I really enjoy watching your content and have learned a lot about motorbike maintenance from your videos. One small suggestion: turn the music down as it can be hard to hear what you're saying at points. Love from Ireland!
nice surprise to see this video this morning. Like how you work with what you have like 75% of us do, wish I had one of those fancy lifts but do all of my work on the ground.
Great series, great raw content which is a breath of fresh air in the youtube scene. Please be careful at background music and copyright strikes. I would not want to see you in that position. Looking forward to another video brother. Sending love from Romania!
I just brought one of those bikes back from the dead recently. Same year & model. Mine was in worse shape. I picked it up for $800 & it looked like it was dredged up from the bottom of the ocean. I went through it front to back. overall cost of parts & purchase price was between 3 & 4 grand. It's a nice old girl now. At first I thought it was the uglyest big twin I ever seen, but now I think she looks & runs alright. It's a fun bike to ride.
@@tta850 It's like the unwanted red headed step child that only a mother can love until you get to know it. Easy maintanence. Mine is stripped down like yours. I got rid of the enclosed chain housing. The only problem with that is parts aren't availible such as rear sprockets. The rear sprocket weighs about 10lbs. I'm gonna keep mine chain & I have a rear wheel I want to eventually put on it so I can put a generic sprocket on it. I suppose you could put a later model transmission in it to run a belt & get rid of the tapered clutch hub, but I 'think' you might have to run a wider swingarm & put a later model primary assembly that matches the transmission. Plus a clutch lever that matches the later style clutch cable. A nice 'O' ring chain should work good enough. It's a standard 530. If you ever pull the clutch hub, put a re-enforcement ring on it so you don't split it at the keyway when tightening it up. That's if it has the ABC clutch. The parts manual shows a dry clutch like the shovelhead. Mine is an ABC wet clutch.
@@toddk.5873 good info, question on the rear sprocket when I go on like Dennis Kirk it shows the rear sprocket (and front too) available and relatively inexpensive… is that not the right sprocket??? I’m leaning towards leaving the chain, will be digging into the enclosure soon. It’s listed as 530 pitch and 110 link, sound right? Also like you mine is a wet clutch (pulled the derby cover to check and see if it had oil for once lol) Thanks!
This is an enjoyable series, you sound like the type of guy that doesn't let the little shit bother him. I think the small victories are making us all feel good 👍
I’m also from New York but now I live in Texas. I’m rebuilding my friends bike who passed away four years ago. It’s an 83 shovel and tinkering around with it brings up a lot of memories. But one memory I would like to see is when you get the bike on the road take a video of you going down to your local pizza shop. Texans don’t know anything about pizza. Good luck and keep the videos coming
Great story, that’s how I feel about my Harley’s it’s to honor the history and previous owners spirit… I’d be happy to do a pizza run, I can never say no to pizza! 🍕 😂

Thank you! Yeah not everything is positive or gets you moving forward but persistence is key, I’m sure there are more pitfalls hidden in this bike but it’ll be worth it I think!
Hey there! How you doing? Just found your channel today, got your "First ride after 20 years" video on my recommended feed and checked it out. And after that video, and two more after it, I've gotta say that I am wholeheartedly hooked! Really cool series, dig your personality and the way you explain things, and I'm learning a ton with you taking us through your steps like you are. Thanks, and I'm hoping you keep going! Greetings from Norway!
Keep the grind bro. I'm currently working on breathing life back into a 90's 883 ATM. I better continue hearing that random music in the background. Anyone complaining can kick rocks.
Congrats! You now have two running scooters so I'll be up there in a few hours! Seriously, I'm glad you got both going. I am a retired mechanic (42 plus years) on all things that interest me. I love to see people fix things themselves. The '84 didn't have much wrong mechanically, wonder why it was parked. Maybe the module side lined it. Anyhow have fun!

This bike sounds so sweet at idle btw.
I love the EVO motor way better than Shovelhead and Panheads, I put a crane HI-4 ignition in mine in 1996 and haven't seen it since that is how great those motors run smooth. I have the 1986 FXST but when I get a chance I am going to get a FXR Low Rider or a FAT Boy EVO, By the way I am a mechanic and I have worked on tons of Panheads and Shovelheads and I would not trade one EVO for a hole truckload of either of them.
I agree from a Harley mechanic's point of view. They're not as pretty. I think of them as a refined knucklehead. 1936 to 1999. The first year Evo 1984 needed some updates, but my 84 runs pretty good without them. I'd like to update the cylinder studs if & when it becomes an issue.
