featured in Halo: Nightfall were not common Lekgolo but were modified and genetically altered *Thanolekgolo* colonies in the Forerunners attempt to find a way to stop the Flood. The Thanolekgolo appear to be carnivorous and energy parasites in addition to the other stated diets)
*Kig-Yar* = Carnivorous (speculation based on physiology and combat/hunting behaviors)
*Unggoy* = Piscivorous (stated that outside of the Covenant Unggoy were common fishers and Unggoy were described on a few instances that they'd eat fish found in human ponds and were seemingly fond of koi and other carp; despite this they were only fed via food nipple)

Luke my boy, you forgot about Halo Nightfall. Those Lekgolo seemed like they consumed that one character before replicating her appearance later.
Zack Higginson yeah that's what I was thinking. Either that our she may have had some implants they wanted and tore her apart to get it. Then again they would have been after her sooner if she did.
They were a rare breed of lekgolo. Not the covenant version, they were stored in installation 04 by the forruners after they failed to utilise them on the flood. Being locked up till Chief blew the ring up would cause them to eat anything possible.
But honestly, I think they were just mauling them to death. They obviously survived minerals while In storage.

When playing halo3 (odst) if you go behind cover sometimes brutes will say "ARE FOOD HAS TAKEN COVER"

In Halo Night fall the feral hunter worms where attracted to electricity, and I'd assume the people who got swarmed by them didn't get tickled to death. They must eat humans and other meats too. In a episode of hunt the truth season 2, jackals would have shared servings of all kinds of meats and organs that they feast on.
Or maybe the feral hunters would eat the electronics in the humans armor or just eat the entire armor and then kill the human by smashing them on a rock or something. Just a theory
I read the Halo novels (I own them) and one part of the book Evolutions is put in the veiw of the Brutes and they end up eating the Grunts they took with them along with some of the humans they captured. Nice video btw!

I remember a bit of lore from halo wars you can unlock that talks about a brute chieften getting angry at a grunt who didn't bring him his favorite sauce for with his diner

Interesting video, although I have one issue. I think you're reaching pretty far with the "the brutes went hungry" argument. I interpreted the Halo 2 anniversary cutscene as showing the dominating relationship between Tartarus and his brutes, as well as the antagonistic relationship between the Brutes and the Elites. Brutes are beasts, and probably did eat "whatever they got their hands on" but that doesn't make them lowly. They were next in line behind the Elites and after the Great Schism, they were the leaders. They were certainly well fed. The Covenant only weakened after its fragmentation, other than that it was a strong empire that lasted almost 3000 years (852 BCE - 2552).
Yeah those specific Brutes being a bit hungry after dragging Arbiter for God knows how long is by no means evidence the entire species was malnourished or were desperate for whatever scraps they could find. Dudes just likely had very big appetites

My guess with the two hungry brutes is brutes are hungry within an hour of eating. It makes sense, they are so strong that they would have to burn a lot of energy with their increased strength. They are also almost certainly warm blooded, meaning they have to heat themselves by burning food energy. Probably the reason for fur

The jackets are humans. In the New Blood book, Buck states that Draco III was not glassed but instaid was used as a hunting/feeding ground for the jackals. They round up the civilians and soldiers and eat them

Funny enough the one 2D animated Red Vs Blue short that got upscaled and released as part of season 15 I think actually shows grunts feeding at a good nipple described in contact harvest and I think it’s the only time we’ve ever seen such a thing and it’s rightfully kind of nasty

In one Halo book I remember jakals fighting with grunts over rotting melons.
I vaguely recall a halo book saying that Sangheili eat some sort of grain. I can't remember the book, but it's in the one where Jul M'dama was kept prisoner in an ONI facility in a forerunner Dyson sphere. It said in the book that ONI was working on poisoning the grain as well.

Actually read through Contact Harvest recently. Near the beginning of the book, a bunch of Kig Yar actually eat a shipment of Human fruits. So unless it made them sick afterwards I'm guessing that they don't just eat meat. Also I'm in the middle of the Kilo-Five trilogy right now. Near the end of Glasslands and the beginning of The Thursday War, some Sangheili foods are described, along with some insights on their diet. I'm still reading The Thursday War so I'm not sure if they go into any further detail with a certain Sangheili.
